About this location
The Dumfries and Galloway region
Dumfries and Galloway is a quiet area of southern Scotland not really on the way to anywhere, although it can get busy in summer it's a peaceful retreat away from the crowds for most of the year. The scenery around Kippford is rolling countryside and low hills, some covered in forests. There are plenty of walks along the coastline which can often lead to hidden beaches.
Kippford has always been a sailing village with large boats mooring at the pier to take quarried granite rock around the world. Today the boats are much smaller and consist of moored sailing yachts and the occasional racing dingy. There is no through road in Kippford, the main road ends at the old Post Office on the front it then turns into a private road that snakes along the shoreline to a shell covered beach called Rough Firth. Kippford has two pubs: The Anchor and The Mariner which both server food, it's possible to sit on the sea wall outside the Anchor and watch the sun fade behind the Galloway hills with a drink (a highly recommended activity). Other activities in Kippford include: a 9 hole golf course which is located at the top of the hill on the way into the village and The Solway Yacht Club who host cruiser and dingy races. In nearby Dalbeattie is one of Scotland's best mountain biking locations for trail and off-road riding.
