The East Anglia region

East Anglia's mild climate means it is sunnier and dryer than any other area in Britain, and makes it an ideal location for holidaying. It is characterised by farmland plains, rolling hills, fens and waterways. The Fens, crisscrossed by waterways, are unique in the British isles and provide a wonderful habitat for wildlife.

Inhabited since ancient times, both fenland and rolling farmland are rich in history, abounding with castles, cathedrals and country houses, and its well-preserved old villages with innumerable thatched cottages are rightly famous. In more modern times, East Anglia was home to US Army Air Force and RAF air bases in the Second World War, and is still home to the Queen and the royal family at Sandringham.

The local area is rich in history. Close to Hilton is the picturesque market town of St Ives, home to Oliver Cromwell and nearby is the university town of Cambridge with its beautiful colleges and museums and opportunities for punting and shopping.

The magnificent cathedrals of Peterborough and Ely are within easy reach, and there are numerous historic properties in the area such as Anglesey Abbey, Wimpole Hall, Houghton mill and Audley End. Visit Duxford Air museum or the peace of the American military Cemetery at Madingley. Flag Fen reveals the remarkable 3,500 year old Fen Causeway, while Bletchley Park was home to the Enigma codebreakers of World War Two.

Visit the wild life sanctuaries of Welney and Paxton Pits, or the conservation zoos at Hammerton and Linton.

There are plenty of activities locally to engage all ages of visitors, from walking, horse racing or riding, cycling or sailing, to boat trips around the waterways or punting from Cambridge to Rupert Brookes' Orchard Tea Rooms at Grantchester.

"A lovely quiet, well equiped comfortable place to relax in and enjoy."

The White barn is a lovely comfortable apartment with every thing you require for a short or extended stay. I stayed for just over two weeks and found it an ideal base to tour the surrounding countrys… More

I'm really glad your stay went so well. The Barn is really well situated for touring the area, and there's now the Guided Bus for getting into Cambridge quickly and easily, as well as the very efficient Park and Ride. There are multi story car parks in Cambridge so you can drive in if you want to, but these are really good options for avoiding traffic and parking so that you can have as long as you want looking round the city.

"A good value stay to explore Cambridge"

The owner Claire was very accommodating and prompt with her communication. We were able to stay late on the Sunday, as there was no other booking for that day.Pros: Spacious, well-equipped kitchen and… More

Thanks for such helpful comments which we've acted on straightaway. We've had a good session in the garden to cut back the excess growth and have introduced some more flowers, we have tackled the cobwebs high up in the rafters and have put new planters at the front. We also have repainting of the exterior and interior scheduled for early September, so the Barn will be looking very fresh!

"Great warm holiday home"

We're really glad you enjoyed your stay. There is a post office-shop in the village and small pub, but your right that a car is essential for reaching the excellent restaurants and pubs in surrounding villages.
