The Essex region

North Essex and Suffolk are blessed with rolling countryside and many beautiful villages. Pond View is close to Castle Hedingham (3.6 miles) with its Norman Castle, Sudbury (the birth place of Gainsborough, 8.5 miles), Dedham (Heart of Constable Country, 27 miles), Finchingfield (the most photographed village in Essex, 8 miles), Clare (6 miles), Melford Hall (10 miles), Kentwell Hall (11 miles), Ickworth House (20 miles), and many more. The countryside is crossed by many footpaths and lanes, which are ideal for cyclists and walkers, particularly dog walkers as the majority of farms are arable with few livestock herds.

Looking further afield, Little Yeldham is between London (64 miles, 1 hr 30 mins by car and train) and Cambridge (30 miles, 55 mins approx. by car), so both can be visited in a day's excursion. Newmarket, famous for horse racing and the National Stud, is 22 miles, approximately 40 mins drive to the North, Colchester (Britain's first Roman City), which has a well stocked Zoo is 22 miles, approximately 45 mins drive to the South East and the beaches of Clacton (37 miles), Frinton (39 miles) and Walton on the Naze (40 miles) are just over an hour's drive in the same direction.


Pond View is situated in Little Yeldham, but close to the boundary with Great Yeldham, which is 10 mins walk away and has 3 pubs, 2 with restaurants, a local shop, a post office, doctors and veterinary surgeries, and 2 takeaways.

The main attractions nearby are - The Norman Castle at Castle Hedingham (3.6 miles), various events occur here throughout the year, please see their website, and the Colne Valley Railway (2 miles).

Overall the area is rolling countryside with mainly arable farmland and woodland.

"Constable Country and more"

Pond View is a well equipped and maintained apartment with access to a very pleasant garden, providing a spacious and very comfortable place in which to stay. The owners, who live in an adjacent house, are as pleasant and helpful as you could wish. The location is very convenient, enabling places such as Audley End House [Saffron Walden], numerous delightful Suffolk villages and small towns [e.g. Clare, Cavendish, Sudbury, Long Melford, Lavenham, Kersey], and the Constable Country [Dedham, East Bergholt, Flatford, etc.] to be reached easily and quickly. Of special interest is the network of churches, large and small, each with a wealth of history to reveal, while, for railway enthusiasts, the preserved Colne Valley Railway is nearby. On the food shopping front, good supermarkets are available in all directions, useful village stores are by no means rare, and there are some good farm shops tucked away, although some of these are seasonal. Constable Country apart, this is an area neglected by the tourist - perhaps to its advantage - but it has much to offer and this apartment is an ideal base for exploration.

"Excellent, beautiful garden, very friendly"

A lovely rural setting, friendly and helpful owners. Large dog friendly garden with nice decking area for relaxing, dining and BBQ's. Easy flat walking from the cottage, excellent for a long weekend or extended stay.

We found Chris & Eppie very friendly, welcoming and perfect hosts, who gave us lots of information about places to visit.
The apartment was roomy , comfortable, with everything you need for .a pleasant break, it was great to return to each night after exploring the charms of North Essex and Suffolk.

The setting was superb and on warm Summer evenings it was great sitting out on the decking with a glass of wine literally within touching distance of the crops, while the evening sun went down.. Another real plus was that 2 pubs, a grocery store, fish & chips plus Indian takeaway were all within walking distance.

Thanks again to you both not forgetting (Luca) dog who quickly treated us as part of the family.
