Description from owner
Dashel Cottage is a cosy converted stone barn at Dockwell Farm, a 400 year old Dartmoor longhouse. The accommodation is on three levels with French windows onto a terrace at the rear and a small enclosed garden (lawn).
The 50 acre farm has cattle, horses, hens, geese, guinea fowl, dogs and cats. The farm is in a stewardship scheme with Natural England; four fields are designated as a County Wildlife Site for the variety of hay meadow species including orchids. The cottage is on a very quiet lane; if you hear footsteps at night it will be ponies trotting by from the nearby common. The Two Moors Way passes the door, linking Dartmoor and Exmoor.
The farm is surrounded by open moorland and rocky tors with extensive views and grazing cattle and sheep. The area is rich in history, with hut circles, burial chambers and ancient field boundaries. The deserted medieval settlement of Hutholes adjoins the farm.
Dashel Cottage is ideally located for walking from the door - to the north to the high expanse of Hameldown including Grimspound, or south along the sheltered West Webburn valley which is a haven for flora and fauna. The village of Widecombe in the Moor, with its famous September Fair and two welcoming pubs, is one and a half miles away. The nearest towns for shopping are Ashburton and Bovey Tracey, both about 15 minutes' drive. Princetown, Chagford, Totnes, Dartmouth and Exeter are well worth visiting. The various South Devon coastal resorts are about an hour away.
Dogs are welcome, and can be exercised on the enclosed farmland, but please check with us on the whereabouts of livestock first. Dogs need to be booked in and there is a charge of £10 a week per dog.
Short breaks of less than a week are charged at 70% of the weekly rate.
Dashel Cottage is centrally heated, has free wifi, and a Sky satellite box with Sky Sports package.
Please note: The cottage no longer has a woodburning stove

“The most amazing find, perfect in every way”
Simply fabulous. We had a wonderful stay at Dashel Cottage. It is in the most picturesque and peaceful setting, surrounded by animals and a step away from the moor. Venetia and Norman are charming hosts who made us feel instantly at home, especially welcoming my son to the farm and introducing him to the animals and tractors. The cottage itself is perfect, immaculately clean and tidy, with lovely touches to go above and beyond a typical holiday cottage. It is safe for toddlers with plenty of room for a family. I cannot wait to go back.
Owner's reply: We are so glad you enjoyed your short stay so much and we hope you will be able to stay longer next time!
This was the perfect base for which to visit family for a couple of days. Lovely quaint little cottage and the perfect sleeping arrangements for our 4 children (10, 8 and twins 3) The surroundings were utterly idillic - watching horses go by the front door and even an old vintage tractor. We were very welcomed by Venetia and Norman who showed the children the baby chicks and other farm animals. Pleasantly surprised to find we had sky and WiFi and also table tennis which the kids loved! What a perfect and relaxing way to spend a couple of days. Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality. Highly recommended to those who want to get away from the city life and indulge in utter tranquility. Hopefully see you next year!
Owner's reply: Dear Nicky, Thank you for this review; it was a pleasure to meet you and the family, and we hope to see you again.
“A Dartmoor Delight”
Our 2nd stay in the area and Brimble Cottage provided a spacious, warm, quiet and comfortable base for our weekend break. Lovely hosts too. Fabulous location if you like to get away from it all but so much to explore from the door. We visited with our dogs and took them to Bellever Forest, plus a fantastic circular walk from Haytor Rocks to Hounds Tor and pretty Widecombe which we viewed from a walk to Bone Hill Rocks - stunning scenery wherever you look.
Owner's reply: Thank you so much for taking the trouble to review your stay at Brimble Cottage. We are glad that Dartmoor worked its magic and we hope to see you again one day.
“Dashel Cottage - Excellent”
This was 8th visit, all different times of year. Very cosy, clean, comfortable cottage in a tranquil area on a working small holding / farm and central to anything you would wish to do in Dartmoor or South Devon. Nothing is more than an hour away plus many local walks to enjoy. Perfect for us and our two spaniels. Still discovering new walks, picnic areas and pubs. Owners extremely helpful and a very nice couple.
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your comments about the cottage and our Dartmoor location. We look forward to seeing you next time!
A wonderful place to stay, everything we needed was provided. A good central location to explore the beautiful Dartmoor and surrounding area. Would definitely recommend.
Owner's reply: Thank you so much for this. It was lovely having you.
We had previously stayed in the cottage next door, Brimble Cottage, and when it was booked for the dates we wanted we booked this smaller but way cosier cottage next door. The children loved it in the room on the top floor and loved watching Daddy make the fire one evening! Venita and Norman are a lovely couple, welcoming and helpful when needed. We love the fact that at the top of the road you have the moors and there are beautiful beaches and interesting places to visit all within reasonable driving distances. The trip from Starcross to Exmouth on the ferry was one of the favourite trips this time. We are happily exhausted at the end of our stay. We would stay in either cottage again! Thank you Venita and Norman!
Owner's reply: We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Dashel Cottage and found so much to do from a base on Dartmoor. Kind Regards Venetia
“Don't tell everyone . Want to go back again and it will be full !!”
In the middle of the moor, charming, calm and well equipped house, perfect position for walks on the moors. “A truly relaxing and comfortable little haven”
We have visited this cottage several times now. It is warm and comfortable and we once again, felt wonderfully looked after. It is a true haven of peace and quiet - you really don't need the car and if you are planning for long walks on the moor, you only have to walk out of the front door to find them. An excellent base also for travelling further afield and plenty of good places to eat locally. From experience, this is the perfect base in good weather or bad (it is Dartmoor, after all!) and our little dog always goes home happy and exhausted. Thank you for looking after us so well.
Owner's reply: Dear Sarah, Thank you for taking the trouble to write about your stay. We are glad that you enjoyed Dartmoor and the cottage, and we look forward to seeing you again. Venetia
