The Owl is situated in the small hamlet of Ashen Cross just half a mile from the village of Pelynt (with convenience stores, post office, quirky tea room and a thriving village pub) and we are less than 2 miles from the stunning South Coast of Cornwall.

The beautiful beach at Talland Bay and the quintessential fishing village of Polperro are just a 40 minute walk, with the bustling seaside town of Looe less than 3 miles away - making this the perfect location from which to explore and enjoy this ever popular part of Cornwall. The Monkey Sanctuary (7.5 miles), the thriving commercial seaport and designated area of outstanding beauty of Fowey (just over 7 miles using the Bodinnick ferry crossing), The Eden Project (18 miles), and a host of other activities and attractions are all within easy reach.

But it is the semi-rural setting which makes this holiday destination extra special. As well as having secluded outdoor space, guests are able to relax and recharge in over 3 acres of land which includes two beautiful fresh water lakes. A strategically placed Summer House provides the perfect place to lose yourself in the wild and wonderful world of the natural inhabitants here.

The large lake is well stocked with fish and when you stand on the decking by the summer house the carp, roach, trench and orf, along with our resident ducks Doris and Declan, will all come over to take a look at you. Guests angling for a catch will find the perfect spot to tickle their fisherman's tales - previous guests report they've had some of their best ever fishing days down here. Dogs with energetic owners will find plenty of space to run up on the field.

The Owl is one of only two holiday cottages on offer here, enjoying complete privacy from each other and the adjacent Barn where the owners live. The cottages have been welcoming guests for over 15 years, and new owners Geoff and Tracy Tyrrell are keen to make the very most of what they have to offer; improvements are being made all the time - the welcome hamper which includes home-baked scones and bread, as well as locally sourced clotted cream, beer and cider, and a generous helping of milk, butter, jam, and other basics is winning everyone's seal of approval. Our guests also enjoy mid-week fresh towels.

Access to The Owl is via a stone, railed, staircase leading up from the ample car parking offered in the courtyard.

Originally a grain store, the property was converted in 1997 and offers spacious, open plan living, kitchen, dining space. There is a large master bedroom and a good size twin bedroom (with a wall mounted flat screen TV). The bathroom offers shower over bath. The cottage is furnished to ensure home-from-home comfort, with a flat screen TV, a modern wood-burning stove and a generous selection of books, DVDs and games to help you relax and enjoy your stay. The kitchen has everything you would expect to find in a modern kitchen with additional luxuries like the Nespresso coffee machine and a dish washer. The twin bedroom has a wall mounted flat screen TV.

The private garden is accessed by French doors leading out from the living area. A range of seating means you can always find a perfect spot to sit to soak up the day or night. We've added a Weber BBQ and provide a pack of coals to get you all fired up.

Whilst being fully respectful of your privacy, living on-site means we're always here if you need us.

“Home away from home”

Reviewed 11 Jan 2017

What an incredible time we've had. The cottage is stunning, cozy and immaculate. Even though we very much visited in Cornwall's off season, we've had a fantastic break. Everything you could need is in the cottage and, while my fiancé couldn't be torn away from the log fire or fancy coffee machine, I appreciated that everything inside is clean and of a great quality - each item has been thoughtfully chosen for the guests' convenience and comfort. I put us on television ban but there are two TVs and a DVD player but, if like us (me), you are there for quality family time and relaxation, you can borrow a book, game or jigsaw to enjoy in front of the fire - you can even swap your own book for a new one when you've finished. We had some great meals helped by the well equipped kitchen - thanks for the dishwasher - and there's plenty of space inside and out for dining. What makes this cottage stand out from anywhere else I have rented are the hosts who cannot do enough for you. We were welcomed with milk and eggs, freshly baked bread and cream teas to be washed down with locally sourced drinks and, on my fiancé's birthday, Tracy made us a delicious cake. Our dog enjoyed cuddles and biscuits and I enjoyed the great idea of a very cheaply priced minibar in the summer house where you can have a glass of wine whilst chatting to the resident duck at the fishing pond. Thank you very much for a wonderful break!

So glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Looking forward to welcoming you back again soon xx

“Beautiful, comfortable, spotlessly clean, dog friendly cottage”

What a find! We absolutely loved staying in the Owl. Tracey and Geoff made us feel right at home from our very first telephone conversation until the day we left (although we didn't want to leave!) Beautiful, comfortable, spotlessly clean, dog friendly cottage. Tracy - the scones and cake were delicious. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the personal touches were amazing . We were given great advice on what to see and where to go and fell in love with Cornwall. Why haven't we been before??? We will be back for sure.

So pleased you enjoyed your stay and really looking forward to welcoming you back again soon xx

Wonderful! What a fabulous stay we had at The Owl! We were greeted with a delicious home made afternoon tea which went down a treat after a long journey! Tracy and Geoff have thought of everything and were always on hand should we have needed them - we will definitely be coming back....sooner the better!

So glad you enjoyed your stay and really looking forward to seeing you again soon xx

“Great place to stay”

Tracey the owner is warm & friendly. We had home made scones clotted cream & jam, home made bread waiting for us. Lovely place to stay. A lake with summer house, drinks available from the fridge, great setting. Anything we needed Tracey was happy to help us with. The cottage was central, most things were only a few miles drive. Nice pub & local spa supermarket less than a mile away.

Thank you for your kind comments. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon xx

“Absolutely fabulous place to stay, highly recommend.”

Ashen Cross is a fantastic place to spend a holiday, very close to beautiful Looe and other lovely places to visit. Never had such a fantastic welcome as we've had here, the owners cannot do enough for their guests. Can't wait to visit again.

Thank you for your kind feedback, Laura. Looking forward to welcoming you and your family again very soon xx

“Incredible place to stay”

This place was perfect ! We went for the Easter weekend and had such a lovely time. The warm welcome we got from Tracey with the special touch of fresh home made bread , eggs , scones with cream and jam and a little Easter treat was such a perfect touch. The cottage is very big for 4 adults beautifully presented and well maintained everything you need from home to home comfort . Local places to visit and enjoy the Cornish scenery. Tracey was always to hand to recommend the best places for food and drinks. We will differently return soon as it's the perfect place for some well deserved RnR ! You would not want to stay anywhere else.!

So glad we'll get to see you all again. Thank you for your kind words xx
