Location description from owner

The Cumbria region

The Lake District is home to England's five highest mountains, England's deepest lake, 2175 miles of footpaths, countless cycle trails, hills, valleys, rich woodlands and forests and a wealth of flora and fauna, as well as quintessential picture postcard villages and stunning scenery around every corner.

The Lake District is famed for being the UK's 'Adventure Capital'. Walking across the sands of Morecambe Bay with a guided party is an amazing experience unique in Britain.

All of the towns in the region are pleasant. Kendal and Ulverston are market towns, Ulverston also famous for its Laurel and Hardy connections and museum, Bowness and Grange waterfront-based resorts. Windermere and Ambleside are other centres. Watch also for literary connections with Beatrix Potter, Ruskin, and of course Wordsworth and the lakes poets.

The Lake District peninsulas where the lakes meet Morecambe Bay boast estuaries, abundant bird life and attractions such as the Lakeland, Motor Museum, Aquarium, and even a Zoo. The hills here are lower than the mountains of the centre but afford comparable views for less effort and in a milder, sunnier climate. At busy seasons you will notice this part of the region is quieter too.

Lindale

Lindale climbs agreeably up the lower slopes of Newton Fell from the mouth of the Winster Valley. With a pub at the top and the bottom of the hill and a shop half way up it has everything you need.

The summit of Hampsfell also looks down on the village and over the Cartmel valley to the village of that name with its famous Priory and racecourse, and towards the sea at Grange. All of these are easy walks from Lindale.

Grange overSands is a seaside resort of particular charm. The Tourist office has details of guided walks across the Bay from Arnside, itself another pleasant resort, or just stroll along the promenade and watch out for the craft exhibitions there or the Edwardian festival in the summer.

You are only five minutes drive from Lake Windermere and the National Trust's access land and beach at Fellfoot park there. Take the tiny ferry or drive round to Lakeside opposite for Windermere steamers and a steam railway.

The Cumbria Cycle Way passes close to Lindale on its way round the county's coast. The tiny roads and low land of the Winster valley also make for pleasant cycling. More adventurous mountain biking is catered for at Grizedale forest a little further afield.

“Lovely bolt hole”

Reviewed 28 Feb 2014

Hidden in a small village (Lindale) is a veritable retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Every need is catered for with a kitchen and cosy lounge easily warmed by a lovely wood burner. For those needing more modern comforts is a very efficient central heating system. There is a good sized double bed room and a very comfortable bed. It is very well placed for a great range of walks and for those who enjoy eating out there are two pubs in walking distance with a whole range of eateries that are easily accessible by car or bike. Would definitely recommend for those needing some calm, beauty and uncomplicated living.

“"Perfection!!!"”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2012

A truly fantastic cottage, in a superb location. Everything my Girlfriend and I could ask for in a holiday cottage. Village of Lindale is tranquil place with 2 very good pubs to relax, eat and drink in. Of note is the Lindale Inn (2 minute walk from cottage). Rose Cottage is an ideal base if you wish to explore the Lakes. Log fire is a treat to come home to after a good day of activity. Fully recommend Grizdale forest for mountain biking and Go Ape. Cumbrian Coastal Path runs through Lindale with many other public paths routing back to Rose Cottage -OS Map in the cottage - bonus :) Si & Bex - Dunkeswell, Devon
