The Lothians region

Officially the sunniest and driest area in Scotland, with more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country, you’ll have all the time you need to make the most of a visit to Scotland’s sunshine coast.

East Lothian & Beyond

East Lothian is one of Scotland's best kept secrets.

With a unique microclimate that offers more sunshine than most other locations in Scotland, it is rich is rolling farmland, cliff top walks, beaches, golf courses, rambling cycle routes, historic houses and castles, charming villages and seaside town - in fact everything you might want for a relaxing holiday or a short break in the country.

Stately Homes and Castles

Tantallon Castle, to the west and just a few miles to the other side of North Berwick, is one of Scotland's best! Originally built by the dreaded Douglas family in the 14th C, it sits on top of a cliff and has never succumbed to storm, only to guile.

It may feel like a million miles away, but it’s only minutes from Edinburgh by car, train or bus!

North Berwick

With over 40 miles of magnificent coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, spectacular cliffs, award-winning tourist attractions and the world’s finest selection of links golf courses, East Lothian combines the best of Scotland in miniature!

About East Lothian

From the excitement of Musselburgh Racecourse to the awesome sight of Concorde, in all her glory; the award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre to the impressive clifftop fortress of Tantallon Castle, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

There really is something for everyone!

The area is home to a rich variety of wildlife and thousands of seabirds arriving each year to nest on its islands and coastline.

Charming towns and villages invite you to browse in art galleries, museums and gift shops.

East Lothian is the ancient home of golf. You’ll find some of the great links and parkland courses of the world here, including the world famous Muirfield Links.

Known as the garden of Scotland, you can savour delicious fresh local produce, as well as seafood specialities in East Lothian’s delicatessens, restaurants and cafes. Look out for the farmers’ markets in Haddington and the quarterly Food Festival at North Berwick, where you can try some of the best food and drink to be found in East Lothian. And don’t forget to sample Scotland’s national drink at the five star Glenkinchie Distillery.

.

Beaches and Walks

There is plenty of golden sand in East Lothian. Probably the best beaches are Seacliff, just past Tantallon Castle on the other side of North Berwick, Yellowcraig, 2 miles away towards North Berwick, and Freshwater Haven, in which the action in Robert Louis Stevenson's book "Pavilion on the Links" is set, just the other side of Muirfield golf course.

Boat Trips

There are two boat trips available from North Berwick harbour; to Fidra (the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island") and to the Bass Rock. The Bass Rock is a paradise for ornithologists who will see gannet, guillemot, razorbill, puffin, shag, kittiwake and fulmar. You should go. It is a volcanic rocky crag and one time prison, standing guard on the southern coast of the First of Forth. A trip round it will take about one hour by boat piloted by the Marr family (Tel 892838). If you arrange it in advance you can land on them both.

Edinburgh - Scotland's Capital City.30 minutes drive is Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city, reflecting the history; culture and personality of the nation.

"Seahaven was perfect for our us, lovely well equipped apartment"

We stayed at Seahaven for a week in August this year and we all enjoyed it very much. Our kids are still asking when can we go back! The apartment had everything we needed. There is a great secure back garden which was perfect for our little ones to run around in , plus a decked area for us to sit and enjoy the good weather. The location is good too being only 2 minutes walk to the High Street where you will find all the local shops and bars, North Berwick We will be back to again next year aand will certainly book Seahaven , Thanks to the girls at the office, Julie and Gillian they also helped make our holiday special

"Very nice apartment in wonderful town North Berwick"

Family of 3 (children 9) stayed for two week in June . Cottage was totally ideal for a family and location was perfect with superb local coastal walks and easy access to Edinburgh and surrounding area. Apartment has all the amenities, whilst also offering peace and quiet. I have already recommended to friends.
