The Central Scotland/Strathclyde region

Arran is one of the nearest islands to the mainland,. With its rugged mountains ,breathtaking scenery and lovely sandy beaches it is often described as Scotland in miniature .As you travel the 57miles around the island you will encounter pretty villages and breathtaking seaviews around each corner .Arran has a mild temperate climate due to its proximity to the Gulf stream growing many exotic plants and even palm trees. The Island is very accessible from the mainland being less than an hour to the ferry terminal at Ardrossan from Glasgow and Prestwick International Airports.Boarding the ferry, the crossing takes just 55 minutes or if you wish an alternative route take the scenic approach from Cloanig on Mull of Kintyre to Lochranza on the north of the Island.

Isle of Arran

Whiting Bay -situated 9miles south from the ferry terminal at Brodick is a relaxed friendly village with a number of small shops catering for all your needs. The village has two quality restaurants Coast and Trafalgar,Bar Eden offers traditional pub grub while the Coffee Pot always tempts you to sample its delicious home baking.A visit to the local Art Gallery is also recommended .There is a beach side Putting Green and a challenging 18 hole Golf Course with stunning uninterrupted views of the Ayrshire coast including the famous championship course at Turnberry .For children there is an interesting play park and football pitch. The more adventurous might like to walk up to the amazing Glenashdale Falls situated high above the village and on the return journey stop and visit the prehistoric burial chambers known as the Giants Graves.

Nearby Holy Island -inhabited by Buddhists monks is well worth a visit .The short ferry crossing runs frequently from the pier at Lamlash

Brodick the largest village on the island is the home of the majestic National Trust castle that overlooks the bay with its stunning gardens interesting history, woodland walks ,children's play areas it is well worth a visit .Nearby The Isle of Arran Heritage Museum is also worth the nostalgic trip back in time. If the weather is a little bit inclement the Spa Resort at Auchrannie would help to pass the hours away.In Brodick you will find a wide variety of things to do and places to eat including the recently refurbished boutique Douglas Hotel opposite the ferry terminal .

Goat Fell -almost a munro towering high above the village is waiting to be climbed. The view from the summit on a clear day is sensational .

Travel north from Brodick to Lochranza where you will find the islands only distillery, during this visit you may be fortunate enough to spot a Golden Eagle or a White Stag.

Continue your journey to Blackwaterfoot to visit the famous Kings Caves where King Robert The Bruce had his encounter with the spider. On the way you will pass Shiskine Golf Course which boasts 12 holes only.

Talking of golf there are 7 Golf Courses on the island and there is a rover ticket available to enable you to play them all.
