The Lake District
If you're a lover of the great outdoors, the Lake District is one corner of England where you'll want to linger. This sweeping panorama of slate-capped fells, craggy hilltops, misty mountain tarns and glittering lakes has been pulling in the crowds ever since the Romantics pitched up in the early 19th century, and it remains one of the country's most popular beauty spots. Literary sights abound, from Wordsworth's boyhood school to the lavish country estate of John Ruskin at Brantwood, and there are enough hilltop trails, hidden pubs and country hotels to fill a lifetime of visits.
Keswick is a favourite holiday destination in all seasons of the year and rightfully so. This lovely market town nestles at the foot of Skiddaw and on the shores of Derwentwater lake amidst some of the most beautiful Lakeland scenery.
Delightful walks can be enjoyed in the surrounding hills...Catbells is one of the most popular offering visitors a fine lake and mountain panorama from its summit. The highest tops of Skiddaw and Blencathra are there for the hardy walkers and the famous Sharp Edge on Blencathra is one of the finest ridge walks in the area. The Castlerigg Stone Circle, near Keswick is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and sits on the level top of a low hill with views across to Skiddaw, Blencathra and Lonscale Fell.
Keswick has live theatre at 'The Theatre by the Lake' and a good local cinema to keep you entertained. Friendly local pubs and places to eat offer a whole range of prices and cuisines and the town is served by well-stocked shops. The famous 'Pencil Museum' attracts visitors from all over the world as does the 'Cars of the Stars' exhibition where you can see all manner of famous vehicles...from James Bond's Aston Martin to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Lake cruises and rowing boats can be enjoyed on Derwentwater and you can use the boat service on the lake as a jumping off point for walks further down the Borrowdale Valley. Look out for the annual Jazz festival in Keswick, which is always well supported. There is also a popular and challenging climbing wall and various opportunities for cycle hire. With its lively weekly market selling produce and local crafts plus a wide choice of individual shop, including butchers, bakers and an excellent supermarket, you will find plenty of ideas for your self-catering meals and for gifts to take home to family and friends.

"This was the best cottage we have ever stayed in, so clean, warm & cosy"
The cottage was within 5 mins walk of keswick and the lake,so we not have to take the car every time we went out, just left the car in the private drive all safe. The cottage was so clean and warm with the underfloor heating and everything you would ever need, the shower worked really well, better than our shower at home. We had a really good time as it was our 40th wedding anniversary and we could not have picked a better place to stay. The owner Jana was so lovely and half way through our weeks holiday she text to make sure everything was alright. Chris & Jane in Devon.

"beautiful guest house, wonderful views of the mountains from the house"
We stayed in a beautiful self-contained annex of the guest house which had everything you could wish for. Stunning views of the mountains, within walking distance to the shops, restaurants, bars etc. The owners Jana and Martin were so helpful and couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome and they were full of local knowledge of the area which helped us greatly.

"Very nice place to stay"
My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in this very clean well designed property, From the outside it looks small but it is very spacious inside and has everything you need for a pleasant holiday. The location is brilliant as it is only 5 minutes walk from the town centre and lovely walks. Jana the owner was really nice and very helpful, we were on our way and expected to have to wait to enter the cottage as we were a couple of hours early, however Jana sent me a message to let us know that she had finished cleaning earlier and we could have the key when we were ready, which I thought was very nice. We would definitely go back and maybe even book for the new B & B which will be ready next summer in the house attached.
