The Cumbria/Lake District
Ambleside nestles on the northern shores of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake. The village is enchanting for its traditional Lakeland cottages and ancient buildings, and has developed pleasantly to become one of the Lake District's most cosmopolitan village communities. Contemporary shops line the busier streets, interspersed with indulgent cafes, quirky local shops and a range of acclaimed Lake District restaurants and eateries to suit all budgets. The village centre has two high quality cinema venues, and mixes modern bars with cosy and traditional Lakeland pubs.
A stay in this historic conservation area of Ambleside gives you the opportunity to enjoy the quieter side of Lakeland village life, without straying too far from Ambleside's excellent shops, restaurants, pubs and historic attractions. Slightly elevated from the village centre, the views are enhanced taking in Ambleside's dramatic backdrop of mountains and fells.
Stroll outside of the village centre, and you'll find Lake Windermere cruises departing regularly from Ambleside Pier at Waterhead. The 'steamers' ferry passengers the full length of the lake, with stops at bustling Bowness and serene Lakeside - a wonderful way to explore car-free!
Ambleside has long been a popular base for walking in the Lake District, with so many famous routes close by to explore. Pick up some tips in one of the many expert outdoor stores, and you can even reach many popular starting points by bus.
Ambleside is well served by pubs, restaurants and three cinemas all within a five minute walk.
