“Excellent location, pubs & good walks nearby, superb accommodation” We had stayed in another cottage a few weeks previously (Hardknott Cottage) and clearly enjoyed that so much we came back again! However, this time we wanted to try a slightly different cottage, so we went for Stanley Ghyll. I have stayed in the lakes several times over the years, but always in the main areas, on the eastern or nothern side. I wanted to take my girlfriend somewhere different so i decided on Eskdale which is an area i had never experienced before. I must say that i prefer this area now, since it's got everything you want; the "Lakes experience" - but not in the mad crowds of somewhere like Keswick. The cottage itself is fantastic as it’s a secluded detached building. The cottages are set in a hamlet called Boot, which has a pub 2 minutes walk away, and another one about 3 minutes away from that! They do fantastic food and beer. There are plenty of other choices too. Regarding things to do; of course there are walks, there's the beach not far away, there's a bunch of hills to climb and Sca Fell pike is close by if you feel like climbing a mountain (which we did and it was very satisfying). While we were there we also popped into Gosforth and had a pottery lesson which was good fun too. I think that the high quality of these cottages + the superb location offer an ideal experience to "get away from it all" without having to book flights, or worry about passports, or whether you're carrying over 100ml of liquid! This is only my second ever review on Trip Advisor and i only write something if a place has had a big impact on me - in this case it was a very positive one.

“A great place to stay for a weekend hike.” The house was warm, comfortable and clean with lovely vistas and easy access to the mountains. The beds were comfortable and the sofa bed worked a treat.

“Gather together a group of family and friends and go to Boot” Have been to Bridge End Cottages before and enjoyed it so much that we decided to invite some friends along. Stayed in the Farmhouse for the first time and we were quite stunned how well appointed a rental cottage could be. Could not fault anything. Good kitchen facilities and lounge and even better was a separate dining room that could sit us all. The ensuite bathroom to our room was everything you needed but the second bathroom with its stand alone bath and separate shower is brilliant. Boot is a fantastic place to stay and we had great weather when we were there. Got the steam train to The Green and enjoyed George IV that is now a great inn. Walked back in the dark and were offered a lift for last mile in the back of an army truck. Just for the sheer fun of it we went and laughed all the way at the bumpy ride. The next day. Feeling ambitious we walked the three miles to Hardknott Fort. The last half mile up the steepest hill I've ever encountered. My lungs and legs were telling me to stop and almost did, but when we got there the view over the Eskdale Valley was worth it. One of our party had taken a backpack, which contained a can of lager for us all and we really just stood there and admired the beauty of what we could see and agreed at that moment we were happy. Walking back we stopped at a great pub (and hotel, I think) called the Woolpack and the chap behind the bar was the the army truck man! Loved the whole weekend so much that we have booked again in a smaller cottage for the new year.
