The Lazio region

Rome is the main city of Lazio, but there are lovely towns and villages in the vicinity, including the Pope's summer residence at Castel Gandolfo(Lago Albano); Nerola with its fairy tale castle, Tivoli where Villa Adriana is and hills of Sabina full of olive groves, including Fara Sabina, Montopoli, and Civita Castellana. There are also several lakes, including Lago di Bracciano, Lago di Nemi and Lago Albano which have lovely villages as well as excellent swimming as well as food. Don't forget the beachside towns such as Fregene,Tor Vaianica, Ostia and Ladispoli; and especially don't forget La Posta Vecchia, John Pauly Getty's former resindence, now a Relais Chateaux hotel.

Where to start? The ancient city has so much to offer from seeing the ancient landmarks to shopping to eating, drinking great wine and strolling to be seen (la passegiata). Make sure you check out "The Piazzas": Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps); Campo di Fiori (market and best pizza takeaway in Rome); Piazza di Argentina (for cat lovers); Piazza di Poppolo (2 basilicas and coffee culture); di Navona (ice cream) and, of course, Piazza san Pietro - which, technically, is in another country in the Vatican.

Everyone knows you should go to the artisan's quarter (Trastevere) for an evening/night stroll and dinner but did you know Gianicolo will show you Rome spread out at your feet from this lofty perch? or that a peek through the keyhole on Monte Aventino at the Santa Sabina will give you a unique view of a famous landmark?

Some of the best art in Rome can be seen in the churches for a small contribution to the church (just don't go during Sunday mass). Stroll on the Appia Antica and see the catacombs near our apartment to see what Rome was like during the times when Pagans ruled and Christians had to hide.
