Magnetic and charismatic, Tuscany has it all: extraordinary countryside, glorious coast, fabulous rustic food, and the world’s best art. Not bad for a region only a tad bigger than Wales. Whether you choose fascinating Florence or rural Pitigliano, you’ll never look back.
Fine Art & Even Finer Wine
This region of central Italy holds some of the world’s most important artistic treasures, including Michelangelo’s statue of David and many Botticelli masterpieces in the galleries of Florence. But art isn’t the only human creation celebrated here: the rolling hills surrounding the city are covered by a blanket of vineyards, their neat lines disappearing to the horizon.
Throw open the windows of your villa or apartment in Tuscany and you’re pretty much guaranteed a jaw-dropping view. This could be the majestic peaks of the Apennine Mountains or the white sandy beaches of the Tuscan Archipelago’s islands, including Elba and Giannutri. Don’t miss the coastal clifftop villages of Cinque Terre, either, where narrow streets, colourful houses and pretty squares show a nostalgic side of Italy.
Cookery classes are a favourite activity for visitors to Tuscany, eager to learn the basics to take home as an everlasting souvenir. Wasting food is a big no-no in Tuscany, so many of the region’s best-loved dishes, like Panzaletta and Ribolita, include stale bread and lashings of olive oil (harvested from groves scattered across the countryside). Another of the region’s famous exports is the rare and expensive truffle.

Elegant Apartment in central Pisa - San Zeno
An excellent apartment
This apartment is only a few minutes away from the Tower! A small Co-op supermarket just round the corner and a lovely bakery 2 minutes away. Bus services just around the corner too, if you don't want to walk down to the Train Station (took us 30 minutes and we are in our 70s). The apartment itself is extremely well appointed and everything in it seems to be new. Beatrice's mother met us and showed us all the amenities and explained where to buy our bus tickets (in the Tobacconist's downstairs).
The only downside could be street noise from the bin lorries from 6 a.m. But the double glazed windows cuts out most street noise. A really impressive apartment. …
Holiday Apartment in the historical palace.Marina
Lovely Place to Stay!
This is a spacious and elegant apartment in an historic building. It was very clean and pleasantly decorated. The beds were comfortable with good linens; bathrooms were spacious and clean with good shower pressure. The kitchen more than adequate (we do cook, too many meals out can be boring and costly). As with several of our Italian rentals, there was no automatic coffee machine. Perhaps the only caveat was that the building’s elevator, which we were advised was “sensitive”, didn’t work for us. If climbing stairs are an issue this could be a problem, but we told ourselves the exercise was good after eating some great Italian dishes! We look forward to returning to this property. …

Picturesque and Quiet!
I actually got very sad when it was time to leave, wishing I had booked a few more nights. Clean, beautiful, silent and comfortable. Miria and her husband were incredibly kind and went out of their way to make us comfortable. Make sure you rent a car, this property is very off the beaten path down a long dirt road and no bus/train is anywhere near it. Perfect vacation rental! …

Lovely, well equipped appartment with some fascinating original features. Very handy for the bus station and town centre. Train station not to far either. Our hosts were very welcoming and took the trouble to explain everything. A suburb base for exploring the area. …

The owner is gracious, friendly and enthusiastic about the surrounding countryside and all the offerings and adventures you can experience. I highly recommend a stay at La Scala - a warm , comfortable and delightful home in an extraordinary setting. …
