The Cornwall region
The South West area
Manaccan is about 9 miles or 15 km to the old market town of Helston which offers supermarkets and a wide range of shops. The City of Truro is about 50 minutes drive with Falmouth, St. Ives and Penzance about 45 Minutes. The Helford River and the east side of the Lizard peninsula has small sand and shingle beaches whilst the West side, which faces the atlantic, has bigger sandy beaches with some surf.
The north Cornish coast has the widest beaches and the best surf. The Helford River and Falmouth bay offer sheltered waters for sailing, fishing or general pottering in boats.
Cornish Gardens are famously attractive, particularly in the early spring. From Helford there is a ferry to the gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan (NT) which are both outstanding.
Poldhu Cove - 20 minutes by car
Famous as the place from which the first Trans-Atlantic radio signal was sent in 1901. A popular sandy beach in a pretty location. There are lovely coastal walks with spectacular views around the cove.
Kennack Sands - 20 minutes by car
Two sheltered sandy beaches with lots of sand, a stream and rock pools. Geologically interesting. Popular with families and good for surfing, for surfers of all abilities.
Kynance Cove - 30 minutes by car
Popular since Victorian times, the brilliant turquoise water and white sand, with islands, caves and unexpected views are still a powerful draw today. All in all Kynance is one of the prettiest coves in Cornwall and as a result one of the most painted and photographed.
The small and picturesque village of Manaccan nestles in one of Cornwall's quietest and most unspoilt corners. A cluster of houses surround an ancient church with a shop, a pub and a bistro-cafe enhancing the little community. The village occupies a sunny and elevated position between the south side of the Helford River and the little creek that runs from the sea up to Carne. ??Wooded footpaths lead from the village down timeless routes where 10 minutes walking will bring you to the water's edge at Carne and St. Anthony is a further stroll along the wooded lane. It is about 15 to 20 minutes down to Helford. From Helford the section of the South West Coastal Path along the estuary to the sea should not be missed. Further paths upriver, including those to Frenchmans Creek are also certainly worth exploring. Tennis courts can be rented at a very reasonable rate at the top of the village and boats of all shapes and sizes are available for hire at St. Anthony and Helford. (It's best to book early for these during July and August). ??The village shop and post office is a real bonus but there are also supermarkets in the town of Helston which is about 9 miles away. Fresh fish and organic produce including the very best cornish pasties can be found at Gear Farm shop, about 3 miles away near St Martin.
