Description

St. Mary's is a part converted 15th Century Church on the edge of the picturesque lake at Talyllyn. This historic building has an amazing Welsh oak roof structure and a Tudor painted ceiling. Many of the original features remain including the pulpit, the organ, font and many of the pews.

This stunning part of Snowdonia is famous for its beauty and is an area of Special Scientific Interest. The walk to the summit of Cadair Idris begins on your doorstep, and four miles down the road is the Talyllyn Railway which steams down the valley to Tywyn.

A holiday with a difference...

The ancient 2*listed Church was given a lifeline to safeguard its future when planning permission was granted ...we were able to create an area for comfortable living within its walls whilst retaining all it's original features...certain conditions set out by the National Park Authority meant that a non standard Eco toilet system had to be installed ...different but all compliant with 21st Century

“Unique and Interesting stay”

Reviewed 16 Oct 2016

Stayed here for a week with a friend after being recommended by my sister & her husband after their stay last year. As many others have described below this is quite a place. We heard from a friend of Peters nearby that this is a labour of love and not one of profit hence don't be surprised by Peters request on arrival that you be careful with use of lights and heating..all heating bar the pod and vestry (which are snug and cosy) disappears through the roof anyway so we didn't use any and were perfectly OK as out and about all day. So much to do and see locally that I almost found myself wishing for a wet day to spend here too! Kitchen has electric oven & there is a toaster, grill oven, microwave, knife block and even a cafetière so you will want for nothing! Thank you Peter for this unique opportunity and I wish you all future success.

Glad you enjoyed yourselves here at St.Mary's...I hope my greetings chat didn't unnerve you both ... I go on about lots of things to bring you up to speed with some of the quirkier issues that the old building has ...and indeed the heating of the main hall of the Church is always on my list ..I only ask that the heaters are used sensibly as it is a huge space to manage..and the birds on the roof outside get most of the benefit .. Thanks for visiting St.Mary's and in doing so you are helping fund it's future well being ... I do hope you will call this way again. Pete

“Secluded Getaway with a difference”

Reviewed 12 Jan 2015

We wanted somewhere quiet and away from it all after a hectic year and St Mary's was exactly the right choice. The church has been extremely well renovated to provide comfortable accommodation within the constraints of planning - a fabulous job has been done still leaving the main part of the church untouched. We loved the acoustics and sat a couple of nights in the church listening to music. The Pen y Bont hotel across the road was warm and welcoming and the views were spectacular with plenty of walks on offer. On New Year's Eve we sat at the top of the Churchyard watching the fireworks across the lake - a really fabulous start to 2015. Thanks to Peter for his hospitality - especially trying to find us a mechanic! If you have been put off by the Eco Loo comments - which we very nearly were - don't be. I'm so glad we decided to experience St Mar's ourselves - Thank you for a lovely stay.

Hello Both ..Thank you for your positive review and thanks for venturing to come so far to spend a special time here at St.Mary's ..I'm glad you weren't disappointed . It was wise to bring your bikes with you as there are some brilliant places to visit ... I'm pleased that New Years Eve was enjoyed ..the firework display courtesy of the Old Rectory, viewed from the Church , must have been quite a treat .. See you again one day maybe.. Pete

“Wonderful”

Reviewed 31 Dec 2014

This was our 2nd visit to St Marys and we enjoyed it even more than the 1st time. Stayed over the Christmas period and loved the peace and quiet once again. Excellent walks with our dogs who just slept the whole time in front of the fire when they got back. We are synchronising our diaries to return again next year. Thank you once again Peter for allowing us to stay in such a lovely place.

Thank you both for returning to St.Mary's and to choose us at Christmas time ... a very peaceful time at Talyllyn ..the chill of winter doesn't spoil the beauty of our valley..and indeed I think the walks are to be enjoyed even more with the knowledge of a return to the warmth of the Old Church and a promise of a welcome cuppa... I will look forward to seeing you again.. and here's wishing you a Very Happy New Year.. Pete

“Wonderful New Experiences”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2014

We would like to say how much we enjoyed our holiday. St Mary's Chapel was a delightful and unusual holiday let, in a glorious setting by the Tal-y-llyn lake beneath the impressive Cadair Idris. In our mid-seventies we never thought to ever have had the experience of breakfasting in a churchyard , were we could watch the swifts swirling just over our heads and watching the antics of the little robin flitting around. Peter met us when we arrived and showed us around and explained how everything worked. We found the accommodation clean and comfortable and well equipped. That the body of the chapel has been left intact, and we were particularly interested in seeing the 1000 year old font. It was great having the Pen-y-Bont Hotel/Pub just a step across the road doing good food and real ale. It was especially convenient for us as preserved steam railway enthusiasts having the Tal-y-llyn narrow gauge railway just down the road at Abergynolwyn, and other lines all within a reasonable distance. Wonderful ! Thank you Peter.

Thank you both for this kind review .I'm so pleased that your daughter recommended St.Mary's to you ..it's good to know that your likes are simular ..! Hope to see you again one day . Regards Pete

“A perfect stay in a perfect location”

Reviewed 21 Jul 2014

Having travelled to North Wales numerous times, St Mary's has to be one of the prettiest places i've been too. Ideally located for travelling to the coast, both West and North, but quiet enough for beautiful walks, especially around the lake. Peter has done the most fantastic work making the bedroom pod warm and cosy, whilst keeping the main part of the church in keeping with its historic past. I urge you to have a week here.

Thanks for this positive review ...it was a pleasure to meet you both ...I'm well pleased that you enjoyed your stay at St.Mary's with it's beautiful surroundings ...and it would be good to see you here again one day ... With Regards Pete

“Hauntingly Beautiful”

Reviewed 5 Jul 2014

My wife Sammi and I love places that have history, Tal y Llyn Chapel oozes it. Peter has lovingly restored the chapel with great care not to destroy the true beauty of such an historic building. He was very informative and helpful but also gave us the time and space to explore this wonderful area. I will be definitely be returning.

Thank you both for coming so far to stay at St.Mary's .....it was an absolute pleasure to have you visit ...you really appreciated this historic building ....and I will look forward to welcoming you here again one day... With Regards Pete

“Third visit, speaks volumes.”

Reviewed 5 Jul 2014

This was our 3rd visit to the church and it was yet another lovely weeks holiday. The peace and tranquility are tangible. We were met again by Peter, who was painstakingly, cutting the grass around the graveyard. Unlike other visits, we didn't have any visitors to show round. We were disappointed, as we always like to show off Peter's hard work! We had some really good weather and managed to have 2 good cycle rides on disused railway tracks (Dolgellau to Barmouth and just outside Porthmadog to Carnarvon (cyclists interested in this check I.Net for map) Had a good meal at the Cross Foxes just outside Dolgellau. We were very sad to leave again, and will miss the view from the pod when we wake up tomorrow. Nice to have a week AWAY from a washing machine! To sum up, we're about to book up for another visit this time next year, so Peter and his beautiful property must be doing something right. Thanks for another lovely stay Peter, and we look forward to seeing you in 2015. Lynn and Brian

Thank you both for your kind review ..good thinking bring the bikes this time and discovering the cycleways around the area ...they don't come much better than the one from Dolgellau to Barmouth .. It's good to see you returning to Talyllyn yet again and appreciating the atmosphere and comfort that St.Mary's offers ... I look forward to your next visit in 2015... With Regards Pete

“Amazing!”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2014

Our stay at St Mary's was absolutely amazing. We were met and made so welcome by the owner Peter. The accommodation was of the highest standard and shows the love and care Peter has put into the converted chapel - it really was a delight to stay in - after being out visiting various places of interest or coming back down off the mountain it was just like going home... it really is such a nice place. I would highly recommend St Mary's and can say without hesitation you will not be disappointed in any way. Peter was available at the end of telephone if needed, however, the only time we needed to ring was to let him know that we were going. All you need to cook for yourselves or entertain yourselves was at hand - the chapel is very well equipped in every respect. We all had a fantastic stay and if I were to go back to that same area again, I would seek to book St Mary's as the place to stay.

What a very kind review ...so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday at St.Mary's and Talyllyn ....and being told what your profession was John all I can say is ...Matthew:11:28: ....!! Regards Pete

Warm, hands-on welcome to mid Wales from Pete, the owner, at restored Chapel in up-to-date accommodations. Morning pastoral happening with sheep and lambs over the fence, and old cemetery to explore adjacent.

Thanks so much for your review ...you were my first American visitors so I was well pleased about that ...and it's good to know that you enjoyed our peaceful surroundings...I hope that your continued journey around Wales impressed and that you'll call again one day .. Regards Pete
