Location description from owner

The England region

Created more than 900 years by William the Conqueror as a royal hunting ground, the New Forest has been protected over the centuries and still retains much of its original landscape. It is one of Englands most beautiful areas easily explored by walking, cycling or on horseback. Ponies and deer can be seen roaming freely.

Apart from the beauty of ancient oaks, majestic beeches and a myriad of funghi, visitors can enjoy the sights of birds of prey, foxes as well as other plentiful wildlife. The Forest retains a unique landscape which ranges from ancient woodland to heather-covered heath interspersed with picturesque thatched cottages and welcoming pubs.

Lyndhurst

The magnificent cedars of Ornamental Drive, Exbury Gardens with its exquisite display of azaleas and rhododendrons, Beaulieu's world famous National Motor Museum, Owl and Otter Farm at Ashurst, Paulton Amusement Park at Ower, seaside town of Lymington with its Saturday market and ferry to the Isle of Wight. The historic cities of Winchester and Portsmouth are all within easy driving distance and Stonehenge a day's outing, shopping at West Quay in nearby Southampton or Bournemouth.

“Adequate accomodation, if a little musty”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2013

The cottage is probably charming for those not used to old English period properties - it has many original features. We found it however quite musty and a little grubby, also old-fashioned. The staircase by the most obvious children's bedroom is lethal for small kids, so we had to shift the rooms around, which wasn't ideal. Two of the bedrooms are inter-connecting - i.e. you have to go through one to go down to the bathroom (or else try the lethal stairs in the middle of the night.). There is no upstairs bathroom. What you can't see on the photo is that the cottage is on a very busy and noisy main road. All in all, we thought the property was poorly described and over-priced. We loved the area though.

We are disappointed that the guest was not happy with her 2 day stay at our property. The cottage is a 400 year old, protected Grade II listed building, retaining most of the original features and it would be rather incongruous to have modern furnishing. The staircase in question is typical of the period and is fitted with a safety gate. Although the majority of our guests obviously have young children, the staircase has never posed a problem. All bedrooms have their own access. Regarding the location of the cottage - it is exactly as described on the site. Perhaps, as all over the Forest, during peak hours on a hot August weekend, the traffic may have been more intense. On reading our visitor book, guests will find it is full of enthusiastic compliments written by both children and adults. I would also like to add that many of our guests are returning clients.

“marvelous place”

We have been with 4 adults and 4 children at the Swan Green Cottages and we enjoyed staying there very much! The cottage is well decorated and friendly, also it has everything you need. The beds are good, good shower and the house is clean. We were free to use the fireplace. It has a nice garden and the view in frond of the cottage is beautiful. Also the wild horses The New Forest and the area around has a lot to see and to do! We hope to come back!

“Quaint and cosy”

Reviewed 9 Dec 2012

You get the WOW factor on opening the door. It is what you imagine a thatched cottage to be. It is quaint and higgledy piggledy, but deceptively spacious. Could have done with more information about where things were in the cottage as there was some antique furniture not in the best condition which reluctant to investigate when looking for things. It would also have been useful to know where the logs for the fire were stored as it was cold and damp in November. Slight damp in kitchen cupboards, which made contents smell musty but it was after the worst weekend of rain for many a year in the New Forest. Parking is slightly awkward due to the road outside being busy at peak times. Pub in easy walking distance with good food and open fire and friendly staff. Lyndhurst and the New Forest were easily walkable.

“Absolutely delightful”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2012

We were swept off our feet by this cottage. Of course, being two old thatched cottages knocked into one, it was quaint and quirky, and a bit low for tall people. But it was well equipped and very clean and comfortable. The traffic congestion in nearby Lyndhurst is awful but you can walk into town for the shops in 10-15 minutes and there are plenty of delightful parts of the New Forest to be enjoyed if you go in the opposite direction. We loved it !
