The Wales region

Gaer Hall is located very near to the Shropshire border with many places of historical interest such as Shrewsbury Abbey and the Roman ruins at Wroxeter. In addition to being the birth place of Charles Darwin, Shrewsbury has some excellent independent shops, riverside cafes and bars, stylish restaurants, and some beautiful Tudor buildings.

A little further afield you can also find the walled city of Chester with its famous 13th century Rows. For food-lovers you might want to head to Ludlow, Shropshire's food and drink capital which has a number of Michelin starred restaurants.

Mid-Wales is a long established mecca for walkers, and an area of exceptional natural beauty, with Pistell Rhaeadr (the tallest waterfall in Wales and England), Rodney's Pillar, and Lake Vyrnwy being well worth a visit. The latter offers bird-watching, a sculpture trail of works from international artists, as well as an opportunity to discover some of the myths and legends of the local area.
The property is also ideally located for wildlife and coarse fishing enthusiasts.

Guilsfield

Most outdoor activities are available within a short driving distance from Guilsfield, such as hiking (Rodney's Pillar is a particularly rewarding walk), cycling, pony-trekking, fishing and golf. Tennis courts can be found in Guilsfield village and water sports are available at Lake Vyrnwy and Bala Lake.

For pleasant walks you don't even need to get in the car, as there are plenty of Woodland Trust footpaths around Gaerfawr to explore, which take you to the site of a Iron Age settlement. After an afternoon in the fresh air you might want to unwind in the beer gardens of one of our two village pubs, one of which has a children's' play area. Both are within easy walking distance of the property, so there's no need to worry about drinking and driving.

Stag groups might want to have a go at paint-balling, shooting, or go-karting, and for hen-parties there are some lovely health-spas in the area such as the Coach House in Oswestry, and the Wild Pheasant in Llangollen. In terms of nightlife, Shrewsbury offers a great choice of wine bars and night clubs. Or for something really special, why not go for a hot-air balloon ride?

For horse racing enthusiasts or those who enjoy the odd flutter, there is summer flat racing at the Riverside Racecourse in Chester, whilst for National Hunt fans, we are handy for Bangor-On-Dee and Ludlow. We are also a stone's throw from the beautiful landscape of the Meres and Mosses of North Shropshire, of which Ellesmere is perhaps the best known site.

In Welshpool, you can visit the fabulous interiors and gardens of National Trust property Powis Castle, which also holds outdoor theatre in the summer months. The town also offers a traditional steam railway with trips through the charming countryside to the town of Llanfair Caereinion, and regular rail links to the Ceridigion and Cambrian coast. There is also the Flash leisure centre in town with a flume, jacuzzi, children's' swimming area, and play areas, as well a variety of racket sports and gym facilities on offer.

For lovers of the performing arts, Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn overlooking the river has recently opened with a packed programme of opera, musicals, theatre, and comedy. The Flower Show in August is also a highlight, offering music, entertainment, exhibitions, arena events, and an impressive fireworks display. Top artists such as Jools Holland visit the town for outdoor concerts in the summer months.

“A fantasic holiday house in need of tender loving care from the owners.”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2011

What a fantastic house for a large group of people,we were a party of 12 Owners had thoughtfully left wine, cookies and flowers for us. However after half an hour of looking we could not find the 7 bathrooms mentioned on the web site. There are in fact two on-suites one with a shower cubicle the other a fab room with rolltop bath. otherwise a family bathroom on the top floor and two small toilets with hand basins. The house is well stocked with glasses, cutlery china and saucepans. several of the roasting pans were well past their best. with the exception of the cutlery, glasses and crockery anything had to be washed before we could use it. We had a problem with the lack of sharp knives but the owner did quickly bring us another when this was mentioned. The toaster had only two of the four slots working. The kettle leaked all over the worktops.great to have two fridge freezers but the newest one in the kitchen , the drinks dispencer was full of black mould. Really good to have two washing machines in the utility room, with an airer. The addition of a pool table was a godsend and gave our grand children many hours of fun. Which was just as well because the television downstairs did not work nor did the DVD player upstairs. Our planned evening watching a film as a treat did not happen. We noticed the upstairs lounge had some games so decided to play these instead, sadly none of them were complete so this was not possible. We never did find the hairdryer but thankfully two of our party had got one with them. Some of the matresses were not good, we had to change the top bunk one for a single bed one to enable the grand daughter to be able to sleep and one of the double matresses on the top floor was so uncomfortable we padded it with a duvet. Whilst we realise there is not much time in the turn around between guests, we felt the house was in need of a good deep clean. many of the shelves and cupboards were full of other peoples rubbish, a shelf in the kitchen near the rayburn had many jars of out of date foods that should have thrown before we arrived. However we had a great week its a good area to visit, lots of good walks great National Trust houses amongst other things. With a lot of tidying and tender loving care this would be just the most fantastic holiday let.
