Speedwell Barn, a cosy self catering barn conversion to the rear of Speedwell House Bed & Breakfast, dates back to the 1800’s. It is just a minutes walk in to the centre of the village where you will find the 6 pubs, restaurant and tea rooms. Today, Speedwell Barn has been transformed into a unique and comfortable self catering accommodation in Castleton. Surrounded by beautiful views, Speedwell Barn is the perfect location to base yourself whilst exploring the Peak District being just 2 minutes walk from the village centre and with views of Peveril Castle, Mam Tor and Lose Hill just outside the front door.
We have ensured that the design of Speedwell Barn has been sensitive to the original structure. This includes making use of the artefacts found during the actual renovation.
As well as ensure that the design is sympathetic to Speedwell Barns history, we have also endeavoured to take all of the aspects of Speedwell House Bed and Breakfast guests have loved and enhanced them to create a luxurious self catering experience. This includes many of today’s modern comforts and facilities including HD Catch Up TV, dishwasher, a lovely large shower and all the kitchen facilities you may need.
Furthermore, we are happy to say that unlike the Bed and Breakfast, both Speedwell Barn and Stable are dog-friendly! Therefore, both self catering accommodations are perfect for all the family, including the four-legged variety.
Speedwell Barn has two floors. It features a mezzanine bedroom with handmade bed and en-suite cloakroom. It also has a bathroom/shower room on the ground floor.
The mezanine bedroom, which is accessed via a spiral staircase, is stylishly furnished with bespoke handmade furniture to maximise the space and storage for guests. Thanks to the two roof Velux window, it also makes a great place for guests to stargaze at night .
On the ground floor, Speedwell Barn is equipped with everything you would expect in a self catering living space. This includes a double corner sofa bed, kitchen area, HD catch up TV, storage space and breakfast bar.
The shower room is located on the ground floor with a large shower. It also features a copper-topped handmade sink unit and toilet.
All the internal doors within the Barn have been made from the reclaimed floor of an old Mill in Derby. The breakfast bar in Speedwell Barn is individually designed to complement the reclaimed timber doors and is made from locally sourced reclaimed timber and features storage. The breakfast bar is close to the barn door so you can just open half of the door to let in the fresh air whilst dining.
Although Speedwell Barn contains everything you would expect from self catering accommodation, it also features some more unique fittings. Speedwell Barn is the home of “The Throne of Games”. This is a family heirloom that has been passed down and re-invented to store handmade games that guests can use.
The Barn also features a floating storage cabinet. It has been handmade to showcases a vintage sign that was found during renovation.
Speedwell Barn features stone floors throughout the main living space, so maybe bring something to keep your toes warm, especially in winter.
We’re very lucky to be so close to Castleton and many different attractions. Castleton has 6 fantastic pubs, an excellent restaurant and a number of cafés and tea rooms. If you didn’t fancy cooking (although all the utensils and appliances are there) you really don’t have to!
