The Crete region

Majestic snowcapped mountains with unique caves, fertile plateaus and canyons leading to secret beaches, small valleys with lush green olive groves, hills with castles and whitewashed chapels hanging on the cliffs, dense forests and arid shrublands with thymes, lakes and rivers with waterfalls, secluded villages and cosmopolitan cities, countless archaeological and historic sites and modern resorts ... all these make up the island of contrasts and myths, Crete

Crete is the biggest island of Greece and one of the most popular European tourist destinations. The population is almost 700,000 people and the biggest city is Heraklion with 200,000 people. It lies between the three continents of Africa, Asia and Europe.

This is the birthplace of the first advanced European civilization, the Minoan, which flourished over 4000 years ago. Three palaces and many monuments are still offering stunning views of that era. Worth to mention that Crete is the birthplace of Zeus, who according to the mythology, kidnapped his mistress Europe and brought her to Crete to give birth to his son Minos, the king of the Minoan civilization.

Crete is mountainous, and its character is defined by a high mountain range crossing from west to east. The Idi Range (Psiloritis) is the highest (2,456 m). These mountains lavished Crete with valleys, such as Amari valley, fertile plateaus, such as Lasithi plateau, Omalos and Nidha; caves, such as Diktaion and Idaion (the birthplace of the ancient Greek god Zeus); and a number of gorges such as the Samari√° Gorge (the biggest in Europe, 16km), Imbros Gorge, Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Ha Gorge, Platania gorge, the Gorge of the Dead. Hence, it offers a fantastic variety of lanscapes including snow-capped mountains, rolling hills covered with olive trees and of course 1,046 km of coastline.

Crete with its 300 days of sunshine per year, has one of the healthiest climates in Europe. The island straddles two climatic zones, the Mediterranean and the North African. Spring and autumn temperatures reach the high 20s (Celsius) and in the heart of summer temperatures can reach into the high 30s (Celsius). The rainy season is predominately in the winter months and it is not uncommon for Crete to have no rain between the months of May and September.

Rethymno

Rethymno is Crete's third largest town with almost 40,000 inhabitants, conveniently placed in the middle of the north coast between Heraklion and Chania, making it an ideal base to explore the island, just a forty minute drive to the south coast, where you can find some of the greatest beaches in Greece, like Aghios Pavlos, Preveli, Amoudi and Ligres.

Rethymno boasts having the largest Venetian fortress (Fortezza 16th century) on the island, a magnificent old port and countless beautiful buildings in the old town. It is a colourful mix of architectural influences from the Renaissance until the early 20th century. .

An evening stroll through the old town's narrow lanes will be an unforgettable experience. You can also relax in your comfortable chairs and feel the breeze of this historic city from the balcony of the apartment.

The inhabitants are courteous and hospitable. Various religious festivals are celebrated in the nearby villages, along with the famous Renaissance festival of Rethymno during summer!
