“Great villa, excellent location, perfect holiday.” Villa Estia was perfect for our party of 4 adults, 2 teenage boys and 2 young girls.
The drive from Heraklion was straightforward and takes around 2 hours at a steady pace.
An arrival at the villa we were pleasantly surprised at its location and the surrounding areas. It's situated far enough away from the other villas to be private but close enough to all the local amenities.
The villa itself was clean and moden. Downstairs was big enough for larger party than ours and had a TV, DVD, Wii and stereo with iPhone plug-in, all very good for keeping the kids entertained.
The kitchen was very well appointed and the excellent BBQ area made cooking very easy.
The 2 double bedrooms upstairs were very nice, light and airy with plenty of wardrobe and draw space. The master en-suit was very nice.
The 2 other bedrooms were more than adequate for the kids as well.
Air conditioning throughout was a welcome relief from the heat during the day and adjusted during the night for a perfect sleep.
The pool area was a big hit...the pool was a good size surrounded by excellent furniture, sun loungers, comfy outdoor sofas and chairs aplenty. The dining table was a great feature and used regularly for eating alfresco.
Situated only a short drive to the local town there are numerous shops, small supermarkets and restaurants but nothing too overwhelming. The is also a good selection of beaches within easy reach, again by car. About a 45 min drive in either direction are the larger towns of Ierapetra and Sitia, both worth a visit for eating out and shopping. They also have larger supermarkets with a better selection and cheaper prices.
We tried a few of the local restaurants suggested in the visitor guide folder at the villa and found them all very good, especially Dragons Cave, only a short drive from the villa and with great food and fews of the bay and mountains.
All-in-all we had a fantastic holiday, the villa was perfect, the area was just right...enough to do without but away from the busy tourist areas.
We would definitely recommend this property to friends, family and fellow travellers.
Sunny and beautiful, Crete is one of Greece's largest and most stunning islands. With a vast and varied landscape, there's plenty of natural beauty to explore and more than enough activities on offer to please the entire family. Why not book your next holiday rental in Crete and start exploring?
There are many cities to explore, each with its own charms. Whether you're seeking sunny beaches, rugged countryside, rolling mountains or bustling cities, there's a region for you. Or if you just can't choose, the excellent infrastructure makes it easy to travel between all the different environments.
From historic towns to quaint fishing villages, wild party resorts to sun-drenched sands, there's more than enough to keep the whole family happy here.
What to Do
Fitness fans looking for adventure will enjoy the challenge of hiking through the gorge in the stunning Samaria National Park.
The young and the reckless will love Malia, the island’s party capital. Renowned worldwide as a hotspot for visitors looking to really let loose and party, most clubs here are open until sunrise. For something a little more chilled out, do as the locals do and have a drink at a kafeneion, a cafe/bar that's at the heart of typical Greek life.
Top Crete Travel Tips
Whilst smoking generally isn't allowed indoors, this is pretty much ignored in most establishments all over the island. You'll often find people smoking inside restaurants and bars, so be aware. Try and get a table outside if you don’t want to be surrounded by smoke.
For an action-packed family vacation with plenty of attractions for all ages, be sure to book your next holiday rental in Crete.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay st villa Francesca. Lisa responded quickly to any queries/problems, such as the air conditioning stopped working. She called the engineers straight away. BBQ was a bit of a let down as I expected it to be larger and gas. So we didn’t use it, which is a shame.
A car is definitely an essential as the villa is up a very steep and fairly remote part of a mountain on unnamed roads, sat nav & google maps were very useful. …
Elegant ALOE VILLA, pool, sea view, near restaurants, shops, beaches, Rethymno.
Heavenly Aloe Villa
Family with one teenage Daughter, our first time in Crete, and we stayed at the beautiful Villa Aloe in Prines.
The villa, pool, and gardens are immaculately kept. An amazing roof terrace, just right for starlit nights.
Everything you could need is provided for in the Villa.
Thei the owner is a very welcoming Lady, and we found everyone in the village to be helpful.
Veranta, and Giannis Restaurants both serve excellent food, with great surroundings, and warm welcome.
Mini market is very good for your basic needs too, and again very helpful staff.
We loved it. …
We stayed as a family of four, and found the villa spacious and well equipped, with extensive grounds and a pool area that ticked every box. Air conditioned rooms with mosquito nets meant comfortable nights sleep was assured.
You definitely need a car, as the rural location means that even the local village of Kokkino Chorio(KC) is a very sweaty hike in 30 degree temperatures. KC local taverna is basic but with plenty of traditional charm. KC mini-market is well stocked, with another 2 options only 5mins away in Plakka.
The little cove outside KC is really a diving and snorkling cove, and whilst beautiful, doesnt meat the brief of a beach, especially for kids. The beach 15mins away at Alymarida, certainly is kid friendly, with shallow sand and warm clear waters (an not too touristy).
The fish restaurant mentioned in the villa book, left after Drapanos, is a must visit, amazing location on a blue water cove and fish straight out of the sea.
Would definitely recommend this villa for a relaxing stay.
Only one negative for us. The villa has two amazing terraces with views to die for, and two lovely outside dining areas, all of which were rendered useless by the volume of wasps. Any amount of food taken outside and you are inundated to the point of retreat ( quite a few also make their way into the villa during meal times if any door or window is open). It must be a country location thing, as we are now staying in Almyrida and there are pretty much none here, and eating outside is easy. Drinks outside were ok, but food was a no-go, which was disappointing given the amazing location, views, and facilities for alfresco dining. …
AMARANDOS VILLA WITH ORGANIC POOL: Last minute offer!
Lovely house suited our big family perfectly
We stayed for nine days with our extended family of nine at Amarandos and enjoyed it very much. Rythymnon is a mere bus drive away (and the buses in Crete are fab - the bus stations are clean, the staff friendly and the buses on time). The house is a short car drive from Rythymnon. There are good views and the house was clean and had everything we required. The pool was very much enjoyed by six children as well as the adults. We tried out two of the tavernas (Mylonas and alondis?) Both had good views and we had nice meals.
We also went to Knossos, the inland lake kournas and a winery nearby, Bali beach and a beach on the way to georgapoli amoung other things.
Thanks to Erini and family and the manager, Emmanuel and wife for the friendly welcome and assistance. …
Beech Grove Apartment
Great Holiday location in a relaxed rural setting
The apartment is well equipped and has more clothes hanging/drawer space than any hotel we have stayed in. It formed an ideal base for touring the East of Crete which can only be done in a car at a gentle pace once you leave the main roads! The neighbors upstairs were friendly and helpful as to where to go and how to get there.
We were so relaxed that our typical day started out at 11am - and we will be back for more.
Many Thanks John -- from Derek & Jenny …
