The Crete region
A walk in the island of Crete is a scent of spring flowers growing in the yards of the houses. Generations of Minoan, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Turkish, Jewish and Egyptian people lived here.
History is alive in Crete, breathing through the bow strokes of the lyra and the violin, the sound of the lute and the bagpipe. Finally, it is the tastes of a history of eastern spices, unique greens and herbs, blessed oil and wine. Here, in these cultural crossroads, a lot of memories are alive and a large number of elements of other cultures still form a part of the everydayness of the Cretan people.
The total area of Crete is 8.336 sq.Km. It is located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea and it has a remarkable coastline of more than 1000 Km. It is bordered by the Cretan Sea to the north and the Lybian Sea to the South. It is surrounded by a number of small islands (Gavdow, Gavdopoula, Chrysi, Koufonisi, Dia, Dyonisades etc.). The length of the island from one edge (west) to the other (east) is 256 Km. The percentage of mountainous area is 49%. The predominant mountain ranges are the Lefka Ori (2.452m), Philoritis (2.456m) and Dikti (2148m).
Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and there are many jewels just waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous explorers of holiday treasures. Its exquisite coastline is dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. Crete with its nearby islands form the Crete Region which is based at Heraklion and is divided into four regional units. From west to east these are: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi.
Welcome to the city of Rethymnon, a place blessed with beauty, embraced by breathtaking mountains and the deep blue of the Mediterranean, decorated with renaissance colors and inhabited by people known for their hospitality, honoring their ancestors and traditions. It is a place one falls in love at first sight and visitors are able to feel the positive vibes of the city from the very first moment, making them feel at home.
The city of Rethymno is an ideal tourist destination for visitors who wish to explore the rich cultural heritage and the natural beauties of Crete. This well-organized city offers to visitors a variety of picturesque routes to follow and numerous historical monuments to visit. The old city of Rethymno still preserves its old urban structure to a great extend, formed during the Venetian period and later reformed during the Turkish occupation.
The beautiful city of Rethymno is standing on the site where ancient Rithymna used to be, as archaeological excavations of the late Neolithic period (3500- 2800 BC) proved. It is the gate way between Chania and Heraklion. Full of rich history, ancient sites, magnificent sandy beaches, Byzantine churches, lovely villages & lively resorts. Rethymno combines an old- time aristocratic appearance with a modern aspect, a blend which is creating a unique atmosphere.
In Rethymno you can enjoy the breathtaking sight of an endless sandy beach that meets on one side the blue see and on the other the enchanting view of the city. For all the time Winter and summer! The beach of Rethymno is 12 km long, it starts from the historical city center and extends to the Eastern part of the isle reaching Scaleta. Rethymno beach has fine-grained brilliant light brown sand where you can walk barefoot and feel how soft and beautiful it is. There's nothing more rejuvenating than kicking off your shoes to sink your toes into powdery-golden, squeaky-clean beach sand.
There are many great attractions nearby, including Rethimno's old town, the Venetian Fortezza, the Venetian harbour, the Loggia, the Rimondi Fountain, Saint Franciscus Church, the Neratzies mosque, the famous Sacred Monastery of Arcadi, the Village of Margarites and the Village of Eleftherna. The beaches of Preveli, Triopetra, Ligres, Agios Pavlos, Damnoni, Ammoudi and Rodakino are of exceptional beauty (southern part of the prefecture of Rethimno). In addition, the small towns of Plakias and Agia Galini are worth visiting and there are many beautiful beaches around.
