The Algarve region
The Algarve with its famous pristine beaches and micro climate offers the best year round holiday opportunities for the discerning holidaymaker. Quaint fishing ports and historic cities and villages compete for the tourists attention. Secure family beaches and the west coasts wild surfing beaches offer a broad variety of scenery and seaside activities.
Over 300 sunny days every year make the Algarve, Europes favourite holiday destination. The Serra De Monchique is the Algarve's best kept secret, founded by the Romans which provides a historic backdrop and its natural spring waters are said to rejuvenate and even lengthen our days!
Talking about Romans, it was the Romans that built the stone terraces in Villa Vida Nova's gardens. They were built to retain the excellent soil for growing vegetables and fruit to feed the Centurians and troops, these days the terraces are still there but it's not the Romans getting fat on all that fruit..................
The Picturesque Town of Monchique
The delightful town of Monchique, which is only 2 minutes drive from the villa, has a pretty central square with street cafes in which to while away the time and people watch. There are beautiful gardens to admire and narrow historic streets to explore. By the way, parking is free everywhere in Monchique including the underground car park! There are several supermarkets for you to stock up on supplies, 3 butchers, numerous cafés and a tea room serving delicious home made food, two banks with cash points, two petrol stations, 2 chemists, wine shop, gift shops and newsagents selling foreign papers. Recently opened is the new Intermarche supermarket mall, with a selection of shops, plenty of parking and ideal to stock up your holiday provisions.
Superb Dining for all Tastes and Budgets
There are many excellent yet inexpensive local restaurants, some of the best are within walking distance of the villa. You will be tempted by the delicious regional fare, chicken piri-piri, black Iberian pork, wild boar with plums, lamb casserole, chicken with cherries, pork and prawn cataplana, stuffed squid, grilled fish, local cured ham and smoked sausage, honey and marzipan sweets just to name a few, all are locally produced. There is an amazing sellection of wines and ports to enhance your dining experience, don't forget to try the local firewater Medronho, and for the ladies, Melosa, served from a glass slipper! (You have to search for the slipper!)
The Serra da Monchique
Monchique is nestled in a valley between the only two mountains in the Algarve, Foia and Picota. The Romans who established Monchique , as mentioned above they built, with precision granite terraces all over the Serra de Monchique, you will see them everywhere. Villa Vida Nova nestles in "Corga das Ervilhas" - Terraces of Peas! Corga is an ancient word not used these days and means "Terraces". Our terraces still produce, oranges, tangerines, lemons, plums, peaches, figs, sharon fruit, grapes, olives, cherries of which our guests are welcome to eat. We have also found, various stone hand tools, a bone needle, a bronze spur, a bronze buckle and slate buttons.
There are level walks, steep walks, walks to the top of Foia and walks to the cafes in town. Bird watching is very popular as we are on a major migratory route. Cork oak forests abound and offer welcome shade from the hot summer sun, and after all that exercise kick off your shoes and cool off in the infinity pool. Wind down with a glass of local wine or ice cold beer or test your culinary skills on the BBQ.
From the villa there are many attractions within a short drive. The peaks and contour roads of Foia and Picota afford 360 degree panoramic views, don't forget your camera! For the more adventurous, take some of the side roads and visit deserted watermills or the ghost village of Barbelote with its stunning cascade. The mountains here are quite spectacular and not to be missed ideal for the biker, hiker or just a casual stroll.
Local Spas and Wellness Centre.
The famous village of Caldas de Monchique with its health spa and wellness center is only 10 minutes drive away here you can take in the famous Monchique spring waters and enjoy being pampered in the health salons at either Hotel Termas de Monchique or Longevity Wellness Centre. In summer in the evening, you can listen to local live music whilst dining in the Caldas de Monchique square at Restaurant 1692.
A Short Drive Away.
There are several golf courses, the nearest just 15 minutes drive away, and the new Autodromo do Algarve, F1 designed race track, features various motorsport events and track days and if you are up to it, a stunning go kart track open to the public. The busier tourist areas of the south coast and the town of Portimao with shopping malls, night life, sardine restaurants, sandy beaches and marina is just 25 minutes away. Take a boat trip from Portimao or Lagos to watch the dolphins in their natural habitat.
Shopping in Nearby Portimao.
Portimao has now surpassed Faro to become the shopping mecca of the Algarve and is just 20 minutes drive from Monchique. Boasting the largest shopping mall on the Algarve, Aqua Portimao is situated just 20 minutes drive from Monchique, on three floors with 117 shops, restaurants and a hypermarket, again parking is free. There is an excellent choice including many big names such as Primark, H & M, Zara, Foot Locker, Mango, Massimo Dutti and much more. It is open daily from 0900 to 2400. There are also numerous other supermarkets in Portimao such as Lidl and Aldi plus Aqua Portimao a retail centre with C & A, Sport Zone, Guimaraes shoes and Casa homeware.
Here you can safely "Shop until you drop"!

"Perfect quiet retreat, idyllic."
This was our first trip to the Algarve and what a perfect introduction. We travelled with our 3 children ages 8, 6 and 4 and this house was ideal. There is nothing misleading in the photo's, it really is that beautiful. The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. The pool is just wonderful, although we experienced slightly odd weather during the middle of our stay that meant the pool was a bit nippy. The house was cosy on dull days though and we didn't mind one bit heading back some days to spend time indoors. There were lots of lovely little areas also for the children to explore, they loved the lemon trees and the fish pond. We spent an afternoon in Monchique, found some great places for coffee in the square. The Panorama restaurant on the way into Monchique was great, really nice pizza's and salads at very good prices. We can also recommend Bica Boca which served really authentic homemade meals (the owner had a fire on the go as well which went down well!) The local supermarket is reasonably priced and stocked with all the essentials. We had no problems with language either, our pigeon Portuguese was well received but everyone is very helpful. The little local custard tarts are a must. My husband has been living on them, but they are considerably cheaper in the remoter areas (15 cents each in Monchique compared to 1 euro!)
All in all, a wonderful holiday and I must say everyone has been very envious of our holiday photo's! Thanks again Nigel.

"Wonderfully appointed villa in a beautiful location"
We had a really wonderful stay at this villa, the owners have really thought about what is needed by their guests and they succeed in providing their guests with a real home from home with a stunning view.

"Fantastic villa & a great location"
The villa is 100% as per the brochure and is a real credit to the owners. Equipped and decorated to a very high standard with a kitchen fully kitted out in every respect. The design and layout is not only aesthetic, but is really practical and comfortable when it comes to privacy and being able to relax.
The town of Monchique is an excellent pivot to venture West or South with both coast lines only 30 minutes drive, but at the same time a safe distance from the hustle of the tourist hot spots. As with anywhere being off the tourist track you do need a car though there are a few low key local attractions. There are cheap rentals in Faro, but if you go BA take advantage of the Avis partnership - eg, Renault Megane for less than 16 pound a day. You don't even need the electronic toll tracker (2 euros per day) and next time we would just drive from Lisbon on the IC roads by-passing most of the tolls.
There are 3 top class restaurants within walking distance, and on a dull day (not many of those) you might well fancy a walk into the centre (20-25 mins). Head on up through the back streets to the convent, which looks down on Monchique.
Everywhere has a local market for fish and veg, but the best we saw was in Aljezur on the way to the great beeches on the west. It depends on the sea, but the day we went we hadn't seen the variety of seafood anywhere else. Odeceixe has a great restaurant just a short distance up the coast from Aljezur in the town. Look out for the 'gypsy'market as there are bargains galore.
And finally, the weather. First 2 weeks in April and it was hot with a light cooling breeze most of the time. We want to keep finding new places to visit, but it will be very hard not to return. The climate and the accommodation is a combination that is really second to none.

"Mochique's best kept secret ..."
We had such a wonderfully comfortable stay at Villa Vida Nova last week - part of me feels crazy actually giving a review … as i'd like to keep our find a secret only to be shared with a select few.
When we arrived, it was in fact unusually chilly and wet (for the time of year). We contacted the villa manager to ask if we could turn on the heating - there are air con/heater units everywhere but we needed a boost! Within 15 minutes, we received an email from Nigel the owner with detailed instructions of how to switch everything on … we were toasty in no time! :-) … excellent service, thanks again Nigel.
The villa is extremely well appointed and has everything you could want for on a self-catering holiday - even the orange trees were 'full' and the kids enjoyed making fresh juice every morning. The local supermarket is 5 mins drive away and is well stocked. Ercilia, the maid, arrived mid way through our stay with fresh towels and linen - she was lovely! We used our vouchers at the 'famous' Spa and enjoyed an afternoon of indulgence and discounted massages - i'd recommend a visit.
The views from the villa are sensational, the pool was a good size although too cold for us to use at that time of year - it didn't stop the kids having a 'very quick dip' - just so they could say they had!
All in all - a super week … the only downside - it's booked up already for when we are back in the summer!

"Beautiful views & accommodation"
We have just returned home from a great holiday at this villa, fantastic views, lovely clean rooms, spotlessly clean pool. A car is a necessity in our opinion we went to the coast most days & had some delicious meals, O Luar at the top of the hill in Monchique was very good. We would have loved to have stayed longer & we will return.
A fantastic holiday had by all.

The villa was beautiful and the view a constant delight. There are however, a few things that we thought you should know:1) We did not expect such steep, windy roads and hills around the villa from th… More
Thank you for your comments and suggestions this gives us the opportunity to improve our facilities for the satisfaction and benefit of all our clients. Whilst there are some valid points and suggestions I feel your rating and many of the complaints are unjustified and stem from inadequate research, disregarding advice, wrong choices and failure to read the villa directory.
Our Villa is situated in the mountains of the Algarve, this is clear and attested to by the many photographs, descriptions, videos, maps and Google Earth on our websites. By its very nature, the roads and walks are far from flat and this is what is appealing to visitors to the area. I think you missed the opportunity to research the area more thoroughly, the information and links to other websites about Monchique are all there to help you make an informed choice.
On our own website, on the page "Rates and Availability" -> "General" -> "You Need To Know", it states "Car Recommended"! You even asked me to investigate deals on car rental for you and so I spent time searching cheap rentals and sent you many emails and links on both Lisbon and Faro deals for your "6 ladies of a certain age", as you called yourselves. As requested, I also sent you information about day trips from the villa by car. I am truly surprised to learn now that you decided against a car! I think this was a bad choice on your part, especially as you now say that one of your party has bad knees. You are probably the only clients ever to stay at our villa without a rental car. At no time did you ever mention that you had changed your mind about renting a car, and you had opportunity when I sent you vouchers for the Spa, payment reminder, your key code, etc. if you had, I would have advised you accordingly.
The divan beds in the "twin bed suite" are not narrow they are Standard English single bed sizes 190cm x 90cm and there are certainly no springs sticking through nor have we had any other complaints about them, I do agree that the bases are 5 inches lower than the bases of beds in the other rooms and the mattresses may be on the soft side, so to avoid any doubt we have replaced them for the 2014 season, again with Standard English sizes 190cm x 90cm but with bases equal in height to the others. Hopefully these new beds will be able to sustain the most portly of clients. It is important to note that we only use imported “English beds” (and Linen), because “Portuguese” beds tend to be smaller, much harder, and therefore less suitable.
Unfortunately in any villa all bedrooms will not be exactly equal and certainly our twin bedroom is not as spacious and has a smaller bathroom than the other 2 however it has a Standard 80cm x 80cm shower and cannot be regarded as inadequate or tiny. The suite itself is 19m2 overall which is well above average for a twin. I am sorry if two of your party were disappointed by having the smaller room of the three, the photographs of the rooms on our website clearly depict this, as organizer it was up to you to ensure all your party understood this.
The midweek visit by our cleaner is normally welcomed by our guests, she simply needs to replace towels and have a clean around which takes about an hour or so. Most guests, if at the villa, retire to the pool area or lounge and it does not need special planning or consideration.
We haven't ever needed to supply 6 umbrellas, or one per guest, 2 or 3 usually suffice because guests tend to share them or use the covered terrace for shade. However, as you discovered, extras were just a phone call away, you could have asked for 6 at that time. When using the umbrellas it is necessary to secure them properly in their concrete bases by tightening the collar on the base otherwise they will tend to blow away, of course umbrellas should not be used in windy conditions for that reason. The correct and safe use of the umbrellas is described in the villa directory.
Concerning umbrellas, swing chairs, and for that matter garden furniture and even ornaments do get broken and they are replaced but may not be exact copies of previous ones. The linen was previously Marks and Spencer, we try to supply only the best, for 2014 you will find we are also experimenting with “Yorkshire Linen”.
The Algarve has a Mediterranean climate and, naturally, ants will be outside the villa, this is expected. If garbage is not removed daily to the public bins at the end of the road then ants can appear inside. This is also explained in the villa directory. Without a car then daily removal of garbage would have been difficult, hence the ants.
The battery holder in the safe had a loose connection and the previous clients son had removed the antenna cable from the back of the TV to play with his game machine and had not replaced it, for this I apologise, but as you said, our manager dealt with this quickly and efficiently. The only reason why the main board will trip is by having every air conditioning unit running at full together with too many other appliances, a simple overload of the system, the correct use of air-conditioning is explained in the villa directory and the main board is simple to reset.
Our cleaner has been with us for 12 years and receives only praise, this is the first complaint we have ever had about her or her work. She recalls arriving at 8.30 am and after a while realised that no-one was awake. Usually, on departure day, guests are long up and about at this time, packing, breakfasting and disposing of garbage. Experience has it that guests still sleeping at this time will not be able to vacate by the required 10.00 am and a little use of the Hoover is a practical and less intrusive way of arousing oversleeping guests. She also recalls helping you to look for the villa key that you had lost. She told our manager that after getting up your party proceeded to lounge at the pool and made no indication of being in a position, or having any intention, to vacate the villa by 10.00 am. Unfortunately not being able to understand her Portuguese left you with the idea that you were being told off, when in reality she was only trying tactfully to motivate you on your way. Moreover when you did eventually vacate the villa you left dirty dishes, garbage and a large quantity of empty bottles, again the villa directory explains this is your responsibility and not to be left for cleaning staff, it also explains that the villa has to be vacated by 10.00 am to allow adequate time for cleaning and preparing the villa for the next guests, this is only fair.
You had my personal email contact and the telephone number of our manager yet during your stay you never contacted me at all about any of these problems and only contacted our manager about the umbrellas, safe and TV. You had the opportunity but never mentioned any of the other problems that you now complain about, again the villa directory specifically asks guests to report problems immediately so that we can take action.
There is no room for complacency and we take complaints, very seriously. We are almost fully booked for the 2014 season already and it is only January, the majority of these bookings are repeat or recommended business, this fact coupled with the many complimentary reviews that we have received, and are published, speaks for it self.

"Modern, Bright, Great Views."
The villa is well maintained with beautiful views, it is a fantastic location nestled in the Monchique mountains which is close to ammenities but far enough away from the tourist areas to enjoy the real Portugal.
