The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
At the southwest corner of the Turkish coast lies one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of the Mediterranean sometimes known as The Turkish Riviera and deservedly so with crystal clear waters lapping the Lycian coast and the majestic Taurus mountains as a backdrop. The climate is beautiful from April through to November, during the day, Kalkan is almost disarmingly laid-back magical surroundings, a dash of relaxed sophistication and a seemingly limitless variety of places to explore make Kalkan irresistible.
The restaurants in Kalkan offer an exceptionally high standard of food and service (some of the best prepared and freshest food weâ??ve tasted on our worldwide travels), many restaurants have romantic roof terraces looking out over Kalkan and others are so low-key that many visitors never notice them. Eating out is excellent value and the Turkish wines are surprisingly nice.
The pretty cobbled streets of the old town are an Aladdin's cave with an abundance of shops, selling clothes, jewellery, handbags, gifts etc. There is also a weekly market on a Thursday and a local supermarket in Kisla which, if the short walk is too much to energy to expel, will deliver your provisions including delicious freshly baked bread to your door.
If you want to holiday in a sleepy fishing village where you wonâ??t find any noisy discos, big hotels or loud traffic Kalkan is the place for you.
There is more to this region than the fantastic views which abound places of interest, particularly if you like visiting ancient sites such as Patara, Kas, Tlos, Letoon and Xanthos which are all fairly nearby and can be reached by private car or taxi. Alternatively a day at Saklikent Gorge walking through icy waters to cool down in midsummer is always a treat and the scenery en-route is beautiful.
Villa Beluga has a local mini-market which, if the short 5 minute walk is too arduous to contemplate, the owners will quite hapilly deliver your provisions, including their delicious fresh baked bread, right to the door. At the end of the road less than 2 minutes walk a bus route passes by, the mini-bus runs on a regular time-table and will take you into the centre of Kalkan in less than 5 minutes, no bus stop is required as you hale one like a taxi.
A short walk you will be able to take advantage of facilities at the nearby Patara Prince. These include: water sports, volleyball, tennis courts, snooker and scuba diving they also have a health club with sauna, massage and other spa treatments available. If you have children you may be interested in the kids club too.
Down the hill towards Kisla is a local Turkish kitchen, highly recommended if you want to try some authentic Turkish cuisine plus they will deliver piping hot dishes to your door.
