The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Kalkan, described as Turkeys best kept secret, is a small, sophisticated resort set on the Turkish Mediterranean Riviera.

A Sunday Times article likened visitors to Kalkan to those attracted to Tuscany and the Dordogne, we agree entirely, Kalkan is for the discerning holiday maker.

Hire a car or join a local excursion to visit one of the many historical ancient sites such as Patara, Xanthos, Tios, a trip to the Taurus mountains or the amazing Saklikent Gorge.

Kalkan

The town nestles on the foot of the Taurus mountains and was once a small fishing village, it is now a charming holiday resort consisting of cobbled streets, housing interesting shops selling jewellery, carpets and local goods. One can enjoy bartering with the shopkeepers and their hospitality offering of apple tea.

Enjoy a beer at the bars on the picturesque harbour, admire the gullets, the fishing and sailing boats, or hire for the day your privately skippered boat and be taken to the coves for a swim in the turquoise sea, sunbathe, enjoy the food, all at unbelievable value.

Visit the small pebbled beach close by the harbour or the local beach clubs and enjoy the water sports available, such as snorkeling, scuba diving and wind surfing.

Enjoy mountain walks, climbing, trekking, caving and parascending, have a relaxing Turkish bath or massage to ease away the aches and pains.

In the evening sample some of the finest food at the harbour side restaurants or those with roof top terraces offering views of Kalkans wonderful illuminated nightlife.

Patara Beach, an 18 kilometre-long strip of sand, bordered on its ends by mountains, should not be missed with its gorgeous landscape and great swimming. It is a national park and home to many birds, also the breeding ground of the endangered Loggerhead turtle, and is acknowledged as one of the best beaches in Turkey.

Kaputas, seven kilometres from Kalkan, along the most beautiful coastal road to Ka? is the most striking gorge. Plaques on the bridge commemorate the deaths of the workers killed during the road construction. Accessible by 120 very steep steps nestles the most perfect sandy shingle cove and beach. Close by, the Blue Cove is marked by a road sign, but simply look for a small gathering of yachts admiring the spectacle.

Ka?, a twenty seven kilometre drive from Kalkan along the wonderful coastal road, is a pleasant working town surrounded on three sides by the mountains. Life centres around the harbour and town square with the usual tea houses, bars, restaurants and shops. Shops on the main street serve the local community, however the charm still remains and it is a pleasure to wander the cobbled streets, checking the shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, leather goods, clothing and silver and gold items.

Little is left of the ancient Antiphellus, which Ka? was named in the fourth century BC, however the well-preserved and restored Lycian theatre and the several tombs hewn out of the sheer mountain are illuminated at night. In the town is the Lycian Sarcophagus, the Monument Tomb.

Local harbour boatmen will take you to fascinating bays and coves where the swimming and diving are excellent in the clear water, or to admire the luxury villas on the peninsula.

A popular boat tour from Ka? is to the Kalekoy, the sunken city, submerged in the Mediterranean Sea, and Ucagis, an idyllic setting on a bay amid islands and having a number of Lycian tombs and a sarcophagus the shape of a house.

Saklikent Gorge, 18 kilometres long and cut deep into the Akdalglar mountains, is the deepest in Turkey. It is best visited on a late hot summers day, as the water is not quite as cold and deep, making the paddle more enjoyable. Have a beer, snack or freshly caught trout at the waterside raft restaurants and bars, decked out with Turkish rugs and cushions, and shaded by fig trees. An adventure for the young and old.

"Wonderful relaxing break in Kalkan at the beautiful Villa Guzel."

We have been Kalkan Regulars for a few years now. We love the relaxed vibe of the town. It's great restaurants, excellent bars and selection of shops. This time we stayed at Villa Guzel. It is certainly super comfy but also brilliantly located for the most spectacular views across the bay. We can't recommend enough and will certainly aim to return next year.

"Wonderful Again!"

We stayed in Villa Guzel in 2010 & just had to return as we loved it so much. Such a lovely villa & location . We love the extension of the patio including the BBQ & new shaded seating area & the minor additions, the WIFI Internet & the iced / hot water unit & the fact the hot water could be isolated as our 2 year old daughter loves switches. We were surprised how many of the restaurant staff remembered us & the food is still amazing but we found had increased in price, but of course so had the exchange rate to our benefit. We keep telling our friends how wonderful Kalkan is, but perhaps we should keep it our secret. We looked up your Availability Chart for 2013 & was not surprised to see how many booking you already have. We will return.

"Lovely villa in good location"

Villa Guzel looks good in the listing and lives up to expectations. The pool and outside areas are of a really good size especially for Kalkan, not overlooked and really quite private. There are a couple of nice shaded areas for eating or reading. The pool is a really good size with wide steps in. The bedrooms are also really large and each has it's own bathroom which is really essential when travelling with teenage daughters as we did. The upstairs master double has a huge balcony with barbecue and table and chairs for six, which we did not use but would be fantastic for a night in.
It's a really steep downhill walk into Kalkan, a taxi back is pretty essential and costs about 12 lira or so. There is an excellent little restaurant called Our Home just down the road, it serves really reasonable meals and does a take away service too. Ideal for your first day when you've not yet made it to the shop.
Overall we had a lovely week at Villa Guzel and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Thank you for your Review We are pleased it lived up to your expectations.

"Perfect Vacation Rental"

I have rented many properties in Turkey - both in Cesme and Bodrum. I have not been to this part of Turkey before and will definitely be back. The property was both comfortable on the inside and luxurious outside. The pool area was amazing. And the location felt very private - which is not how my other rentals were. The house has everything you could possibly need. The bedroom I stayed in (on the second floor) had this lovely balconey where you could sit and have your morning coffee. The bedrooms are big and the beds are comfortable. Every bedroom has their own bathroom. It is about a five minute drive into the town of Kalkan - where there are many fine restaurants. Look on trip advisor to find restaurant reviews - try a rooftop terrace that overlooks the sea. When the sun is going down - it is just gorgeous. Kalkan is a very friendly town. The shopkeepers are delightful. There is a beach club that is attached to a hotel (I just can't remember the name) that you can rent a sun bed and go swimming. We ate there several times and the food is very good. If you are worried about the language - everyone speaks English. This was a wonderful holiday - the house exceeded my expectations and the area was just beautiful. There is also sailing and boat trips for a very good price. Kas is a very nice place to visit as well. Thank you for a memorable holiday.

Thank You for such a nice review.

"Quality!!! Enough said really"

This vacation was probably the easiest to set up we have every booked. Len's assistance and advice were 2nd to none. I think he covered all the bases and this made for a relaxed stress free stay. The villa was excellent and what a superb view especially from the balcony. Kalkan is a lovely town with very friendly folk and the beauty of it is is that it's free from over commercialization. The food is superb, I would recommend Trio's, great service and the staff are excellent.
I would highly recommend staying at this villa. We intend to again in the very near future.

Thank you for the Compliment I try my best & give honest answers to any questions. Trios is also our favourite restaurant on the harbour but we & our guest list theirs. Thank you for the Review.

"A great base for your holiday in Kalkan"

Our first time in Kalkan, but certainly not our last. Chose Villa Guzel as we felt its location offered flexibility - you can relax by the pool, walk down into Kalkan and enjoy all that it has to offer or use it as a base from which to explore all the ancient historical sites and beautiful scenery in this area. We were not disappointed.
The villa is well appointed and has all that you need to live very comfortably. The bedrooms are spacious, light and airy. I appreciated the mosquito net over each bed. The pool is a good size if you like to get some exercise as well as just lazing in the water on the pool steps.
I must also add that Len was a delight to deal with, both by email and over the phone.

Glad you enjoyed Kalkan & Villa Guzel and pleased that you found me helpful.

"Fantastic 2 weeks in FAB Villa"

First time in Kalkan. Kids chose the villa due to the quirky appearance of turrett and shape of pool. Letting the kids choose was a fantastic result. Villa was roomy, excellent position, top service from cleaners and pool man. Owner Len prompt with enquiries and honest answers given to all questions. Nicest place in nicest town that we have stayed in. Decent restaurants nearby but all down the hill. It is a bit of a trek from the town but only if hot (15 min steady walk from a large amount of fab restaurants).

Thank You for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday & given Villa Guzel & Kalkan such a glowing report.
