The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The idyllic town of Kalkan on Turkey’s dramatic Lycian coastline nestles in the Taurus Mountains above a small, picturesque harbour. Its enchanting narrow streets lined with small shops, local restaurants and listed whitewashed houses with shuttered windows and carved-timber balconies covered in bougainvillea, twist down to an ancient harbour. From here, overlooked by a tiny whitewashed mosque, the fish are brought ashore in the morning and the wooden gulets sail out on their days trips around the bays and outlaying islands.
The climate in Kalkan is similar to that of Southern Carlifornia, and the sea is the colour of turquoise. There are several beautiful, unspoilt beaches and beach clubs to visit; a variety of sports activities available; and lots to do, including days out at the ancient sites of Xanthos, Kale, Patara, Letoon, Tlos and Kekova, shopping trips to the attractive harbour towns of Kas and Fethiye; a visit to the famous mud baths or Turkish baths; an excursion to the famous Saklikent Gorge, and much, much more.
The Kalkan area
Beautiful Beaches and Beach Clubs
• Kalkan is on the Mediterranean so the sea is warm and clear; making it perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving.
• Kalkan has its own attractive pebble beach.
• Or a 10 minute dolmus ride (local minibus service) will take you to beautiful Kaputas beach.
• Alternatively, a 25 minute ride takes you to the famous Patara beach with its 22km of pure white sand. Patara Beach, set in a national park, has been voted one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful and undiscovered beaches.
• Kalkan also has several beach clubs, some of which are fed by natural underground springs. These clubs are set in stunning locations on the coastline and have bathing platforms with sun loungers and steps down into the sea.
• There are also gullets in the harbour that offer daily excursions around the coast to the small bays, coves and outlying islands.
Activities – Kalkan has Something for Everyone
• Sports activities include water-skiing, paragliding, scuba-diving, canoeing, horse riding and trekking.
• Or take a jeep into the mountains for some breathtaking scenery and lunch at a local village.
• A gulet will take you to the sunken city of Kekovda where you can swim among the ruins before visiting the medieval castle at Kale with its ampitheatre and Lycian tombs.
• Or visit Xanthos and Saklikent Gorge. The ampitheatre of Xanthos is a World Heritage site and is on the way to the 20m long canyon of Saklikent Gorge. At Saklikent you can walk the 4km through the cold, shallow waters of the gorge before lazing on cushions on your own pontoon over the Xanthos river.
• Other sites include the temples at Lethoon and the acropolis at Tlos, the Church of St Nicholas ( Father Christmas), and the Green Lake national Park.
• There are the mud baths or the traditional Turkish bath and haman massage.
• Or spend the day shopping for bargains in Kas or Fethiye, where you can buy anything from local craftware to gold and silver jewellery, to fake designer clothes.
• At the end of the day why not unwind in one of Kalkan’s many roof-top or harbour-side restaurants, looking out over spectacular scenery, and eating arguably the best food available anywhere in the Mediterranean.
Whatever you want from a holiday, from relaxing in your own pool or on sun-drenched beaches, to learning to dive or water-ski, to visiting sites of historical or natural beauty, to shopping at bargain prices for real gold jewellery or fake designer labels, Kalkan has something for everyone. It’s no surprise that so many people return to Kalkan year after year.

Light, airy, clean, comfortable and, importantly in August, cool! All rooms air-conditioned, insect screens at all the windows, perfect! Great pool and terrace overlooking Kalkan Bay and town; fantastic view during day and very atmospheric at night. The Turkish agent cleaned the pool and maintained the plants and terrace every morning. Compromise for being high up on the hillside was that a car was essential, or at least it was in the heat of August! Some steep unmade roads, so the driving took a bit of getting used to! 3 bedrooms, all ensuite, perfect for family with teenagers. Elder daughter loved the top floor large room with jacuzzi bath and private roof terrace! Kalkan town - bustling and lively, in a good way! Too many restaurants to choose from; we chose two on the harbourside and one in the town with a roof terrace overlooking the bay - all good. The beach clubs around the bay were great., accessed by little boats from the harbour, although we also enjoyed Kaputas and Patara beaches. A lovely holiday and a resort and villa that we would definitely return to. |
