Beckside Cottage
About the home
Records show that Jas Long was producing spades for the local quarries as far back as 1829 from this former site of local industry, a craft now extinct throughout Lakeland. Today, 'Beckside Cottage' is the perfect rural holiday retreat, having been entirely transformed from its old spade forge origins and brought up to luxury modern standards in a stunning style.
Beckside Cottage is in an enviable position, situated only two miles from the southern most tip of Coniston Water. The A590 is four miles away, allowing for easy access, and the village of Coniston or market town of Ulverston a mere 15 minutes drive. The surrounding fields and woodland and beautiful countryside ensures that the tranquility of the location is preserved .
Boasting three comfortable, individually styled bedrooms easily sleeping six people, Beckside Cottage is the perfect location for a family holiday, big birthday event or just a chance to chill in company of friends.
Everything you require is provided should you decide to self-cater and make the most of the large cottage dining table seating for eight. The impressive fully fitted wooden kitchen has a large five burner, double oven range cooker, fridge/ freezer and dishwasher and opens out into the dining area, with it's cosy log burner.
The cottage has a super garden to the side and to the rear, set out on varying levels, full of colour throughout the year, complete with stream for dipping your toes at the water's edge.
Beckside Cottage offers both a home from home where you can simply relax and tuck up with a best seller and a base for exploring the National Park, that pleases all who stay.

Further details indoors:
Access to Beckside Cottage is to the rear of the cottage, where from the little porch, perfect for muddy boots, you enter the hall of the 'topsy turvey' house. Enchanting many guests the living accommodation is upstairs.
Off the lower hall are three bedrooms (a twin and two king size doubles), each carefully and tastefully furnished with a different Lakeland theme - Potter, Wordsworth and Bluebird. The master has both a king sized bed and en-suite shower room, while the second king size double and the twin room share a luxury fully tiled family bathroom with large bath and separate shower cubicle.
Up the stairs you are immediately into the large living room. Drenched in natural light this room has windows covering all aspects, with delightful views over the garden from large windows. After an invigorating day in the lakes, come home and sink into the deep comfy sofas. The large flat screen TV offers a range of digital channels or choose to chill out with a DVD, this is great space for socialising, reading or just relaxing. There is a feature stone fireplace with gas fire to cosy up to, but most will, perhaps, be propped up against the baby grand piano with a glass of wine in hand............if only Jamie Cullum were resident too!
From the lounge it's into the dining room and large, well equipped, kitchen, where with a log burning stove and a few candles, you can set the mood for fine dinners and conversation.
There is a useful external boot/utility/wash room for storing bikes and walking gear, this room also houses the washing machine and tumble dryer.
Beckside Cottage provides a real home from home, the perfect place to simply just relax and holiday at, and as a base for exploring the magnificent countryside, lake and villages. Whether you come for holidays with family and friends, or are gathering for reunion or celebration, Beckside Cottage will please, leaving you with many happy memories of your stay.
Further details outdoors:

Enquire nowThe Cumbria/Lake District region
Stunning mountains, open fells and the clear fresh water lakes – the Lake District landscape always inspires, with several literary greats, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter having had their creative juices stirred by the impressive scenery.
The Lake District is home to some of England’s best known and most beautiful scenery. While the central area, around Windermere and Ambleside, attract most of the visitors, those in the know head to less frequented spots, such as the Lake District’s south-western peninsula. Here the mountains meet the coast to give dramatic and unique vistas.
With a vast range of tourist attractions, historical sites and leisure activities (many within 15 minutes drive of Beckside Cottage), this part of the Lakes has so much to offer we are sure you will want to return again and again.
For the serious walker the mountains of Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn provide enjoyable challenges, whilst at lower levels there are hundreds of routes wandering among the lakes and stone-walled fields. You can even choose a lake to suit your mood: if bustling lakeside towns and exhilarating watersports take your fancy, then try Windermere or Coniston Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered boat soaking up the scenery in Victorian style or master a new skill such as kayaking, sailing or even raft building.
If it’s peace and tranquillity you seek then the secluded lakes of Buttermere and Wastwater are not to be missed. Yet Cumbria offers much more than the lakes alone. Explore the National Nature Reserve on Walney Island, the golden sand dunes of Roan Head or visit the hidden, picturesque Duddon Valley, with its heather clad moors peppered with birch trees.
The Coniston / Lowick, Cumbria area
Beckside Cottage nestles in the quiet hamlet of Lowick Green, one mile from the southern reach of Coniston Water, the heart of the Lake District.
Whether you would like to simply enjoy the complete quiet of ‘Beckside‘, take cycle rides or walks out from your door (whether for a leisurely stroll among the fells, hills and tarns or just a quick trip to one of the two friendly pubs within walking distance, your choice), or for use as a base for sightseeing the beautiful landscape of the Lake District National Park the location could hardly be better.
Lowick is a traditional village and still hosts the annual Lowick show, an excellent display of local craft and produce, the surrounding area farmed by local families throughout the ages. There are an abundance of gentle walks from the door at Beckside, and numerous villages can be reached within minutes drive. Coniston and Broughton are just two offering shops, cafes and a number of good pubs serving locally brewed ale.
From the Coniston, tracks lead up through the old coppermines valley and to the foot of Coniston Old Man, where the hearty can make an attempt to the 2635 ft summit and view never to be forgotten.
At the boating centre you can hire rowing, sailing and little electric power boats, setting off to explore the shoreline and bays.
The famous town of Bowness on Windermere is short 20min drive, nearby Grizedale Forest Enterprise Centre’s (4miles) tracks and trails invite mountain bikers to discover numerous stone and wood sculptures scattered among the trees, whilst nearby stately homes and gardens offer more sedate pleasures. Local shops including a deli, butcher, baker and fish and chip takeaway are 3 miles away in Greenodd.
Back at home, a short stroll from the cottage brings you to the local inns, The Farmers Arms (5min walk), The Royal Oak (10 min walk) or The Red Lion (15 min walk)which all offer great local ales and pub food.

I returned to stay at Beckside Cottage and it was every bit as wonderful as I remembered. It is an "upside down" cottage in a beautiful setting and easy to get to from the M6. As soon as you walk in the door you relax, from everyday life and enjoy everything this much loved and cared for cottage has to offer. It is the cleanest and most well equiped place. The owners seem to really love and care for it. The beds and bedding are a dream, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The location of the cottage makes it ideal for visiting the lakes or the local pubs. Would love to visit again! |

We loved our trip to the lakes, and our stay at the Beckside Cottage. Location location location. Close to miles and miles of nature trails, cozy pubs, restaurants, and lakes. If you don't feel like getting out, the cottage is very nice and very comfortably equipped with a large top notch kitchen. Fond memories of night caps by the living room fire, and breakfast where the morning sun warms your back at the kitchen table :). |

A lovely, clean and well equipped cottage in the heart of the South Lakes area. We've stayed a number of times over the years as a couple and with family. The location is ideally suited for all types of lakeland activities from walking through to cycling and, of course, visiting the local pubs. We'll be back again later in the year. |
