The Duddon Valley region
'Lakeland is exquisitely beautiful. The Southern fells in particular just happen to be a bit of heaven fallen upon the Earth' - A Wainwright.
Nature fashions the finest of architecture, with impressive mountains, majestic rock spires, steep passes, beautiful lakes, lonely tarns, gushing waterfalls, lush forests and breath-taking scenery, the southern fells of the Lake District await you.
Within 30 mins from J36 M6, you'll be transported to the heart of South Lakeland. Apart from the inspiring lakes and mountains, there are fantastic beaches within easy reach, and opportunities to spot wildlife and flora.
Coniston and the immediate area hosts a half marathon, traditional country fair, speed records week (Coniston Water), World rally car stages and Tour of Britain (Cumbria cycling stages) to mention but a few.
Ulverston hosts regular market town events, including a Dickensian Festival towards Christmas.
We hope that you decide to stay with us and find out more about what's on offer from this stunning part of England.
Torver, in the shadow of 'Coniston Old Man', nestles a pretty community based hamlet approx. 2 miles from Coniston.
With easy access to the southern fells of the Lake District, it is quiet enough to be away from the main tourist hub, yet a thriving vibrancy exists with stunning scenery and activities on your doorstep.
With two great pubs (including the famous Wilson Arms with weekly quiz) and a local village deli, you can dine with locals and tourists alike, enjoying award-winning real ales, open log-fires and banter with local characters and friendly, welcoming staff, you'll soon feel part of the Torver family.
A wealth of activities from gentle walks to rock-climbing, lake cruises to gorge scrambling can be enjoyed. Torver Country Fair is usually mid August annually, and with vintage motor cycle gatherings, charity tractor runs and other events popping up through the year, you may just enjoy something uniquely lakeland. There is horse-riding within 5 mins walk and in Coniston there are to shops, cafe's, museums, galleries, and boat hire from the boating centre .
Grizedale Forest hosts world rally stages, the north-face mountain bike trail, fantastic walks and tree-top adventures.
It is a 15 minute walk down to Coniston Water (Swallows and Amazons inspiration and Donald Campbell's speed record attempt), or 45 minute off-road walk down to Coniston. Alternatively, local bus stops within 150 metres can take you down to Coniston, home to the famous 'Bluebird' bitter from Coniston Brewing Company, or to Ulverston, a charming market town, home to the Laurel and Hardy museum, with plenty going on throughout the year.
With Ambleside/Windermere, Hawkshead, Ulverston and Sawrey (Beatrix Potter country) a mere 15 mins , and Bowness approx. 20 mins by car, there are plenty of reasons to explore the wider area too.
All in all, Torver is an ideal base for your self-catering lake district holiday and we look forward to welcoming you to stay.

"it does not get better than this"
we booked this accomodation online in australia. It was every bit as good as the pictures looked. every thing was provided and more.we would not hesitate to recomend this cottage to anyone.just remember to take the torch with you at night to the pub.
Thank you for your wonderful review of Ash Gill Cottage. We are glad that the photos show an accurate representation of the house and it's facilities, which is always great for any future guests wishing to book also. We hope you enjoyed your trip and glad that you found everything you needed, and yes we agree, a torch is a 'must-have' as it does get incredibly dark up in Torver - great for stargazing and meteor showers in clear dark skies. We hope you had a great journey back to Australia and if you're ever back in the UK, I hope we can welcome you back once again. Best regards, Bev and Pete

"Great trip to a fantastic cottage"
A party of 6 of us stayed for 3 weeks as part of a university geology project working and walking in the local Coniston fells. The cottage itself is well situated as a base for walking into the fells (and the Old Man of Coniston) and the Torver deli & The Wilsons Arms pub are great facilities to have nearby in the village. There is good access to Coniston & further afield to the Duddon Valley, Ambleside & Windermere by road - there is easily room for 2 cars at the cottage. The cottage is well and recently furnished as the photographs suggest with a large and comfortable combined living and dining area and a modern kitchen on the ground floor with a large hallway to store boots, coats & bags, etc. There are 2 twin rooms and a master bedroom (with double bed) upstairs which are again well furnished. There is an ensuite with shower connected to the master bedroom and a separate bathroom - both modern and well furnished. The house was kept clean (despite of 6 university students) by a weekly cleaner. All in all, we had a great trip & were really impressed by the quality of the cottage. Recommended.
Thank you for taking time out to write a wonderful review of your longer than usual stay with us. It is fantastic to learn that the house can deliver a comfortable, normal day to day living experience by 6 adults staying longer than the usual weekend or week long visit, and serves as an ideal base for those who wish to explore the delights that Lakeland and the local area has to offer. We are glad that you would recommend us, it was indeed a pleasure to welcome you to the local community for your time with us (our local quizmaster for the Sunday night quiz enjoyed your regular attendance). We hope that you completed your projects in good time and wish you much success with them and your future studies. We also hope to welcome you back to Torver and Ash Gill Cottage at some point in the future. Kindest regards to you all. Bev and Pete

"Very spacious, good quality accommodation in Torver"
This was our 17th stay at Ash Gill cottage, which says it all really! Super location with the Wilson Arms pub for food & refreshment nearby and lots of lovely walks from the house, including the Old Man of Coniston and Coniston Lake. The house is really well equipped with super furniture & furnishings. A luxury family bathroom plus ensuite & downstairs loo makes it easy for 6 people to stay very comfortably. We always have a great time!
Thank you for taking the time to write a wonderful review. We're glad you enjoyed your recent visit, your 17th year at Ash Gill, you're all practically locals!! With larger parties it is important to us to ensure that all guests are accommodated comfortably and are pleased you find Ash Gill to fit the bill. We have already booked out your favourite week for next year and look forward to welcoming you back once again. Best Regards, Bev and Pete, Stuart and Dorothy

"eighteen years and counting...."
We enjoyed our eighteenth stay at Ash Gill, and that should be a good endorsement of itself. We are all keen walkers, and Ash Gill provides superb access to the surrounding fells. The village has two pubs and it is great to stroll to one - in two minutes - for good beer, wines and food, after a rewarding day outside. The house facilities are good, recently updated, and our hosts invariably helpful. How long can we keep going?
Thank you very much for taking the time to review your 18th visit with us last May, and we are also pleased you have enjoyed the upgrading of facilities within the house last year. Being able to leave the car at 'home', whether to access the surrounding fells or the delights of the local pub, still prove to be popular motivations for our most loyal returning guests, who really, are considered friends of the family. We are so pleased you continue to enjoy your holidays at Ash Gill and we look forward to welcoming you all back to Torver again soon. To the next 18 years.......Cheers! Fondest Regards to you and all of your family. Pete and Bev, Stuart and Dorothy.
