Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

Granada province is characterised by extreme variables in landscape and climate, so much so that it's possible to ski in the mountains and go diving in the sea in one day. When you've exhausted the magnificent city of Granada, there are countless other possibilities: from going underground in cave dwellings in a desolate desert-like area, climbing the Iberian Peninsula's highest mountains or losing yourself in the region's rich Moorish history and fortified palaces.

Cortes De Baza

Of all the villages that make up the Huescar and Baza regions of the Altiplano area in the Granada Province, Cortes de Baza is arguably the most unspoiled of all. Its humble agricultural rural community and traditional way of life has remained intact despite modern advances and 21st century rural tourism. At an altitude of 701 metres above sea level, this beautiful municipality covers an area of around 140 Km2 and is in the GPS zone 30S with the bearings X: 05 20 40 and Y: 41 67 80. With a population of just over 3,000, this is an idyllic natural paradise, where you can expect a warm welcome from the local community.

Situated on the north point of the beautiful Negratin lake, Cortes de Baza offers the visitor not only the delights and benefits of being on the fringe of the Natural park, but is also a wonderful area to enjoy water sports and fishing.

On Lake Negratin you will find two beaches one at Freila with Pedalos and a bar on the beach in summer months. On the Cueva del Campo side of the lake there is another beach split in half, one side for Naturists the other for bathing costumes!

The history of Cortes de Baza goes back to prehistoric times, evidence of which is all around the area in the form of remains. This is especially true of the area known as Hoya de Baza. Ancient artefacts such as a Mammoth jawbone, cooking bowls and many other objects from Iberian, phonetician and roman cultures were found and subsequently taken by the authorities to Madrid to be catalogued.

Sadly the Castle of Cortes did not stand the test of time and is now only distinguishable by what remains of the foundations. This ancient monument was originally built in the 13th century by the Muslims to guard against attack from the Castilian armies.

Cortes de Baza enjoyed a time of great prosperity and splendour during Roman times and right through to the end of the time of the Moors, after which it went into decline. It has always been closely bound to Baza and is now looking to become a more independent municipality, which looks possible thanks to a new prosperity brought to the village, in the form of rural tourism.

The weekly market of Cortes de Baza is on each Saturday morning.

On the penultimate weekend of August, there is a festival held in honour of the patron saints, San Cosme and San Damián (Los Santos Médicos). this is a Fiesta not to be missed, dancing all night for three days, Fair, street stalls, bars, games, culminating on the Monday/Tuesday with a Village Paella (free) Tinto Verano & Beer (free) followed by a water and foam fight through the streets of the village and in the local school!!!

“Our 3rd Visit and we still love it !!!!”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2014

This was our 3rd visit to Cueva Peralta and have to say it just feels like "Home from Home" we see no reason to look for another cave house in the area as we have found everything we could wish for the cave is superb and is so well equipped it even has a new 32¨ Led TV and all the TV stations from around the world we love the act it also has wi-fi too.. We still managed to find new places to visit so many places to see we have been at different times of the year and the area still surprises us, Bob is very helpful it was a little cold but Bob supplied us with logs which makes the cave lovely and cozy we ran out on the Saturday night it had been raining all day and he kindly dropped more off for us without us asking. When we visited last year we booked for our 2 week holiday and had to return to the UK after 5 days sadly,we always planned on re visiting in the summer again but we just decided to have a long weekend to break the winter months and glad we did as we are all very relaxed including our 3 little dogs who enjoyed there walks down the river 2 mins from the cave. We have to say Bob has restored our faith in human kindness he would not take any money for our weekend booking as we lost 1 week last year he didn't need to do this but so kind of him we will return and cant praise this Cave and location enough you wont be disappointed we will be back for sure and tell our friends too .

Thank you for your wonderful review and I hope that it isn't long before I welcome you back to Cueva Peralta

“A home from home”

Just had the most fantastic long weekend ever in the Cave House. It had everything you could wish for fully equipped, wifi, hot tub etc. the location and scenery was wonderful. We had out 10 month old puppy Bella with us and was surrounded by beautiful countryside and river walks. Would highly recommend staying in the Cave House and we loved it so much we have booked again to go back next year.

Thank you both for your your great review and comments in the guestbook, see you both in the New Year. Best wishes.

“best holiday ever !!”

I can say with all seriousness that our stay at Cueva Peralta was the most enjoyable holiday that we have had, and we are quite well travelled. Bob is the perfect host friendly, helpful and with a great sense of humour. We arrived in this beautiful part of Spain with only a rough idea of what to expect. The cave house was beyond our expectations and has to be experienced to be believed, spacious, homely and totally relaxed. It is the perfect base for exploring Andalucia where breathtaking scenery seems to be around every corner. We are presently looking for our own cave house and the stay at Bobs cave has reinforced our conviction,we cant wait to visit again next year and would recommend " BOBS PLACE" to anyone looking for a break with a difference

Thank you both for the fabulous review, will see see you early next year.

“Unique property in a great location”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2013

Large charming authentic cave house within easy driving distance of many fabulous places to visit. Lovely to have the BBQ to eat al fresco and the hot tub as an added luxury. Useful information provided about the local area and good recommendations from Bob the owner regarding where to eat in the local town where the locals were friendly and the food and drink were good value. Would definitely return to introduce other friends to the unique experience of staying in a cave and to explore more of the area which has lots to offer.

Thank you for your review of Cueva Peralta and will see you all again in Autumn

“Absolutely Brilliant”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2013

A peaceful retreat away from it all, but with every amenity you could possibly want. The cave is a wonderful experience not to be missed, fabulously furnished and olde worlde. Just a short walk into the village for an authentic Spanish flavour, we can't wait to return and would recommended it to anyone. Bob the owner lives next door and is very friendly and knowledgeable on the area and on hand if you need or want to know anything.

Thank you so much for your review and look forward to receiving you back at "Cueva Peralta"

“wow, what a place, Bob is wonderful”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2013

What a place, the cave is wonderful, we could not have been happier, the four of us around the age of 60 had a great time. The surrounding area is stunning and everyone so friendly. We went up near the lake and swam in the volcanic pool which is lovely and warm and the views of the lake from it are outstanding the cost for the swim 2 euros. Montayo bar in the village ,was wonderful free tapas with every drink great prices. Bob what can we say , thanks so much for your kindness and understanding, we hope to visit again, would you be able to put up with "demolition Dave" as we now call him. You are a lovely man xxxxx

Thank you so much for your review. I am so glad that you had a "smashing time" and hope to see you all in the near future

“We loved our stay at Cueva Peralta and can't wait to return.”

Reviewed 17 May 2013

We have been visiting the area for around 10 years and Cortes de Baza for the last 4 or 5, and it feels like home from home. This was the first time we had stayed at Cueva Peralta, but it won't be the last - its very good value considering how well appointed it is, and the owner, Bob Pettit, couldn't be more helpful or friendly. Living next door, he's there if you need him but otherwise not intrusive at all. The cave is on the outskirts of the village, within easy walking distance of the centre - handy if you decide to have a supper of the free tapas that the bars serve with every round of drinks! Our grand-children loved the hot tub, exploring the badlands and hunting for frogs by the stream a short walk away.

Thank you John, Rosie and Geraldine, hope to see you all in October. Bob
