Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

Granada province is characterised by extreme variables in landscape and climate, so much so that it's possible to ski in the mountains and go diving in the sea in one day. When you've exhausted the magnificent city of Granada, there are countless other possibilities: from going underground in cave dwellings in a desolate desert-like area, climbing the Iberian Peninsula's highest mountains or losing yourself in the region's rich Moorish history and fortified palaces.

Cortes de Baza

Of all the villages that make up the Huescar and Baza regions of the Altiplano area in the Granada Province, Cortes de Baza is arguably the most unspoiled of all. Its humble agricultural rural community and traditional way of life has remained intact despite modern advances and 21st century rural tourism. At an altitude of 701 metres above sea level, this beautiful municipality covers an area of around 140 Km2 and is in the GPS zone 30S with the bearings X: 05 20 40 and Y: 41 67 80. With a population of just over 3,000, this is an idyllic natural paradise, where you can expect a warm welcome from the local community.
Situated on the north point of the beautiful Negratin lake, Cortes de Baza offers the visitor not only the delights and benefits of being on the fringe of the Natural park, but is also a wonderful area to enjoy water sports and fishing.
On Lake Negratin you will find two beaches one at Freila with Pedalos and a bar on the beach in summer months. On the Cueva del Campo side of the lake there is another beach split in half, one side for Naturists the other for bathing costumes!
The history of Cortes de Baza goes back to prehistoric times, evidence of which is all around the area in the form of remains. This is especially true of the area known as Hoya de Baza. Ancient artefacts such as a Mammoth jawbone, cooking bowls and many other objects from Iberian, phonetician and roman cultures were found and subsequently taken by the authorities to Madrid to be catalogued.
Sadly the Castle of Cortes did not stand the test of time and is now only distinguishable by what remains of the foundations. This ancient monument was originally built in the 13th century by the Muslims to guard against attack from the Castilian armies.
Cortes de Baza enjoyed a time of great prosperity and splendour during Roman times and right through to the end of the time of the Moors, after which it went into decline. It has always been closely bound to Baza and is now looking to become a more independent municipality, which looks possible thanks to a new prosperity brought to the village, in the form of rural tourism.
The weekly market of Cortes de Baza is on each Saturday morning.
On the penultimate weekend of August, there is a festival held in honour of the patron saints, San Cosme and San Damián (Los Santos Médicos). this is a Fiesta not to be missed, dancing all night for three days, Fair, street stalls, bars, games, culminating on the Monday/Tuesday with a Village Paella (free) Tinto Verano & Beer (free) followed by a water and foam fight through the streets of the village and in the local school!!!

“Amazing stay in a beautiful place”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2017

The cave house was easy to find with Bob's great directions. We drove up from Almeria airport and stopped at the lake for lunch. Bob showed us around the village and pointed us in the direction of places to eat. We had a great walk along the river and back to the house. We drove to Castril and did the gorge walk what a fantastic day. We eat in the village again and met some friendly locals. Thanks Bob for an interesting and exciting couple of days. The cave house is great and Bob makes you feel very welcome.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your wonderful review, I hope that I can welcome you back in the near future.

También hay un río para pasear a un par de minutos andando, el pueblo andando esta cerca y tenéis el parque natural sierra de baza.

“Cuava Peralta in the spring!”

Reviewed 4 Apr 2016

Travelling with my small dog Charly ,I have just had the pleasure of staying for 4 nights at Cueva Peralta in the spring time. The cave is situated a short walk from Cortes de Baza in the agricultural belt and signs of spring were clearly evident with almond blossom on the trees, spring flowers growing along the road side and fields of broad beans not long from being harvested. In the distance the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada range were clearly playing host to the skiing fraternity. Cueva Peralta is an extremely good venue as a touring base. It is very comfortable, well furnished and relaxing to stay in. I enjoy the walks along by the river and so does Charly. It is our third visit to the cave and we have two more booked this year. I would strongly recommend the experience if you want to taste real life in authentic Spain. Bob the cave owner is close at hand to answer any queries and help with suggestions. I always leave feeling much more refreshed and able to face the world!

Owner's reply: Dear Sarah and Charly, thank you for you review it is greatly appreciated, See you again later in the year.

“A relaxing and enjoyable break.”

Reviewed 27 Mar 2016

This was our first experience of a cave house. It had been recommended to us by friends and we were not disappointed. The house has been tastefully furnished creating a pleasant and tranquil environment. Our host gave us a tour on the village and local area which was very helpful. He was happy to make recommendations of places to visit and where to enjoy a drink and something to eat. We were there for four nights, had four good sleeps and and felt refreshed by the end of our stay. We are happy to recommend the cave house to anyone who enjoys a peaceful environment and have a "Spanish" experience.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review, and comments, I look forward to welcoming you back in the summer.

“A Little Piece Of Paradise”

Reviewed 6 Mar 2016

Another Sensational Stay at Cueva Peralta!! The place really is paradise. This was our second visit and we will be back again. It was lovely to meet up with the owners Bob & Paulo again who are always on hand if you need anything. Nothing is too big or small for them, guests satisfaction is their main goal. The cave is so situated which makes taking a ramble, a perfect pastime. Be it along the river or into the village. Whereby it was pleasing to be recognised by the villagers, and for me I found it very endearing that on our first night we decided to eat in the local village, and alerted the staff to my Husband's cheese allergy. Over a week later when we went back there the staff member remembered. The locals are such lovely friendly people. The cave is fully equipped with everything you will need for a very comfortable stay in such a beautiful location, so peaceful and tranquil. The town of Baza is only a very pleasant short drive away where you will find a variety of shops against a backdrop of some beautiful scenery. A little bit further on and you could be visiting Granada, taking in the sights of the Sierra Nevada or admiring the stunning views from Lake Negratin.

Owner's reply: Dear Jeanette and Derek, thank you so much for your wonderful review of Cueva Peralta, I look forward to welcoming you back next year. Best Regards Bob

“A Winter break at Cueva Peralta”

Reviewed 19 Dec 2015

We decided to have a short December break at Cueva Peralta partly because we had such a great time there in August but also because we fancied trying it out to see how warm and comfortable a cave is in winter. It was lovely and cosy! The cave retains a constant temperature of approximately 59F. There is a wood burner which we used in the evenings and it really enhanced the rustic and relaxing atmosphere of the cave. We love staying at Cueva Peralta and are returning again next August. Bob and Paulo, the owners, were very helpful and welcomed us back and it was lovely to see them again. Seeing Cortes de Baza was also a great pleasure. Cant wait for August 2106!

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your "winter break" review of Cueva Peralta. It will be lovely to welcome you back in 2016, and may I wish you a happy new year. Best Regards Bob

“Beautiful Cave House in stunning Countryside”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2015

Just had an amazing 3 weeks staying at Cueva Peralta. We were very sorry to leave and are already planning our return. What a gem the Cave House is! Spacious, relaxing and well furnished it will give you a very comfortable stay. Situated on the edge of Cortes de Baza in a semi rural area, there are beautiful walks along the nearby river through beautiful countryside. Perfect for us to get fit and to exercise our small dog Charly. It is an agricultural area and we loved watching the daily courgette harvest and the local grapes preparing themselves for picking! Cortes de Baza is a friendly place. A typical small Spanish town that comes alive at Fiesta time . There are a few good bars that serve excellent beers, wines, tapas and food and the people are very welcoming. There is a market on a Saturday which sells good locally produced veg and Cortes has a bakery, butchers, fish shop and two small supermarkets. Bob and Paulo , the owners, live next door to Cueva Peralta and are very helpful and supportive. Both are very interesting people and have a lot of information about the area to make your stay a good one. We would really recommend staying in the Cave. You get a really good night's sleep and plenty of vivid dreams, if that is what you need. The high light of our stay were the country walks, drinks in town with Bob and Paulo, visiting local places and experiencing the delights of the local wildlife. Last Sunday over 30 eagles circled over the cave house looking for prey. They flew over so low you could see their markings. It was like being in a BBC wildlife programme. Quite thrilling! Yes, Cueva Peralta is a lovely place to stay. Thanks Bob and Paulo!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your wonderful and informative review, which will assist people to choose to experience the beautiful Andalucia countryside and lovely welcoming Pueblos. Thank you both again and see you in the near future. Bob
