The Andalucia region
Granada province is characterised by extreme variables in landscape and climate, so much so that it's possible to ski in the mountains and go diving in the sea in one day. When you've exhausted the magnificent city of Granada, there are countless other possibilities: from going underground in cave dwellings in a desolate desert-like area, climbing the Iberian Peninsula's highest mountains or losing yourself in the region's rich Moorish history and fortified palaces.
Cortes De Baza
Of all the villages that make up the Huescar and Baza regions of the Altiplano area in the Granada Province, Cortes de Baza is arguably the most unspoiled of all. Its humble agricultural rural community and traditional way of life has remained intact despite modern advances and 21st century rural tourism. At an altitude of 701 metres above sea level, this beautiful municipality covers an area of around 140 Km2 and is in the GPS zone 30S with the bearings X: 05 20 40 and Y: 41 67 80. With a population of just over 3,000, this is an idyllic natural paradise, where you can expect a warm welcome from the local community.
Situated on the north point of the beautiful Negratin lake, Cortes de Baza offers the visitor not only the delights and benefits of being on the fringe of the Natural park, but is also a wonderful area to enjoy water sports and fishing.
On Lake Negratin you will find two beaches one at Freila with Pedalos and a bar on the beach in summer months. On the Cueva del Campo side of the lake there is another beach split in half, one side for Naturists the other for bathing costumes!
The history of Cortes de Baza goes back to prehistoric times, evidence of which is all around the area in the form of remains. This is especially true of the area known as Hoya de Baza. Ancient artefacts such as a Mammoth jawbone, cooking bowls and many other objects from Iberian, phonetician and roman cultures were found and subsequently taken by the authorities to Madrid to be catalogued.
Sadly the Castle of Cortes did not stand the test of time and is now only distinguishable by what remains of the foundations. This ancient monument was originally built in the 13th century by the Muslims to guard against attack from the Castilian armies.
Cortes de Baza enjoyed a time of great prosperity and splendour during Roman times and right through to the end of the time of the Moors, after which it went into decline. It has always been closely bound to Baza and is now looking to become a more independent municipality, which looks possible thanks to a new prosperity brought to the village, in the form of rural tourism.
The weekly market of Cortes de Baza is on each Saturday morning.
On the penultimate weekend of August, there is a festival held in honour of the patron saints, San Cosme and San Damián (Los Santos Médicos). this is a Fiesta not to be missed, dancing all night for three days, Fair, street stalls, bars, games, culminating on the Monday/Tuesday with a Village Paella (free) Tinto Verano & Beer (free) followed by a water and foam fight through the streets of the village and in the local school!!!

"A Winter break at Cueva Peralta"
We decided to have a short December break at Cueva Peralta partly because we had such a great time there in August but also because we fancied trying it out to see how warm and comfortable a cave is in winter. It was lovely and cosy! The cave retains a constant temperature of approximately 59F. There is a wood burner which we used in the evenings and it really enhanced the rustic and relaxing atmosphere of the cave. We love staying at Cueva Peralta and are returning again next August. Bob and Paulo, the owners, were very helpful and welcomed us back and it was lovely to see them again. Seeing Cortes de Baza was also a great pleasure. Cant wait for August 2106!
Thank you so much for your "winter break" review of Cueva Peralta. It will be lovely to welcome you back in 2016, and may I wish you a happy new year. Best Regards Bob

"Beautiful Cave House in stunning Countryside"
Just had an amazing 3 weeks staying at Cueva Peralta. We were very sorry to leave and are already planning our return. What a gem the Cave House is! Spacious, relaxing and well furnished it will give you a very comfortable stay. Situated on the edge of Cortes de Baza in a semi rural area, there are beautiful walks along the nearby river through beautiful countryside. Perfect for us to get fit and to exercise our small dog Charly. It is an agricultural area and we loved watching the daily courgette harvest and the local grapes preparing themselves for picking! Cortes de Baza is a friendly place. A typical small Spanish town that comes alive at Fiesta time . There are a few good bars that serve excellent beers, wines, tapas and food and the people are very welcoming. There is a market on a Saturday which sells good locally produced veg and Cortes has a bakery, butchers, fish shop and two small supermarkets. Bob and Paulo , the owners, live next door to Cueva Peralta and are very helpful and supportive. Both are very interesting people and have a lot of information about the area to make your stay a good one. We would really recommend staying in the Cave. You get a really good night's sleep and plenty of vivid dreams, if that is what you need. The high light of our stay were the country walks, drinks in town with Bob and Paulo, visiting local places and experiencing the delights of the local wildlife. Last Sunday over 30 eagles circled over the cave house looking for prey. They flew over so low you could see their markings. It was like being in a BBC wildlife programme. Quite thrilling! Yes, Cueva Peralta is a lovely place to stay. Thanks Bob and Paulo!
Thank you for your wonderful and informative review, which will assist people to choose to experience the beautiful Andalucia countryside and lovely welcoming Pueblos. Thank you both again and see you in the near future. Bob

"Perfect for a relaxing break"
We had a few days at the cave house and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Bob met us ad after carrying our cases in he drove us around the village to show us all the best places to eat, drink or shop. He knew all the best places to go and during our short stay we went to a super lake and had lunch, what total peace!!. A lovely river walk near our cave, a typical Spanish market and some delightful nearby villages. We were only sad that we could not have stayed longer and hope to visit again soon
Thank you for your review and I hope that I can welcome you back to Cueva Peralta later in the year. Best regards to all.

"Cave life suited us down to (into?) the ground"
We three (middle-aged couple with 20-year-old son) enjoyed our week at Cueva Peralta immensely, and it went all too fast. Thank you so much, Bob, for creating this utterly unique and delightful home and letting it be ours for these days! A holiday like this is a rare treat. There was no need to ‘make ourselves at home’: we felt at home here almost immediately, thanks to your warm welcome (and from the next day Paulo’s too). We didn’t even have to come and knock on your door: there you were in the road to greet us, as if by magic, as we drove up and stopped the car! Thank you for the wine you generously produced for us, too –– most welcome and, as we very soon discovered, delicious. As you showed us around and pointed out what the cave house and then the village itself, too, have to offer we felt lucky and privileged to be there. And over the week, our appreciation grew. We realised more and more how much thoughtful empathy and care you’d put into making CP a real home for your visitors and providing everything they — we — could possibly want or need, and more. From the well-equipped kitchen to the superb Internet TV, the DVDs, books and stereo… the hot tub and the extra big towels for outdoor use… the wonderfully comfortable beds, attractive furnishings and cosy, restful ambiance of the whole place… And then the tranquillity and privacy, combined with the sense of security we had from having you and Paulo, with your great knowledge of the area and all kinds of helpful advice, just next door… everything made us feel like pampered guests in a real, private home, and given us pleasure. And to crown all that: glorious weather! It was a joy to have all our meals outside and we revelled in the warmth and sunshine. We could (should?) have gone out more, but just being there at home has been a joy. Altogether we had a lovely time, for which you have our heartfelt thanks. And I look forward to being back in September! All our very best, Clare, Marek and Robin
Dear Clare, Marek and Robin, thank you for your wonderful and comprehensive review of Cueva Peralta, I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and that you will be returning in September! Best Regards Bob

"The Primal Cave Adventure"
We travelled with our two friends Dave & Caroline on Wednesday 18th March to our first adventure to The Primal Cave, not knowing what to expect, other than reading the reviews and looking at the photo's. We were greeted by Bob (the owner) & Paulo, who even on the first meeting made us so welcome, it made the whole adventure seem so inviting, we were shown all the facilities and amenities in our accommodation for the next 5 days. The first thing thing that struck us was who homely it felt and how nice the whole cave looked inside it was fabulous, everything was explained to us and we were assured that if there was anything that we might want to know, about the accommodation and surrounding area, places to see or visit, just ask, we also found a folder with all the recommendations, full of useful information. Well we all thoroughly enjoyed each day, where at the end of a tiring day exploring we used the hot tub to chill out and relax in with a nice drink at the end of the day. We would like to recommend this Cave Rental and we will definitely be coming back to explore the rest of this lovely area, we cannot speak highly enough of our 2 hosts who looked after us throughout our entire stay, whenever we needed any information. We definitely enjoy our Primal Cave Adventure, many thanks again Bob & Paulo, for all your hospitality throughout our stay. Many Thanks George, Gill, Dave & Caroline
Dear all, thank you for your great review, I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Cueva Peralta and I look forward to welcoming you all back in the near future.

"Unique accommodation in a superb location"
visited Cueva Peralta in March 2015 with my husband, 7 year old daughter and our dog. We stayed for 3 days and had a fantastic time. Bob was amazingly welcoming and his mini guide to the local village and tips for trips was invaluable. We walked to the village on Friday night (an easy 10 minute stroll) and enjoyed delicious cheap drinks and free tapas at Victors and another bar which I cant recall sorry, both were child friendly. The cave had everything we needed and was surprisingly cosy. We used the wood burner at night. more for atmosphere but it threw out a lot of heat and the house really retained the warmth. It was very dark and quiet at night, a perfect chill out space. My daughter was crazy about the accommodation and really enjoyed her cave room. She loved collecting wood for the fire, exploring down by the river and lounging in the hot tub. She said it was one of her best holidays ever - high praise from a 7 year old - and she didn't want to leave! We really enjoyed our stay - the house was fab with lots of atmosphere and in a great central location for exploring, I'd definitely recommend it!
Thank you for your wonderful review, I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Cueva Peralta, and that your daughter enjoyed it so much. I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future

"Idyllic location & cave house"
This was our first stay in a Cave house and won't be the last! We really did enjoy the experience, the views were perfect, Bob was so welcoming and took us a drive around the immediate area showing us the village amenities, and the best way to get the lakes etc. The area itself is perfect for cycling and walking This Cave House is ideal if you want to escape from everyday life! Bliss.
Thank you for your wonderful review and I hope that I can welcome you back to cycle a few more routes around Cueva Peralta in the near future. All the best in 2015

"Superb Cave in a Great Location"
Lovely cave house in a stunning location. The property was clean and well appointed. Our host met us on arrival after very clear directions to the house. The village is just a short walk away with friendly bars serving free tapas with a beer and a small supermarket covering most of our needs. Although very rural there is plenty to see and do. From Gorge walking in Castril to horse riding in the Sierra de Baza. Bobs knowlege of the area and help will leave the most novice of travellers at ease. Hoping to return in the future.
Thank you for your great review and I hope that I welcome you back to rural Andalucia in the near future.
