About Costa de la Luz
Costa de la Luz, the “Coast of Light”, is a section of the Andalusian coast in Spain facing the Atlantic. A haven for both Spaniards and other European residents alike, Costa de la Luz is one of the top beach retreat's in Spain. A very mild winter leads to a hot summer for those looking to hit the surf for a holiday. Aside from the beaches and the sunshine, there are ample opportunities and facilities for leisure activities, like fine dining, golf, kitesurfing, boating, and other water sports. The Costa de la Luz is especially noted for the beauty of its protected natural reserves and a number of first-rate natural attractions, such as Doñana National Park, the Bay of Cadiz, the salt marshes of Barbate, the Andalusian coastline itself and the cliffs of La Breña. It is also one of the coolest beach destinations in Europe, with surfing, hip hangouts and a laid-back attitude.
Things to do in Costa de la Luz
The beaches are the main attractions in this unspoiled area. The sand is finer and a more golden colour than in the neighbouring Costa del Sol to the east and the reliable winds make it a prime kite surfing locale. Many of the beaches here are backed by sand dunes and pine trees. In summer, nightlife centres around the chiringuitos, which are the beach bars that line Playa de la Victoria. Tarifa, the windsurfing capital of Europe, is just 13km (8 miles) across the water from North Africa. Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is one of Andalucia's most visited parks, renowned for its wildlife, rugged limestone landscape and great hiking territory.
Chipiona, Rota, El Puerto de Santa María, Puerto Real, Chiclana, Conil, Barbate and Tarifa are some of the main towns and cities in Costa de la Luz. They were primarily fishing towns but the growth of tourism has urbanized them a bit with fine dining, nightlife, and attractions. Climb to the top of the Torre Tavira, the highest of Cadiz's old watchtowers. Cadiz is famous for its carnivals, with music, costumes and revelry. Cadiz is also rich in outstanding coastal features like the natural monuments of the Tombolo de Trafalgar, Corrales de Rota, Duna de Bolonia and the Punta del Boquerón. The excellent Museo de Cádiz exhibits Phoenician and Roman artefacts and paintings by Francisco Zurbarán, as well as local crafts.
Huelva is a pleasant city with a bustling port, with loads of great seafood restaurants to choose from. The city also appeals to the cultural tourist with some interesting attractions, monuments and historical buildings.
