The Algarve / Central Algarve region
The Algarve boasts an average of more than 250 days sunshine per year. Average temperatures range from 10 - 20 degrees during October - January and 18 - 30 degrees between March - September, with July / August being the hottest months.
Visitors return year after year to enjoy the vast array of facilities available, from beautiful sandy beaches on spectacular rugged coastlines, deep sea fishing or coastal boat rides. Historical towns and whitewashed villages adorn the spectacular hillsides to the north which are ripe for exploring and trekking, cycling or leisurely drives.
There are many sports facilities including championship golf courses, horse riding, tennis and a wide range of water sports. For Motor racing fans the newly opened Algarve Motor Park, which hosts Formula 1 testing and both bike and car racing, is situated just outside Portimao.
For children there are the beaches, boat rides, inland safari trips, go-karting, water parks and the zoo marine where you can swim with the dolphins.
Shopping is a pleasant, leisurely experience in The Algarve with a wide choice of friendly shops, one-off boutiques, bustling markets and colourful roadside stalls. Good buys include bright pottery, wicker baskets and hampers, cork goods, locally crafted knitwear and leather shoes, bags, belts and clothes.
As the sun sets, the restaurants and bars open their doors to offer a wide range of international and local cuisine. Eating holds a prominent place in Portuguese life. Enticing eateries tempt you at every turn along the Algarve Coastline and throughout the colourful countryside. Alfresco intimate dining, family and group orientated restaurants catering for all tastes and pockets. For the more energetic, the larger towns of Albufeira and Villamoura have many late night clubs.
The Loule area
Loule is a charming old market town hosting the recently restored Loule Municipal Market where fresh fruit and vegetables can be bought and sold, together with fish, meat and delicatessen products, as well as other food stuffs and non-food products.
There are the remains of a castle dating back to the 12th century. This Arab castle was severely damaged by the earthquake that occurred in 1755 but within the remaining walls is a museum which explains the past grandeur of the caste. There are also several restaurants within the old castle walls.
The charismatic market town of Loule is also al thriving craft centre and is famous for its handicrafts, such as copper goods, wrought iron work, candles and clogs - a lattice of cobbled lanes unfolds and assortment of craft shops where you are free to watch skilled workers carving wood, painting pottery and making lace. Loule has many other fine shops and restaurants and also a weekly Saturday market full of bustle.
There are many festivals throughout the area which are worth visiting depending on when you are travelling. The most popular is Branca Noite (White Night) Festival held in Loule town centre which marks the end of summer. Held during the last weekend of August, everyone attending and participating wears white for the whole evening. Street entertainers, musicians, jazz bands and late night DJ's adorn the streets and shops open their doors for late night shopping, each decorating their windows in white. Museums and places of interest are free of charge for those wearing white.

We stayed at Casa Tranquila with my family, ages ranging from 8yrs to 71yrs. The villa is in a lovely quiet spot on the hillside with beautiful views down to the sea. You do need some sort of transport as all amenities are on hand in Loule but not within walking distance. The villa is very spacious, comfortable, clean and well equipped. Plenty of sunloungers around the large, clean pool. Gardens are well kept. We would stay here again happily. |
