The Algarve region
The Algarve coast, in the south of Portugal, is its best-known region for beaches, warm seas and all the ingredients for a good family holiday but other areas of this very friendly country are having increasing appeal. Two hours and 30 minutes flying from the UK opens up a country of mountains, plains and picturesque coastline.
The Algarve remains the top pick for British family holidays, mainly down to its consistently good beach resorts along a coast stretching from the Spanish border to Cape St Vincent. Families know that places such as Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Praia de Rocha and Lagos not only have sandy beaches but also safe bathing, good child-friendly restaurants and quality accommodation. In recent years more accommodation has been developed in the hinterland in the coastal mountains and offering cool higher altitudes and excellent views. It is here that holidaymakers can take a break from sunbathing with arts and crafts’ shopping at Loule or exploring the spa town of Monchique
While summer temperatures can reach 30C plus, the Atlantic breezes on the western and southern coasts make Portugal’s climate comfortable, especially for children. Like most tourist-orientated countries Portugal’s restaurants have adopted visitor tastes and many dishes on menus will be familiar, local cuisine makes much of sardines, tuna, anchovies and seafood.
Carvoeiro is a picturesque fishing village which still retains its local Portuguese character and charm. It is situated just 50 minutes along the main coast road West of Faro airport and is set in the hillside overlooking its own pretty beach dotted with fishing boats. There are several other beautiful beaches nearby such as Centianes and Benagil and the waters around Algar Secos rock formation are ideal for snorkelling. There are many local shops and minimarkets, a pharmacy, banks, doctors clinic, butchers, bakers, and newsagents, as well as a large Sainsburys style supermarket just outside the town.
Although small, Carvoeiro has many bars and restaurants, who all welcome children and offer children's menus. The town is fairly lively in the evenings, but remains an ideal place for couples or families alike, with restaurants for all tastes and pockets and plenty of friendly bars. There is also a small piazza called Monte Carvoeiro near to the complex with several restaurants where you can experience a stone steak, cooking your own steak on a hot stone. There are even 2 nightclubs for late birds or teenagers and taxis are easy to pick up from the taxi rank in the centre of the town.
Carvoeiro is within easy reach of Portimao with its harbour and famous sardine restaurants, the historic town of Silves, the Monchique mountains and 35 mins from Albufeira, the liveliest resort on the Algarve. Slide & Splash water park is 10 minutes drive and The Big One water park and the popular Zoo Marine with dolphin and seal shows are approximately 20 minutes drive.
There are two golf courses in Carvoeiro, Quinta do Gramacho and a 9 hole course on the Vale do Milho development. The championship course at Penina is a 20 minute drive, Vilamoura a 35 minute drive and Vale do Lobo a 40 minute drive. Tennis can be booked at the Quinta do Paraiso, Carvoeiro Club and Rocha Brava. Swimming, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are all available.

We had a absolutly fantastic time at Casa Patinho and would love to visit again. We found the accomodation to be spacious and tidy and loved sitting out in the evening enjoying the barbecue facilities once the kids had gone to bed. We made great use of the swimming facilities during the day which were never crowded and regularly made the short walk to the beach and town centre where there was always a great atmosphere. Many thanks to the owners who made sure that our trip was relaxing and hassle free even with three children under four!

we stayed here at the end of june and all felt as if it was home from home! the villa really is very spacious and the roof terrace was a lovely setting for evening drinks.it has a nice built in bbq which we used one night when we all felt too lazy to go out! the large shared pools and bar were just a couple of minutes walk and the town itself was 15 min away although there are restaurants and bars closer.we would all recommend this villa and resort.

"Brilliant holiday away with friends"
Have stayed here before with my family and because of the great time we had, I came back with friends, this villa is a very spacious with 3 bedrooms. It is conveniently situated between 2 pools on La Quinta, a small quiet pool to the right, and large pool areas with restaurant and bar with background music, great for everyone to enjoy, and not far from the main Caveiro town with loads of restaurants,Bars and the beach. Would highly recommend to stay here for your holiday

"This rental is perfect for families with young children"
We stayed in Casa Patinho for 2 weeks and we had a fantastic holiday. The house is lovely, nice and cool in the heat and prefectly positioned near the pool and restaurants. We found the house facilities super and everything we could possible need with a young family. The resort itself is prefect for young kids, from the pools to the nightly entertainment. It was a great success and I would highly recommend Casa Patinho.

"SecondTime Here - Another Fantstic Holiday"
This is the second year in a row we have stayed here and it was, once again, fantastic. The apartment is very homely, comfortable and welcoming - a home from home in many ways. The master bedroom is on the top floor and has a great sun deck leading off from it which is great. It is only a 3 or 4 minute walk to the swimming pools and about 15 minutes down into Carvoeiro. The whole resort is great and very well looked after. We were there with 2 young children but the apartment and the resort would suit older children as well. We had one small issue at the beginning concerning a card you need to be by the pool but we contacted the owners and it was sorted within minutes. We would throrougly recommend this apartment

"Ideal for families"
The villa is well placed on an established complex which is ideal for young families. Equally the resort, although a little trek if you want to go into the town every night (albeit we did it with 6 and 3 year olds), is very nice for young families with a picturesque small beach and enough places to eat. When we stayed the accommodation was very well priced in comparison to others. Difficult to make too much use of the upstairs bedroom (which is the best) if you want to sleep on the same floor as your kids but three very adequate bedrooms.

"A very clean, comfortable and homely villa in a lovely locstion"
The villa contains everything you need to enable you to have a relaxing time, which makes you feel at home from the word go. The equipment purchased in the kitchen has been well thought out. The BBQ area is ideal. The roof terrace superb for any time of the day, with lovely views. A two minute walk to the swimming pools and leisure area. Food and drinks reasonably priced. the area is clean and well maintained.Very pleasant and helpful staff.

"Great facilities and location wrapped up in traditional villa -lovely accommodation"
Really nice traditional villa, good sized accommodation, nice and close to local complex shop, entertainment, pool and tennis. Great roof top patio for sitting out when kids in bed. Nip up the hill for cheap and cheerful Jacks cafe or down the hill for Elliots at Monte Carveiro for wholesome portuguese menu, great for family. Owners helpful and organised which makes hiring a pleasure.

"A delightful villa, in a small, friendly complex, fab for families"
We have come back many times to this peaceful villa over the years, with our family of two sporty teenage boys and a young daughter, The villa is comfortable, friendly and well equipped (eg with a good selection of videos, DVDs and books). One of our favourite features is the patio outside the main bedroom upstairs with wonderful views all around, and hardly anyone overlooking us. We have had many a lovely breakfast and lunch up there - relaxing with a book, or admiring the view. The complex itself is pretty, and not too touristy. A couple of good tennis courts, a few swimming pools and some gentle children's & teenagers activities organised by the management team. There's a small supermarket on site, and a decent trattoria. A nice walk downhill into town, for meals or shopping (but uphill all the way back - good for burning off calories) Its not "fancy" or posh - and that's why we love it, Relaxed, friendly and perfect for families. And the english owners cannot do enough to help. I just hope it does not become too popular!!!
