The Algarve region
The Algarve coast, in the south of Portugal, is its best-known region for beaches, warm seas and all the ingredients for a good family holiday but other areas of this very friendly country are having increasing appeal. Two hours and 30 minutes flying from the UK opens up a country of mountains, plains and picturesque coastline.
The Algarve remains the top pick for British family holidays, mainly down to its consistently good beach resorts along a coast stretching from the Spanish border to Cape St Vincent. Families know that places such as Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Praia de Rocha and Lagos not only have sandy beaches but also safe bathing, good child-friendly restaurants and quality accommodation. In recent years more accommodation has been developed in the hinterland in the coastal mountains and offering cool higher altitudes and excellent views. It is here that holidaymakers can take a break from sunbathing with arts and crafts’ shopping at Loule or exploring the spa town of Monchique
While summer temperatures can reach 30C plus, the Atlantic breezes on the western and southern coasts make Portugal’s climate comfortable, especially for children. Like most tourist-orientated countries Portugal’s restaurants have adopted visitor tastes and many dishes on menus will be familiar, local cuisine makes much of sardines, tuna, anchovies and seafood.
Carvoeiro / Quinta do Paraiso area
Carvoeiro is a picturesque fishing village which still retains its local Portuguese character and charm. It is situated just 50 minutes along the main coast road West of Faro airport and is set in the hillside overlooking its own pretty beach dotted with fishing boats. There are several other beautiful beaches nearby such as Centianes and Benagil and the waters around Algar Secos rock formation are ideal for snorkelling. There are many local shops and minimarkets, a pharmacy, banks, doctors clinic, butchers, bakers, and newsagents, as well as a large Sainsburys style supermarket just outside the town.
Although small, Carvoeiro has many bars and restaurants, who all welcome children and offer children's menus. The town is fairly lively in the evenings, but remains an ideal place for couples or families alike, with restaurants for all tastes and pockets and plenty of friendly bars. There is also a small piazza called Monte Carvoeiro near to the complex with several restaurants where you can experience a stone steak, cooking your own steak on a hot stone. There are even 2 nightclubs for late birds or teenagers and taxis are easy to pick up from the taxi rank in the centre of the town.
Carvoeiro is within easy reach of Portimao with its harbour and famous sardine restaurants, the historic town of Silves, the Monchique mountains and 35 mins from Albufeira, the liveliest resort on the Algarve. Slide & Splash water park is 10 minutes drive and The Big One water park and the popular Zoo Marine with dolphin and seal shows are approximately 20 minutes drive.
There are two golf courses in Carvoeiro, Quinta do Gramacho and a 9 hole course on the Vale do Milho development. The championship course at Penina is a 20 minute drive, Vilamoura a 35 minute drive and Vale do Lobo a 40 minute drive. Tennis can be booked at the Quinta do Paraiso, Carvoeiro Club and Rocha Brava. Swimming, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are all available.
How to get there
Fly from most UK airports to Faro the main airport on the Algarve. The village of Carvoeiro is situated approximately 45 minutes drive from the airport. Car hire and taxis can be arranged through our local agent. Taxis is approx 50 euros each way.
