Location description from owner

The Yorkshire region

The Yorkshire Dales are one of the nost beautiful and unspoilt areas of Great Britain. They are in a National Park and Wensleydale is probably one of the most beautiful parts of the Dales. Both the Lake District and Whitby/York are possible to do as a day trip. The Tour de France is coming to the Yorkshire Dales July 2014 and will be passing within a mile of the Bothy. There are a myriad of places to visit, walks, places to eat etc.

West Burton

The area around the Bothy contains some of the most unspoilt and timeless scenery in the World. There is endless unspoilt river scenery including the spectacular Aysgarth Falls and the less well known Redmire Falls, both are a few fields away. The variety of wildlife/birds /wild flowers is one of the best in Britain.e.g kingfishers and otters inhabit the river behind the Bothy. There are stepping stone closeby crossing the river Ure to Bolton Castle and beyond. There are an endless choice of walks some of which are up Penhill where the views are awe inspiring. On Penhill there are Iron Age remains of settlements as well as ruins of a Knight's Templer chapel which is linked to some of the local Abbeys including Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx Abbey ,Byland and many more.
Salmon and trout fly fishing are available by special request. The best salmon pool lies behind the Bothy! There are some local iconic Dales villages like West Burton which is only a mile away where there is a local store, butchers and pub. There are a vast anount of different places to eat from the local pub to some of the top restaurants in the North of England .There are 2 local market towns nearby Leyburn (market on Friday ) and Hawes(market Tuesday). There is also a livestock market on those days. This is because traditional hill farnming continues in the Dales so it is a living landscape. Thousands of miles of stone walls are a key feature of the landscape as well as many stone field barns which are undeveloped and stand in many of the fields.Anyone coming to the dales will be inspired by it's uniqye beauty. Every dale is different and there are over 90 dales so if you decide to come you won't be bored. Other activities include biking, horse riding kayaking etc.
