The rivers 'Stour' and 'Nene' have been the back drop for many of John Constables paintings, red clay roof tiles tell of Dutch influence in local architecture. This beautiful countryside has become a tourist hot spot in recent years, with its abundance of historic, quirky flint-clad villages, and country market towns including Cambridge, Great Yarmouth, Sheringham and, of course, Wells-next-the-sea.
Taking its name from the abundance of ancient springs, Wells-next-the-sea boasts an idyllic location by the north sea surrounded by pine woods and salt marshes. This nationally acclaimed area of outstanding natural beauty includes a diverse range of countryside experience, all within walking distance of Harbour cottage. The popular family beach is just a few minutes walk away, the miniture train leaves to the beach from the playground just behind the cottage. Small amusment arcades, excellent fish shops, ice cream parlours and several fine pubs are just 2 minutes walk away from your door. Take a stroll down the old narrow streets, to find local restaraunts, traditional butchers, bakers, green grocers and artisan delis offering their wares. Wells also benefite from several supermarkets, a pharmacy, a cottage hospital with dialisis equipment, and a vets practice. The area has fine dining in the town or nearby, including the acclaimed michelin starred Morston Hall, and the world famous Cookies crab shop, open all year. With its a balance of countryside, gourmet food, stunning seascapes, and local ales, Wells is ideally suited for families, bird watching, walking, cycling, or just relaxing.
