La Bidonne is a beautiful old stone house perched on the side of the hill overlooking the valley with unforgettable views over the vineyards to the village of Saussignac with its chateau and church on the horizon. Approached along a quiet lane through the vineyards the house rests at the end of the road in its own private grounds. The house, which dates from the 16th century, has been sympathetically restored to include all modern amenities without detracting from its ancient charm and character.
La Bidonne is in the Comune of Gaegec et Rouillac. The village's stunning 12th century, family owned, fortified Chateau is a short walk from the house. The village is also the home of Patricia Atkinson, the award winning wine maker and author.
The main doors to the house open into a spacious double height salon with great timber pillars that reach up into the high roof beams. A period fireplace, solid oak floor and local stonework with antique Perigourdine furniture and large comfortable sofas make it a very welcoming room that is the heart of the house. There are 3 double bedrooms and a bathroom and shower on the ground floor and a further double bedroom with en-suite bathroom on the first floor. The large kitchen/dining room opens off a wide passageway that runs the width of the house.

The Dordogne region
The towns of Bergerac (15km) and Sainte Foy La Grande (10 km) are wonderful medieval market towns on the Dordogne and both have fine local markets and restaurants. There are many other places to visit, from St Emilion to the Lascaux caves and Roc Gageac where the Dordogne carves its way through a canyon and houses are built into the vast rock face. Historic castles and chateaux abound some with superb gardens including the famous 11th century chateau at Monbazillac. Nearly all the vineyards in the region will be only too pleased to welcome you into their ‘cave’ for a free wine tasting. Apart from the different local open markets there is a large Leclerc supermarket near Bergerac which has all you may need.
There are a number of local walks - Saussignac, for example, takes 15 to 20 minutes along an old Roman road through the vines. In Gageac there is the beautiful Chateau and the superb vineyard of Clos d'Yvigne, recently the subject of Patricia Atkinson's best selling book 'The Ripening Sun'. (Don't miss a tasting of her award winning wines!).
This part of France is a haven for wild birds. We regularly see a wide variety, from great buzzards to golden orioles, and at the right time of year the migration of thousands of storks overhead. Bring your binoculars with you! The fields around the house are full of wild flowers, orchids and butterflies, and, at night, glow-worms.
The area is very popular with cyclists as there are lots of quiet roads. There are also popular 1 to 3 day canoeing trips down the Dordogne with camping provided. Golf at Chateau de Vigiers is only a few miles away and may be followed by an excellent lunch or dinner in their restaurant. Tennis and horse riding are among the many other sports locally available.

"Perfect - Peace, calm and beauty in luxary - with lots of space and perfect pool for fun."
Our holiday in this beautiful home and garden was just perfect. The feeling of peace, calm and beauty which you get swimming in the fabulous pool and eating al fresco under the trees with a view of Saussignac cannot be beaten. Being able to walk into Saussugnac for bread (depot de pain), dinner or ice creams was a real plus for us. Walks to the surrounding vineyards to taste the local wine are great - although we needed our car to pick up all the wine we bought! We have spent many years searching for the perfect holiday house and believe we have at last found it. It ticked all the boxes necessary for really lovely family holiday where our 3 boys could play and dance and play music to their hearts content without disturbing anyone and we could relax and enjoy the countryside. The swimming pool and diving board are by far the best we have rented. The feeling of space around the pool with excellent views while you are swimming added to our enjoyment. The house and kitchen had all the comforts you might need though we were lucky enough to spend nearly every minute outside. We have no hesitation in recommending this holiday house.

"Beautiful house, gorgeous views and excellently positioned for local activities!"
We had a fabulous time staying at La Bidonne. The house itself is full of character and rustic charm and has plenty of space for 8. We also enjoyed the cool interior it offered when it was a bit too baking outside! The pool has a wonderful view of the nearby village and vineyards, so many relaxing hours were spent down there! The house is well equipped with everything you need and Bergerac / large supermarkets aren't far away. Also at hand is wine tasting and boulangeries for morning bread. The McMahon Turners were incredibly helpful and friendly and made booking and organising the trip an easy and pleasant experience. I'd highly recommend a stay here!

"Beautiful Villa in a stunning setting - Perfect..."
The villa " La Bidonne" is situated in a stunning area of French countryside, surrounded by vineyards and small picturesque villages. The villa's grounds are extremely large and well kept, with the stunning swimming pool overlooking fields, woods and the nearby village of Saussignac - which is only a short walk away where you can pick up fresh baguettes and pastries. Plus eat or have a drink in the friendly restaurant in the village square. The villa itself is beautiful, having been restored to a very high standard with loads of room for a large family or two...The airport at Bergerac is only 20 mins away and the town of Bergerac is worth a visit as it has bags of charm and places to visit. There are numerous vineyards nearby who welcome wine tasting visits as long as you prebook. The area is well serviced by amenities such as supermarkets and shops, plus the Dordogne river itself is very close where you can get involved in numerous activities, canoeing etc. We had a wonderful stay in La Bidonne and will treasure the memories of our holiday there and would definitely recommend a holiday there to anyone - Perfect......
