Why Dordogne?

This picturesque part of southern France is the epitome of laid-back rural life. Lush, green meadows, stone built houses, grand châteaus and sprawling vineyards cover this area, and many have likened it to a sunnier, larger version of the Cotswolds in the UK. The landscape is steeped in history: explore prehistoric caves, 12th century fortresses and much, much more.

So if it's a taste of traditional France you're looking for, why not book a rental in the Dordogne? Choose from cottages, villas, apartments and, of course, gorgeous French gîtes.

A rich history

There are so many fascinating historical places of interest in the Dordogne, it's impossible to list them all here. But to get you started, highlights include the painted caves in Lascaux. Although the original caves are no longer open to the public, the replica caves are an impressive sight indeed. Visit the Cave of Font-de-Gaume to see the ancient engravings and paintings or ride the electric train through the caves at Rouffignac.

If you want to get your children interested in French history, you'll find plenty of opportunities in the Dordogne. Head to Les Villages Bournat where you'll discover a working watermill, walnut press, fairground rides, wood carving, pottery making and dressing up. At Chateau de Bridoire, watch a jousting display or even have a go a firing a crossbow! And at Vezac, navigate your way through the maze of sculpted hedges and flowers. There's a children's play area and café on site, too.

Food & wine

Whether you're buying fresh bread from the local bakery or dining out in an elegant restaurant, you're in for a taste sensation. Specialites include cassoulet and confit de canard, and local produce such as ceps, figs and chestnuts, will leave you wanting more. One of the best things about booking a self-catering rental in the Dordogne is having your own kitchen where you can recreate French recipes using local produce. There are hundreds of markets taking place all over the region. Salat market is one of the biggest and runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Visit La Truffe Sarladaise in Vezac where you can buy walnuts, truffles, wine and more. Speaking of wine, a visit to the Dordogne isn't complete without a vineyard tour and there are many excellent options here.

Le Gite Peyre St Front

We stayed for 3 weeks in July/August - 3 generations and it was perfect! Gite has all we could need amazing pool and outside kitchen was so useful. Perfect location for exploring Perigord and all that it has to offer - which is a lot! Nice walk into the village for bars/bakery etc. Highly recommended see more

Wonderful Holiday, Perfect Location. Highly Recommend.

We had a wonderful holiday with our 4 children at Au Pret Vert in August. It was the perfect family holiday and made all the better by the owners, Kevin & Claire. They could not have been more helpful and made our stay one to remember. The Gites are very well designed and equipped with everything you need. The garden is a paradise for young and old with hours of fun had at the pool We enjoyed all the Dordogne region had to offer and would highly recommend these Gites to holiday in the Dordogne. see more
La Cote de Cor - Beautifully restored farm house 3 bedroom gite
Beautiful gite

We stayed here for a week end August/early September. Newly restored to a very high standard and extremely well equipped. Situated away from it all in a beautiful setting and an ideal base for exploring the Dordogne. Owned by a lovely couple who are always available to help if needed. Would not hesitate to recommend. see more
le précharmant - Périgourdine
A pretty clearing in beautiful chestnut and oak forest yet with town amenities in easy reach.

We found a small house with all amenities: two large bedrooms with well equipped en suite bathrooms. Beds very comfortable. I am a person who is sensitive to beds. No trouble sleeping here. Kitchen fully equipped. As the weather was awful it was a boon to have a washing machine to recycle warm clothes. Nicely kept grounds for our use and a swimming pool sadly not used because of the cold weather. Our 'landlady' a person full of energy: running two gites, and a young family with time to advise us on where to eat and places to visit as well as shops etc. From there we were able to visit other attractions in the Dordogne. Bergerac is a lovely little town. see more
Maison Metcalf
A great place for families or a group of friends

We enjoyed our stay very much. Our room was well equipped with a great shower, plenty of storage and comfortable bed. There is a large garden with pool and seating areas and space for children (or adults!) to play games. Also an indoor games room with table tennis and table football and a sitting room that guests can use. David and Lee were so helpful with ideas for good restaurants nearby and also suggestions of lovely places to visit (St Emillion, Aubterre sur Dronne and Brantome ) They also arranged canoeing for some of our group. see more

A fabulous area to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

We enjoyed the local area, walking the tracks around the gite. We also visited the local towns, exploring the architecture, enjoying good lunches in lovely shaded squares. A good day was finished with a swim in the heated pool, a lovely way to end a good day. … see more
