The Sicily region
Sicily is the southernmost region of Italy.
Sicily is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, and its capital is Palermo. It is the largest and the most densely populated island of the Mediterranean. It is one of the most important tourist destinations of Europe: in fact, in the eighteenth century, it was the last stop on the Grand Tour, the journey that young European aristocrats, mostly British, used to make in Europe, many in Italy, to improve their education and their spiritual formation.
The climate in Sicily is "Mediterranean", with hot summers and mild winters. Coastal Sicily has a subtropical climate, as it corresponds to climatic parameters of this type. The average annual temperature on the coast is at least 18° C and this fact explains the presence of sub-tropical vegetation which has perfectly adapted to most of the island, next to the native Mediterranean vegetation. Palm trees, bougainvillea and banana plants are plant species of tropical origin that abound in Sicily thanks to the mildness of its climate.
The island of Sicily has been visited for centuries by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. Each of these civilizations has left a mark on the culture, on the traditions and on the art of this beautiful region, with Greek temples, Roman mosaics and Arab and Norman buildings.
However, you can also find fascinating beauty almost everywhere: lovely coastline, picturesque villages, unspoiled nature and fashionable resorts, renowned wineries where you can taste excellent wine and authentic Sicilian cuisine.
In Sicily there is everything you could desire for your holiday!
If there is a place that has no "off-season," Sicily is one of these. A green island, rich in landscapes, art and culture. It is an island known for its beaches but also a destination for the spirit. Sicily, therefore, out of season is ideal to visit cities and places of art, to find gastronomic products without the pressure of crowds of tourists, to taste the new oils and cheeses, to eat good fish and to take advantage of a mild climate without the heat of the summer.
The list of typical products is very long. Each province (and in many cases, each town) has its own speciality. Sicilian "granita" is universally known. Less known but equally good is the "latte di mandorla" (almond milk), a drink that looks like milk but has the flavour of sweet almonds. Among the savory products there are "arancini" (rice balls) and "focacce" (durum wheat buns) with fillings made of parsley and tomatoes or cauliflower or other vegetables. There are many meals with aubergines, such as "caponata", "parmigiana" and "pasta alla norma". Even the fish, in many varieties, is an important ingredient of Sicilian cuisine: very famous in this area is the "tunnina a cipuddata" (tuna with onion) and "pesce spada alla Messinese" (swordfish with capers, olives and tomatoes). Typical of Trapani is couscous, main dish of the culinary tradition of the southern Mediterranean, which is prepared with both fish and meat. Among the sweets of the region we must not forget "cannoli", "cassata", "torrone" (nougat), most of these prepared with sweet almonds of Noto and pistacchio nuts of Bronte.
There are many places you need to visit and spend time in: Cefalu, Taormina and Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano (3,323 meters above sea level) near Catania in the north east of the island, the majestic monuments in the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, the beautiful Trapani area and Erice and the historic centres of Palermo and Catania .
On the eastern side of the island there is the Baroque architecture of Ragusa Ibla, Noto and Modica a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The house is ideally located at the centre of Noto and you can find bars, shops of all kinds and restaurants in the neighbourhood.
Recommended Bars: Caffè Sicilia in Noto, one of the best pastry shops and bars in Italy according to the Gambero Rosso Guide. Restaurants: Crocifisso; Dammuso Baglieri, Manna, Fontana d'Ercole, Marpessa, Il Cantuccio and the Lounge bar Anche gli Angeli (Noto).
Noto is located a little less than an hour's drive from the international airport of Catania, with cheap flights from all over Europe.
The beautiful baroque town of Noto is included in UNESCO World Heritage List, with the cathedral and its numerous palaces and churches, a triumph of Sicilian baroque, and it is described by the art historian Cesare Brandi as the "Garden of Stone". In every corner you can find baroque friezes, capitals, churches and noble palaces.
In Noto you should not miss: the characteristic procession of San Corrado, the Patron Saint of Noto, which occurs on February 19th and on the last Sunday of August; the religious traditions of Easter week; the Infiorata, a flower festival which occurs in third and fourth week of May.
Leaving the town behind, you can take the roads inland and go searcing for those intense flavors and aromas which give identity to this territory rich in culinary excellence, and great wines.
Noto is just 5 kms away from the beach of Lido di Noto, with its crystal clear waters, and a few kilometres from other sandy beaches among the most beautiful on the island, including the nearby Cala Mosche, Eloro, Marianelli, Marchesa, San Lorenzo, Cittadella, Portopalo, the island of Capo Passero and the “Isola della Correnti”. The famous Natural Reserve of Vendicari is a wonderful place where you can find unspoiled natural beauty, where in some seasons rare species of migratory birds nest which makes this an ideal place for bird-watching.
30 kms away is Siracusa, the capital of Magna Graecia, with the old center of Ortigia and its splendid archaelogical area and Greek Theater.
The surrounding area offers a variety of cultural attractions and other beautiful baroque towns: Modica, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla and Palazzolo Acreide.
There are also sanctuaries and the ruins of the ancient city of “Noto Antica”, the mosaics of “Villa del Tellaro” and the necropolis of Pantalica.
The caves and the gorges of Cava Grande of Cassibile are worth a visit with the small emerald lakes where you can swim and the river area of Valle dell'Anapo, with it's fish and fresh water crabs.
So, this is a good base to explore south-eastern Sicily, with its cities, Blue Flag beaches, trails and gorges, to visit the Greek and Roman ruins in the surrounding countryside or go to one of the wineries in the area.
The mild climate, the mountain paths, ancient villages, caves, churches and convents are unequalled.
I recommend that you spend at least two weeks' holiday in this part of Sicily. This will be just enough to be able to enjoy it's masterpieces and the unique and excellent cuisine and great wines.
