Description from owner

We are located in a small hamlet, close to Bergerac, rural but not isolated and very peaceful. As one guest described the cottage and setting: "an oasis of calm".

Set in the grounds of a beautiful Perigordian Chartreuse, La Petite Maison is a two room cottage built of honey-coloured stone under a tiled roof with lovely oak beams in the living area.

It is an ideal retreat for couples or families with young children. Perfect for getting away from the stresses of modern life.

The garden attracts abundant bird and wildlife, including birds rare to the UK, red squirrels, many beautiful butterflies and humming-bird moths. Wild flowers, including orchids as well as flowering trees and shrubs provide a colourful backdrop most of the year.

There is a good sized swimming pool 12 metres by 6. It is fully fenced with a security gate and although unheated, the solar blanket means that the water remains warm. We open the pool as soon as the weather permits, usually

There is a good sized swimming pool 12 metres by 6. It is fully fenced with a security gate and although unheated, the solar blanket means that the water remains warm. We open the pool as soon as the weather permits, usually from early May and put it to bed for winter in late October, though the main season is June to September. The pool is ideally placed to catch the maximum sunshine and is very private with views over the garden and surrounding countryside and woodlands.

We have a swing and slide set for small children as well as a selection of outdoor toys.

The area benefits from a very pleasant climate and although temperatures in the Dordogne in high summer can be very warm we usually benefit from a dry non humid heat.

The area is justifiably famous for its food, wine, cultural heritage and archaeological sites as well as having the world heritage city, Bordeaux nearby.

La Petite Maison is well placed for day trips and the choice of activities is only limited by what you enjoy. It is an ideal base for exploring the region or even house-hunting for your own dream cottage.

The rental rates quoted are for the cottage and include bedding, linen, bathroom and swimming towels.

Although the cottage can sleep four, we can only accept two adults and two children.

We can supply cots and other useful baby and toddler equipment, if pre-booked.

Further details

We will do our best to ensure you have a relaxing and memorable holiday and if you have any special requests please let us know and we will try to help.

The cottage is available for couples or families with small children.

Further details outdoors

There are tables, chairs, benches and sun loungers available and one of the great pleasures here is sitting outside, sampling one of the many Bergeracoise wines on a balmy evening looking at the stars through the clear skies. Because this is a rural hamlet, there is very little light pollution so visibility can be excellent. We find most guests eat their meals outside in the garden in the summer .The pool is very private, sheltered and in the sunniest part of the garden and has a solar heated shower. There are games available, such as boules and golf clubs can be borrowed. The outdoor parking area is within the fully fenced garden, near the cottage. The entrance to the property is through electrically operated gates. The English owners live in the main house and only use the pool when it is convenient for our guests.

Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

Steeped in history from the archaeological remains of earliest man around Lascaux to the world heritage site of Bordeaux; Aquitaine and the Dordogne region are rightly renowned.

The valley of the Dordogne is famous for its chateaux and formal gardens and some of France's most prestigious wines are produced from its vineyards.
There are numerous Bastides, grid layout medieval towns in excellent condition, as well as ancient churches and monasteries, monuments and markets.

The climate is pleasant with long hot summers, fine springs and autumns and bracing winters and long sunny summer days.

What are you waiting for?

The pretty market town of Bergerac has numerous restaurants and plentiful shopping as well as a lively market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

All around the area are wine trails and vineyards for tasting and buying. Bergerac has more different individual AOC wines than almost any other part of France, from the sweet white Monbazillac to the rich dark red Pecharmant and many in between to suit all tastes and moods. Many of the vineyards and cooperatives are open for tastings and will make visitors most welcome. Bliss!

There are plenty of sporting activities ranging from golf to canoeing, from karting to fishing as well as pleasant walking cycling and horse riding from local stables. Walking is a pleasure along marked trails throughout the region.

Pretty villages boast small auberges and restaurants and host interesting flea markets known as vide greniers (literally empty attics) and brocantes, antiques and collectables markets and stores abound. If you have the eye and are lucky you might star on the next antiques roadshow in your area.

There are frequent open air night markets in the summer with good selections of local foods and sometimes dancing in the streets at weekends in high summer.

Bergerac's Bastille day fireworks are superb and the open air restaurants and stalls make it a night to remember.

There are also discos and late night bars for the night owls among you.

The very popular Battle of Castillon is reenacted on certain weekends in July and August

As a young family we holidayed in the region over many years. We love it here, which is why we retired to this beautiful part of France. We are confident you will love it too and La Petite Maison is the perfect base to do so.

Truly a year round place to visit and return to again and again.

“Second time around...”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2016

Take no notice of the old saying "never go back" - we did and we were not disappointed. Three years have past since we first visited and Le Petite Maison is still the wonderful oasis it was before. The cottage has maintained all its charm and the peace and tranquility are still impossible to beat. The pool is wonderful and one of the best we have ever encountered on a holiday let. Rob and Liz provide the most superb unobtrusive hosting always on hand should you need anything but leaving you to your own devices. If you want peace and quiet and a chance to explore ancient villages and countryside we would have no hesitation in recommending a stay at Le Petite Maison.

Thank you for your very kind review. It is always a great pleasure to welcome previous guests and doubly so when they have had another good stay. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of France, slightly away from the hustle and bustle. It allows us to offer tranquil surroundings yet within reach of so much French history along the Dordogne Valley.

“Relax in idyllic surroundings”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2014

'La Petite maison' is beautifully situated on a hill with beautiful views over the valley. Around the house you have a lot of shade and sun spots. The spacious garden offers plenty of privacy and seating. The cottage is small, but very well equipped. There is a lot of baby equipment available! The mattresses seem what old, nevertheless, we slept well. The pool is clean and large. The cottage is located in a outdoor area, so you have to drive a bit further for the sights. Rob and Liz are very friendly and welcoming, perfect hosts. La Petite maison is a must if you want to relax in idyllic surroundings.

Thank you for your review and helpful comments. We were extremely disappointed at your comment regarding the mattresses as they are very high quality, pocket sprung and have only been used for the three summer seasons that we have been letting the cottage. We also ensure that they are covered with both waterproof under-sheets and quilted mattress covers to ensure they remain clean and hygienic. Perhaps the fact that they are mounted on sprung steel frames rather than divans affected your assessment.

“The perfect place to re-charge your batteries in beautiful surroundings”

Reviewed 20 Jul 2014

This is our second visit to La Petite Maison and we can't speak highly enough of it, spotless accommodation; equipped to a high standard; excellent hosts; informative and on hand if needs be, but otherwise you are left to your own devices. If you a seeking the chance to re-charge the batteries in beautiful surroundings we highly recommend it.

Thank you for your lovely review. We were very pleased to get another booking from you and to welcome you back here. We are always glad to see that our guests have been able to relax and unwind. It's what holidays are for, and why we try our best to ensure our guests get a peaceful and trouble-free stay.

“Second time around and twice as nice!”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2014

This was our second holiday at La Petite Maison following an extremely enjoyable stay last summer. Our expectations were once again realised and made all the much better due to the improved weather conditions. Rob and Liz were, as usual, excellent hosts, on hand if needed but unobtrusive otherwise. The high standard of the accommodation has been maintained and made for an memorable second visit. Still a good number of villages and attractions to explore so maybe another visit could be on the cards but if it's peace and quiet you require then this cottage fits the bill admirably and comes highly recommended..

We were really delighted when we received your repeat booking earlier this year and we are very pleased that you again enjoyed your stay with us. We hope all our guests will savour the peace and quiet that we have become accustomed to. It is nice to be reminded how lucky we are to be living here.

“A diamond in the Dordogne”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2013

Le Petite Maison provided us with a holiday to remember. From the moment of arrival to the all too soon departure day the whole experience was delightful with the ambience and tranquility overpowering. The facilities which included the wonderful pool made for a truly memorable stay. Rob and Liz are the perfect welcoming, unobtrusive, hosts with nothing being too much trouble, and on hand should you require help. We would have no hesitation in recommending wholeheartedly to others and we will return - the place is beautiful!

Thank you for your kind comments. We try to ensure that all our guests experience the tranquility that we enjoy and that they have pleasant memories that they can take away with them.

“The holiday that we wanted.”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2013

A lovely place for a truly relaxing holiday. After a long drive it was great to sit outside and unwind. The cottage is well equipped, spacious and comfortable. The swimming pool was superb and the use of the bikes greatly appreciated. Liz and Rob were the perfect hosts who left us to our own devices but were always there if we needed anything. We definitely recommend this cottage for anyone looking for a holiday in the Dordogne.

We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. It was great to see the pool giving a lot of pleasure, as it is one of our favourite features. We were impressed by your fitness levels, using the bikes nearly every day of your stay. Thank you for your kind review.

“Lived up to and beyond expectations!”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2013

We had a most delightful five days in La Petite Maison and our only disappointment was that our stay was not longer! It really is a beautiful place; not only the well appointed accommodation - finished to a very high standard, but the tranquility of the surroundings made it a real relaxing break for us. The owners are excellent hosts; on hand if you need them but otherwise they leave you to enjoy your stay. Plenty of information is available on the local area. Wonderful swimming pool which our teenage son made full use of. We will definitely return!

Thank you for your very generous review. As you probably gathered, we love it here and hope that our guests enjoy it as much as we do. We would be delighted if you choose to stay again.

“A gem of a holiday cottage.”

Reviewed 24 Jun 2013

We had high expectations of this holiday cottage from the description and previous reviews. Those expectations were exceeded in every respect. The cottage is very well appointed and equipped with quality linens, utensils and tableware. The peace and tranquillity of this cosy property with its superb swimming pool in the extensive grounds is unmatched whilst Bergerac with its mediaeval old town is just a few minutes drive. The owners, Rob and Liz, are excellent hosts who are totally unobtrusive yet readily on hand if required. If you are after a totally relaxing break in a stunning location then 'La Petite Maison' is highly recommended. Our two weeks passed far too quickly but we would hope to return in the future.

Thank you for your generous review. We are happy you enjoyed your stay and would be delighted if you were to return. We always think we are very fortunate to have found this home and its cottage and we are pleased when people make such complimentary remarks.

“...Fantastic location, lovely break”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2012

We opted for a minimoon after a hectic hotel based wedding and were lucky to find this gite at relatively short notice (2-3 months before hand). Quite simply, it was perfect. The location is spectacular with a lovely view. The gite is perfect for a couple/small family (most gites available are for 8-12 people and this made a refreshing alternative). There's a futon in the lounge/kitchen that could make a good option if a gite for four is needed. The grounds are well set, the pool luxurious, the gite clean and well accomodated. Most of all, our hosts, Rob & Liz, who are the only other people on the site, really did make us feel welcome and wanted whilst there still being plenty of space (there really is a lot, it's fenced, as is the pool). We had a little welcome pack that was a nice touch, as was the home grown squash, melon and other produce from a vegetable patch within the grounds. Readers will be pleased to hear that wireless connectivity has now been boosted from the main building - we had no issues. Directions from Bergerac airport were foolproof. We only had 5 days, and wanted more. We aim to go back to La Petit Maison and cannot recommend it highly enough. I know the area well and think you will be hard pushed to find better within this size, and for the price.

Thank you for your generous praise. We were delighted when we heard you had chosen our cottage for the short break after your wedding and pleased that we were able to make it the stay you were looking for. Best wishes to you both for a long and happy marriage.

“Highly recommended relaxing getaway”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2012

We have just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay at La Petite Maison. We had a fabulous time. The cottage was very clean and everything we needed was to hand including a good wifi service. Rob and Liz were the perfect hosts and were on hand for our every need but also left us to our own devices and welcomed us into their French lifestyle for the period of time that we were there. The pool was kept superbly clean and we cannot recommend this cottage enough for a rural break. The weather was fab and topped 41 degrees one day and 45 degrees the next day. The location was beautiful. A car is an essential and if you want a totally relaxing break then this is perfect for you.

We were very pleased to read your kind review. We always try to keep the cottage and its facilities and the pool as we would hope to find them if we were the guests.
