The Island of Gozo region

The Maltese archipelago consists of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino and is a relatively small group of islands in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea with a rich history accumulated over the centuries, thus offering the prospective visitor many varied places of interest and things to discover. Just over 90km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa, these islands have had various conquerors throughout the years, leaving behind them a mark in history.

Having a total population of around 400,000 people, Malta is the largest island. Gozo is the second largest and is 'greener' because it is more rural than Malta, where more crafts and traditions are still practiced among the inhabitants. Comino is mostly known for its Blue Lagoon, a crystal clear rocky beach and its other bays, one of which has of a nice four star hotel.

Enjoying sunny weather for the major part of the year, Gozo has a wide selection of different beaches and a laid back way of life. There are plenty of restaurants offering an exquisite and varied cuisine. With over 7,000 years of history, there is a great deal to see and do during your holiday in Gozo.

These islands have their own language – Maltese - which is based on Arabic but with various Italian and English loan words. English is also an official language and over 90% of the population talk and understand English very well. Italian is also spoken and understood widely. Malta joined the European Union as a full member in 2004 and adopted the Euro as its national currency in 2008.

Unique activities not to miss are the weekly village feasts in summer, the daily open market of Victoria held all throughout the year, the Carnival of Nadur in February and the Good Friday procession in a number of villages throughout Gozo.

Ghajnsielem

One can find a large number of beautiful sandy and rocky beaches all over the island of Gozo with a number of locations ideal for scuba diving and water sports. The Azure window, the Inland Sea, the Fungus Rock and the Dwejra watchtower, all located in Dwejra - a UNESCO World Heritage site -are all a must-see. Gozo has a very rich cultural heritage, which includes the 5000 year old Ggantija neolithic temples in Xaghra as well as the Victoria Citadel.

Gozo's cultural calendar is ongoing with exciting activities scheduled through the year. Theatre enthusiasts will be enthralled by the island's two theatres, the Aurora Opera House and the Astra Theatre, which have become synonymous with the various classical operas held there on a regular basis.

Meanwhile a blossoming art world is also emerging and several new galleries were inaugurated lately. Shopping lovers will feel at home in Gozo's main shopping street - Triq it-Tigrija, or Racecourse Street - in the capital, Victoria, or exploring the eclectic markets that take place in spots throughout the island.

Gozo is replete with scenic routes and vistas and is the ideal place to explore on foot or bicycle, where one can enjoy panoramic views over hills, valleys, the rugged coastline, cliffs and other places of natural beauty.

As in the rest of the Mediterranean region, good food is important to the Gozitans. The traditional diet is one of fresh produce, fish and olive oil, and today this is blended within an array of restaurants all over the island.

Popular food hotspots include Marsalforn, Xlendi and Victoria where there is a wide variety of eateries to suit every palette. Top class international cuisine, including Italian, French, Chinese and Indian food, is also on offer.

Don't let Gozo's tranquillity fool you – the island is also bubbling with plenty for night lovers too. The nightlife can be energetic and busy, especially on weekends and during summer, with several clubs and bars on hand whether you fancy something classic or buzzing. Unique hotspots can be found all over the island but many are concentrated in the Xlendi and Victoria areas.

Gozo's cultural calendar also ensures that there are many lively nights and the sprightly village feasts (complete with elaborate fireworks displays) dominate the summer months. Band music is also popular and each town or village has at least one band club which play during these 'festi' creating a vibrant aura of celebration and merriment through the streets.

“Private quiet location with stunning nearby vistas”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2015

We stayed in a ground floor apartment with private terrace. No real views from here but around the corner was a magnificent cliff top sea view where you could see for miles around across to Malta, Comino and a great place to see a perfect sunrise. The apartment was clean and modern and had everything you would expect. We rented the two bedroom apartment but there was only bedding for one room. It took another couple of days before we received bedding for the second room which we wanted to make use of also. We also had to pay for the apartment in full on arrival which we found unusual even after paying a deposit before we came to Gozo. Fort Chambray is situated in an isolated spot at the top of the hill and has great character. A car for travel is advisable. There are some lovely communal swimming pools within the complex. Overall, we had a fantastic time on the island of Gozo.

“Fantastic apartment and place to stay”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2015

The apartment had everything that we needed. The garden was a fantastic place to sit and relax. A couple of evenings we stayed in and had a barbecue and a takeaway. Even for the time of year the complex and pools had a relaxing atmosphere. Mario and Anna was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have booked again for next year.

We are pleased that you and your family enjoyed your stay at our apartment. We were thrilled that you liked it so much that you have already booked it for your two week holiday next year. We look forward to hosting you again in 2016!

“Gorgeous Apartment in such a peaceful environment”

Reviewed 19 Oct 2013

We rented the apartment from Mr.Mario Spiteri for our mini honeymoon break. May i say that the owner is such a pleasant, welcoming man and he even offered to collect us from the harbour himself. Booking was so easy and Mario was always readily available to reply to emails almost instantly. The apartment has a modern finish and set to very high standards and was very clean on our arrival. It is fully equipped with anything one might need. The apartment has its own outside garden with a fully functional BBQ, which allowed to make a lovely BBQ on a particular evening :) The apartment is located in a great area, close to all amenities. Its also just a 10 minute walk away from the harbour. The view from Fort Chambray street is so stunning, we could just sit on the benches for hours. The communal pool is also lovely and the whole area is wonderfully peaceful. We will surely return very soon :)

At the time of booking, we were very pleased that your choice to spend the first part of your honeymoon fell on our Fort Chambray apartment. This was the first time that we had honeymooners staying at this apartment. We are thrilled to read your very positive review and that you had an enjoyable and relaxing stay at our apartment. Whilst we wish you our very best for your future, we look forward to be able to host you again in the future.

“Fantastic accomodation in a stunning location”

Reviewed 16 Oct 2013

Travelled with husband and daughter who is 15 months and could not have asked for better accommodation. The apartment is furnished to a very high standard and was spotlessly clean on our arrival. A welcome pack of bread milk etc was also very much appreciated since we arrived late in the evening and this saved us going to the supermarket early in the morning! The apartment has its own outside patio area which is enclosed and a great area for young children to run around etc Mario the owner collected us from the airport which was great and made getting there that much easier and less stressful. The apartment is located in a great location for exploring Gozo, we hired a car for a few days and also used the buses. Great beaches, nice pool and fantastic weather, around 28 degrees most days. Lovely places to eat not far from the apartment (say 10 minute walk), can recommend Rexy who even do takeaway pizza etc which was quite handy when we did not want to go out! Would love to return one day to this fantastic island

We are very pleased to have been able to host you at our Fort Chambray apartment. Whilst we thank you for your very positive review, we look forward to be able to host you again should you decide to return for another stay in Gozo in the future.

“Fantastic”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2013

We would like to thank Anna for meeting us at the Harbour firstly and secondly for all the goodies we found in the apartment, Tea, Coffee, Bread, Milk, Butter etc and especially the wine thank you so very much, we had a wonderful stay in Fort Chambray - the apartment had everything including a washing machine I was able to take all my things home clean, how good is that. We are hoping to come again next year and would recommend Mario & Anna's apartment.

We are delighted with your review. We know you have visited Gozo many times before and also have many friends who reside here. It would therefore give us immense pleasure to be able to host you again at our Fort Chambray apartment in the future.

“A stylish apartment in a lovely setting.”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2013

A well finished, comfortable apartment with everything you could need. Useful outside terrace space attached to the apartment and two peaceful public pool areas. The apartment was easily accessible from the ferry, with well priced, good restaurants and supermarkets 10 mins walk away from the complex. Mario, the owner was extremely helpful giving lots of helpful information about the area. Lots of opportunities for scuba diving for the beginner or experienced diver. One of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had.

We are delighted that you have enjoyed your stay at our apartment. We look forward to be able to host you again at Fort Chambray in future.

We have just enjoyed a very relaxing and peaceful weeks stay at Fort Chambray, the apartment was lovely, modern and very clean and in a perfect location, the pool area is stunning with lovely views over the harbour.

We are very pleased to know that you had a wonderful, relaxing and peaceful stay at our apartment at Fort Chambray and would look forward to host you again in the future.

“Beautiful setting fantastic views”

Reviewed 28 May 2013

Very peaceful holiday in the perfect setting with stunning views and beautiful pools. Apartment was lovely ( not the best bed and a shortage of bed linen ) however it wouldn't stop us from returning the best holiday we have had. Anna met us off the ferry and the communication from Mario pre visit was excellent.

We are pleased that you have enjoyed your stay in Fort Chambray. Regarding the bed, we are actively seeking to replace the existing fully orthopaedic mattress, which some people may find a little bit rigid, with a semi-orthpaedic one. We look forward to be able to host you again in Fort Chambray in the future.

“Unforgettable for all the right reasons...”

Reviewed 28 Jan 2013

From the first moment we contacted Mario, we felt instantly at ease and confident that a stay in his apartment would be everything we could hope for. I was looking for an apartment which would suit myself, my husband, my 3 year old daughter and 76 year old mother and what we found well exceeded expectations. It was beautifully furnished with two stunning bedrooms, a good sized kitchen with lovely open plan living area plus a luxury bathroom. We also had wifi and full air conditioning as standard, which was essential given the very hot summer. The bonus factor with Mario's apartment was the wrap around outside patio and garden area which came complete with bar-b-cue and sun-loungers. As for the resort, words can't possibly describe how stunning this is. Location wise, Fort Chambray is 10 minutes walk (up hill) from Mgarr Harbour port and is a restored fort currently undergoing further redevelopment after the initial phased building work. This is NOT a building site! Fort Chambray as it stands is the most incredible development with several swimming pools all accessible from any apartment within a minute or two. The main pool itself is, I believe, the largest in Gozo and has the most beautiful setting. Fort Chambray overlooks Comino with Malta in the distance and the view is one you can never get tired of gazing at. A wedding party came to have their photographs taken so that should speak for itself. Mario was a fabulous host and after meeting us at the airport, he brought us to the apartment which was stocked with food and water and furnished with books and a useful information/welcome pack. Once we were settled, we were able to explore our surroundings and we found this quite easy, even though we didn't have a car. People with mobility issues may find Fort Chambray slightly out of the way but we managed very well, walking to the local village (Ghajnsielem) most evenings and even during the high heat of the day though this is not recommended to those wiser than ourselves! Most of the apartments at Fort Chambray are privately owned and at times we had the pool to ourselves. This really felt like it was 'our' holiday - very quiet and leisurely. We took a bus tour round the island during our stay and can honestly say that it confirmed the wisdom of our choice in Fort Chambray. At night, we usually ate at one of Ghajnsielems lively restaurants near the stunning church. The whole town came alive as locals aged it seemed, from one to one hundred, dined, talked or danced the night away. All in all, it was a fabulous holiday and all 3 generations of our family enjoyed the experience so much that we truly regretted having to leave and won't even consider staying anywhere else, should we return in the future.

“Beautiful island, impressive and stylish place”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2012

Mario's apartment in Fort Chambray was great, and the Fort Chambray complex is very stylish, although it was very quiet when we were there during October. We imagine in the summer season, it would be a fair bit busier. Mario and Anna were very helpful, with Anna meeting us personally at the Gozo ferry and making sure we were fully settled in. You're not far from anywhere in Gozo so it's easy to explore the island, and even trips over to the main Malta island don't take long. Very nice, relaxing holiday.
