Location description from owner

The Isle of Purbeck region

The county of Dorset boasts diverse and intriguing natural and cultural histories dating back to prehistoric times. Whilst evidence of the dinosaurs who roamed subtropical forests abound in the county's geology might be attractive to modern day fossil hunters, others may romance in the delights of 'Hardy Country', exploring the beautiful landscapes portrayed in many of the author's classic novels. For some, the allure of the millionaire lifestyles enjoyed by the inhabitants of Sandbanks might call, or perhaps, the simpler pleasures held by the region's many sandy beaches are more appealing. The major towns of Poole, Bournemouth, Dorchester and Weymouth provide a host of amenities and opportunities for leisure activities whilst quieter resorts and towns such as Swanage, Lyme Regis, Shafetesbury, Wareham and Bridport all offer their own particular charms to those who wish to explore. With its coastline having been designated a World Heritage site, The Jurassic Coast fringes many areas of outstanding natural beauty, each with its own character and notoriety. From low-lying heathland to dramatic cliffs and pristine, sandy beaches, the scenery changes endlessly to nurture a wealth of flora and fauna, enchanting and inspire its visitors to return time and time again.

Corfe Castle

The Isle of Purbeck is a part of Dorset which roughly encompasses the area east of Lulworth Cove to Shell Bay, at the mouth of Poole harbour, to the small market town of Wareham at the northern reaches of Poole harbour. The beauty of this world-renowned coast line is unsurpassed and vistors who venture a short distance inland will be enthralled by what the Isle of Purbeck has to offer them. Dominated by the majestic Purbeck Hills, its gently rolling landscape has provided shelter and sustenance for mankind over thousands of years. Today, this beautiful area is dotted with quaint villages comprising cottages built from the locally quarried Purbeck limestone, giving them their unique character and charm. The village of Corfe Castle, named after the ruined fortress which stands proud at its gateway is the largest and most populous of these such settlements. Within its bounds, you will find four traditional English pubs, a superb bakery, a delicatessen/general store and a post office. The Swanage Steam Railway operates from the station within the village and, of course, the castle itself is a fantastic visitor attraction. Walkers and cyclists alike will rejoice in the ready accessibility from the village of numerous routes into the picturesque hills and vales. The traditional sea-side resort of Swanage with its variety of amenities is a short 5 mile ride away. The scope for nature lovers to indulge their interest is endless, whether it be: dolphin watching from the cliffs of Durlston Country Park; watching the migrations of bird life at Poole harbour; surveying the landscape for mammals such as Sika deer or, indeed, reptilian life which is indigenous to the area's heathlands. All in all, the Isle of Purbeck offers something for everyone.

“Beautiful cottage in great location”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2013

Three generations of us stayed at Wissett Cottage and we all loved it. It's a beautiful character cottage, spacious, tastefully furnished and very comfortable. It has a well equipped kitchen for us to cook our own meals but is close to pubs and restaurants for eating out. The owners have taken a lot of care to provide information and tips about the area. For a cottage the stairs are quite wide, which meant that my 83-year old mum could cope easily with them. Its central location in Corfe Castle is ideal for exploring this beautiful part of the country.

“Brilliant”

Lovely cottage in idyllic situation, well-appointed, couldn't be better. The location is lovely with access to surrounding countryside including Corfe Castle and Wareham. The family friendly seaside resort of Swanage is about 15 minutes away

“Beautiful cottage in perfect location”

Reviewed 27 Mar 2013

This was our second stay at Wissett Cottage, this time with a toddler, a young baby and a Granny in tow. Both times we found the property spacious, yet cosy in the colder evenings. The kitchen was modern and well stocked with every utensil we could possibly have needed. The rest of the house retains its period features but with subtle modernisation to provide all the necessary 'creature comforts.' The setting is simply perfect - within short walking distance of the centre of Corfe Castle where a couple of shops provide the essentials (and more), a few pubs and gift shops and the National Trust shop. The view of the castle itself from outside the cottage is quite breath-taking. We spent most days in Swanage where we had family staying - only a 10 minute car drive away. I think we could have easily caught the bus - there's a fairly regular service from Corfe. All in all, this was a great location and property for a family holiday - whether we wanted to stay in and make use of the TV/board games, or go out and about to explore the local area.
