The Palais Garnier is the French capital’s iconic opera house that seats almost 2,000 people. Situated in Paris’ culturally thriving 9th arrondissement, the building is as much an architectural symbol of Paris as the Louvre or the Musée d'Orsay. It’s rightly considered a 19th century masterpiece, even within a city not short of architectural wonders.
It’s often speculated that Palais Garnier is the most famous opera house in the world, so much so that many refer to it as Opéra Garnier, Paris Opera or, simply, The Opera. The theatre provided the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, and was further popularised by Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical of the same name.
However, the Paris National Opera is no longer based here - instead they perform at the Opéra Bastille. So why not pop in when visiting Paris? Especially as there's now world-class ballet on offer at the Palais Garnier, not to mention some outstanding opera.
