Cinque Terre holidays

The area of Cinque Terre along the coast of Italy includes five ancient villages that have been cut off from the rest of the world for centuries by mountains. As a result of their seclusion, the villages have developed unique cultures and farming practises, and the entire area has now been recognised as a Unesco World Heritage site. The villages, farms and stone walled olive groves of the Cinque Terre, including some remarkable terraced vineyards perched on cliffs above sea, have also been designated as a National Park.

Restaurants and stores in the villages are open during most of the year, but there are no cars allowed here, so most transportation occurs by foot or by electric buses.

Here are a few of the best ways to experience Cinque Terre:

  • Hike the trails: Some of the most popular hiking and walking trails in Cinque Terre include the Via dell'Amore and the Blue Trekking Trail. These paths will lead you along the rocky coastline and up to breathtaking elevations with views of the vineyards, ocean and terraced hills.
  • Visit Our Lady of the Salvation: If possible, see this baroque parish church around Christmas when it is ablaze with warm, dazzling lights. The structure was built in 1338 and is now a preserved historic site.
  • Take a boat tour: Take an eco-tour, history tour or scenic relaxing glide along the Levante Riviera. This is the best way to explore the natural marine beauty of Cinque Terre and see some of the area's important sites from a new perspective.
  • Visit the Church of San Francesco: An art museum as much as an architectural site, the church was built in 1632 on the site of an older structure and now houses some masterpiece paintings and triptychs by Van Dyck, Flasella, and Domenico Gare.
  • Visit the Dawn Tower: The Dawn Tower, or Aurora Tower, separates the old and new areas of Monterosso. Climb to the top for beautiful views of Monterosso and Fegina.
  • Take an Italian cooking class: After sampling the culinary treasures of the restaurants in Cinque Terre, you may want to find a way to bring these flavours and traditions home with you.

It is usually easy to find a holiday rental available in Cinque Terre, especially during the summer months. You're likely to find a perfect villa, small apartment or condo for rent along the winding streets of Vernazza or Riomaggiore.

THE MAGPIE'S NEST
The best place to stay in Cinque Terre

My wife and I just spent three nights at Alessandra's IL NIDO DELLA GAZZA in Monterosso. We absolutely loved our stay. The location of the property is great for those that want to have both privacy and easy accessibility. It is just a short walk up the steps in the middle of the new town taking you away from the hustle and bustle but from the time you leave your front door, in less than five minutes you are right on the main drag (<10 mins to the train station). The patio and garden are perfect for enjoying the early morning and late afternoons and you have a very good view. Accomodations in the house are excellent as well with all the amenities (washing machine, hair dryer, wireless, maps, books, condiments, etc.) available. The sitting room is spacious and comfortable with a good size dining table. The bedroom was plenty big with a comfortable bed. Alessandra greets you at the propert and gets you all set up. You should also stop by her shop in the old town. We absolutely will stay here the next time we return to the Cinque Terresee more
Shark Room - Leo's Lodge - The heart of Cinque Terre
The best place to stay in Cinque Terre

I had originally planned to come to the Cinque Terre about a week later than I actually did. My plan was to stay in Vernazza as my slow down part of my trip and then I heard about an amazing place to stay called The Heart of Cinque Terre. One of my mom’s friends had just stayed there and said it was beyond amazing. It is literally the only room that you can rent in the Cinque Terre National Park. There are plenty of rooms in the five towns of the Cinque Terre, but there’s definitely nothing like the room I found. I heard it was quiet at night with beautiful views over the water. Seriously, look at this view: Cinque Terre I decided it was a true experience that very few people get to live locally with a view like this at an amazing price, so it was time to reschedule my trip. I cancelled my segment through southern France and decided to plan on extra time in Italy. It was an excellent choice although I made a very stupid mistake my first day by not respecting the hills, heat, and weight I’d be carrying to get there. That said, this was an amazing place to stay. Upon arriving at Heart of Cinque Terre, I was greeted by Pierpaolo, the amazingly nice and generous owner. I arrived starving and thirsty and enjoyed drinking the cold spring water he had on site, which he also offered to hikers passing through. He told me the kitchen was stocked with some things left by previous travelers and I found some good pasta and tomato sauce. I whipped that up and it was appropriately delicious. However, Pierpaolo now told me about the olive oil that he made himself. There was a bottle of it in the kitchen and Pierpaolo told me I could have as much as I wanted. I had some left over pasta, so I threw that together with some olive oil and salt and pepper and wow… Spain2013-369 It’s amazing how good those simple meals can be with a few really good ingredients. This meal strongly influenced what I ate the rest of the time in the Cinque Terre. Pierpaolo was kind enough to drive me into town so I could do some grocery shopping, so I loaded up on fresh produce, excellent sliced cheese and meats, and some delicious bread that was really just another excuse to mop up more olive oil. That’s pretty much what I ate for a couple days outside of one meal in Vernazza and it was great! Heart of Cinque Terre The experience of staying at Heart of Cinque Terre was perfect for me since I was tired from traveling a little too fast and needing some quiet time. You are about a mile from any kind of city life. Obviously, if you were planning to go out in the evenings, then you need to get a taxi. For me, sitting back an enjoying the sunsets, the peace and quiet, and the cool evening breezes was all I could ask for. Pierpaolo was an amazingly gracious host and really goes out of his way to make you feel at home. As long as you’re fine with being away from the cities for a few days, Heart of Cinque Terre gets my highest recommendation. Additional Note: If you’re really traveling on the cheap or just want a unique experience, Pierpaolo also sometimes allows people to work for their stay. At times, he needs extra help for preparing olive oil and working in the garden and that can be arranged to pay for your stay. If you’re interested contact him through his web site. I paid for my own room and my review comes straight from the heart.see more
Seaview apartment in the old town
Fabulous stay - my favorite thru entire month in Italy!

Fabulous spot - great location, quiet, spacious and very clean 2-bedroom suite with well equipped kitchen, we could have held a dinner party!! Loved the deck with view of bell tower and the water, we sat out for leisurely breakfasts then later to sip wine and watch the sunset. The washer and sunny clothesline was a real bonus! Davide was very helpful with information while planning our stay. Brother Alessio met us at the train to show us our way to the suite, that was very much appreciated! I look forward to another visit in the future and would plan to stay here for 1-2 weeks if possible. Many thanks to Davide and Alessio for a fabulous stay in Monterosso, my favorite of our entire trip!see more
