Azores holidays

Azores, Portugal

Sitting alone in the vast Atlantic Ocean, the Azores could best be described as Europe’s answer to Hawaii. Volcanic in origin, the nine-island archipelago is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts and beach lovers. For all your accommodation needs in the Azores, search Holiday Lettings where you will find a huge selection of beautiful rental homes in perfect locations to choose from.

About Azores, Portugal

First settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century, today the Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal.

Besides speaking Portuguese and adopting the Euro as the island's currency, the people of the Azores are used to a slow pace of life and seem in no hurry to change. A large part of this is due to the island's location—932 miles west of Portugal and 2,485 miles east of New York. Up until recently, the only way to visit the Azores was an expensive flight from Lisbon or as a stopover on a transatlantic sailboat voyage.

With a loosening of airline competition throughout Europe, that is all about to change with affordable airlines Ryanair and EasyJet starting a daily service from Lisbon and Porto to João Paulo II Airport, Ponta Delgada.

What to do in the Azores

Portugal has 15 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and Azores is home to two of them. There’s the historic Old Town of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira and the stunning vineyards of Pico.

Big game fishing is as good as you will find anywhere on the planet with white marlin, bluefin tuna, bigeye tuna, longfin tuna (albacore), yellowfin tuna mako shark, swordfish, wahoo, dorado and giant blue marlin all present in Azorean waters. Whether you have experience in deep sea fishing or you’re a complete novice, you’ll be able to try your hand at it.

With very few good surfing destinations to choose from in Europe, the Azores—with their year-round swells and warm water—are a good reason to grab your board and head to São Miguel. You’ll find several surf schools and outfitters here.

Hiking and mountain biking is popular in the Azores with a trip to the volcanic lakes at Sete Cidades a must-see for any tourist. The same must be said for the geothermal pools that heat up the ocean water like a warm bath. It’s as unique a swimming location as you could hope to find!

Top travel tips for the Azores

Tourism in the Azores is geared towards the summer months, where temperatures average 75F. In the winter they drop to around 55F. The weather generally is influenced by Atlantic storms which mean it can go from sunny to rainy and back to sunny the same day.

The best way to get between the islands is to fly using an Azores Air Pass. A more scenic approach is to take a regular ferry—you might spot some migrating whales. The best months are between May and July. Be sure to try the local wine and bring back some tea from Europe’s only commercial tea plantation.

Visiting the Azores is almost like stepping back in time due to its inaccessibility, but now with budget airfares available, that could be about to change. With limited accommodation available, the best place to stay is in your own rental property. Start searching the great options available here on Holiday Lettings. You won’t be disappointed!

Family House | Garden | Ponta Delgada
Lovely house. Great Location. Exceptional hospitality

Lovely house with plenty of space for the whole family. All of the amenities we needed. Located in town, but not downtown, easy walk to the water, and 15 minutes walk to downtown, or 5 minute drive. Store on the same block, and plenty of parking. Carlos, the owner, could not have been more helpful, plenty of suggestions of restaurants and sites, he even took me to pay a parking ticket. I would recommend this to anyone, and plan to return.see more
LOVELY HOUSE the best find
Warm hospitality at a lovely cottage in the heights of Biscoitos

Lovely spacious cottage, decorated with creative flair by Hugo, the very hospitable owner. In a beautiful setting on the slopes of Biscoitos. Lots of greenery around, and though there are other houses all around, it is very quiet. The natural volcanic swimming pools at Biscoitos are great. … see more
The Penthouse, Ponta Delgada
Outstanding accommodations in the perfect location

My family I just came back from 10 days at this beautiful penthouse apartment. The apartment was within walking distance to everything. It was bright , clean , and allowed enough space for everyone. The suite upstairs was perfect. The view from the balcony is amazing. We enjoyed family meals on the balcony. Chris was available and came right over when we send him a message that one of the bathtubs was not draining well. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and the gas grill on the balcony was perfect. The only thing I would say is that the pots and pans could be updated. One small frying pan was difficult for cooking breakfast for a family. We will definitely book again and already have other family and friends asking for the contact. Having parking in the parking g garage was a great bonus. The pictures were taken on the balcony that overlooks the marina, city, and nearby villages. Perfect vacation. Thank yousee more
Cycas's House - Ponta Delgada Downtown
Beautiful house in an excellent location

This is in a great location, a short walk to the restaurants, shops and other amenities and even somewhere to park your car if you hire one yet away from the main town which can be noisy and parking not easy. We absolutely loved this house which the pictures do not do it justice and the garden an absolute treasure with many amazing trees, birds and even the odd butterfly - we wished for more comfortable outside seating though to while away a couple of hours and eat outdoors. It has all the facilities you would need for a longer stay, although we mainly made use of the local restaurants and cafes for meals, the washing machine came in handy after getting soaked on walks and it was lovely to be able to come back to a spacious house. The mattresses were on the very firm side although I guess this is a case of personal preference. An excellent base when staying in Ponta Delgada and exploring the wider island.see more
Apartment Fully Equipped Near Beach
Perfect location near to many spots on the island

José is a wonderful host who provided us with a lot of useful information where to go to. The accommodation is a little bit humid, but perfectly appropriate for a one week's stay. The only problem with children then is that you do not have a separate room for sleeping. We had the chance to participate in a special dinner event where José's wife cooked a wonderful dinner and a friend of the family served the wine from the Porto region. Really great! Despite the perfect location you need a rental car to get to see most of the island, as public transportation is not that good.see more
Marina Mar Vila Franca do Campo
So lovely and relaxing

Very spacious apartment in an excellent location on the lovely island of Sao Miguel. We did find the beds to be far too firm though and everywhere smelt very fusty, probably due to the constant humidity over there. … see more
