Sunny & idyllic Le Phénix, fantastic views, big luminous garden, private pool
A relaxing getaway
We stayed here for a week and found it a comfortable and cosy base from which to explore the broader Midi Pyrenees, though the more interesting parts of the region are not on the doorstep. The sound of the crickets was all that disturbed the night air and there was a pleasant view of the valley from the front door. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen area contained everything needed for a self-sufficient stay.
A map, as well as the written directions, would have been useful as it is a bit out of the way and difficult to find. A nice place to stay if you are in the area. …
Stunning view from cosy L'Hermite. Perfect hideaway in paradise, private pool
Wish we were still there
L'Hermite is one of three attractive cottages, known as Maisonneuve, all owned by the same friendly and welcoming lady. They are about 1.5 miles outside the village of Thenon (shops, weekly market and supermarket). The conversion of the cottages has been done very cleverly so that none of them has a pool or sunbathing area overlooked by any of the others. Though they are clustered together, there is no problem with lack of privacy or disturbance.
L'Hermite is the oldest of the three and has thick stone walls, so it is cool inside even on the hottest day, and splendid wooden beams in several of the rooms. It is comfortably furnished, with several attractive and distinctive features. The view from the terrace and pool is over a valley with fields and woods. We enjoyed watching eagles and swallows wheeling overhead. The only disturbance to the peace and quiet were the crowing cocks on farms nearby and the cicadas in the fields. On a quiet Sunday morning, we could even hear the church bells from the village.
The area, Perigord Noir, is beautiful, with rolling hills and dense mixed woodland, teeming with wildlife: red squirrels, deer and wild boar. There are masses of places to visit, with castles, gardens, caves and medieval towns and villages. Food markets and restaurants were a constant temptation. We were torn between lazing on the terrace and exploring the area.
Just a couple of points to note about the cottage:
1. As often in France, the bathroom and loo are downstairs, as is the nicest bedroom; the stairs to the other bedrooms are steep and would be difficult for small children and some older people.
2. The oven is one of those combined oven/grill/microwave devices. It served us perfectly well but would be no good for ambitious cooking.
We thoroughly enjoyed our fortnight at L'Hermite and would happily recommend it to others. …
Panoramic views from enchanting and peaceful Le Tournant. Private pool
A great location with a beautiful south facing view across a small rural valley.
A great location with a beautiful south facing view across a small rural valley. An easy place to spend your time just watching the swallows and the kites fly by. You will need a car for shops and there are only limited number of restaurants locally. However local supermarket is only 10 mins away and had everything we needed need - including cheap fuel. An easy location to get to as motorway is nearby and a good base to explore the Dordogne area. You should be aware that there are 3 properties on site. We had however absolutely no issues with this during our stay as each property has a reasonable amount of private space and there is amble parking. …
