Location description from owner
The Dordogne region
The property is just 2 miles from the sleepy village of Thenon, where you will find a bakery, supermarket, post office and a bank as well as a variety of restaurants serving traditional local dishes. But despite the quiet surroundings, we are ideally situated for all the main tourist sites. A short drive will take you to the famous medieval town of Sarlat, the caves at Les Eyzies and Montignac, walk the cobbled streets of the ancient Roman city of Perigueux or visit one of the many chateaux near Beynac and Domme. For the more adventurous, take a canoe trip down the beautiful River Vezere or enjoy the views from the skies in a hot air balloon. And at the end of a long day site seeing, relax in what is quite possibly one of the most tranquil places on earth. Known as the land of 1000 chateaux and the birth place of modern man, the Dordogne is a truly magical place. We hope to see you soon.
Our three beautifully restored, traditional French cottage are situated at the top of a hill and all offer breathtaking views of the countryside below. “Wish we were still there”
L'Hermite is one of three attractive cottages, known as Maisonneuve, all owned by the same friendly and welcoming lady. They are about 1.5 miles outside the village of Thenon (shops, weekly market and supermarket). The conversion of the cottages has been done very cleverly so that none of them has a pool or sunbathing area overlooked by any of the others. Though they are clustered together, there is no problem with lack of privacy or disturbance. L'Hermite is the oldest of the three and has thick stone walls, so it is cool inside even on the hottest day, and splendid wooden beams in several of the rooms. It is comfortably furnished, with several attractive and distinctive features. The view from the terrace and pool is over a valley with fields and woods. We enjoyed watching eagles and swallows wheeling overhead. The only disturbance to the peace and quiet were the crowing cocks on farms nearby and the cicadas in the fields. On a quiet Sunday morning, we could even hear the church bells from the village. The area, Perigord Noir, is beautiful, with rolling hills and dense mixed woodland, teeming with wildlife: red squirrels, deer and wild boar. There are masses of places to visit, with castles, gardens, caves and medieval towns and villages. Food markets and restaurants were a constant temptation. We were torn between lazing on the terrace and exploring the area. Just a couple of points to note about the cottage: 1. As often in France, the bathroom and loo are downstairs, as is the nicest bedroom; the stairs to the other bedrooms are steep and would be difficult for small children and some older people. 2. The oven is one of those combined oven/grill/microwave devices. It served us perfectly well but would be no good for ambitious cooking. We thoroughly enjoyed our fortnight at L'Hermite and would happily recommend it to others.
Thank you very much for your positive words. If you like the sound of nature; in another period of the year you can enjoy the enchanting nightingales as well.
My daughter and I had the delight to arrive at L'Hermite after a late decision to visit the Dordogne. Our host could not have been more helpful. Her gentle presence is all around and yet unobtrusive. It is a stunning location and we were fortunate to have warm sunshine each day. For complete relaxation I would highly recommend.
You were very lucky this week was left, because the indian summer in this surrounding attracts many. But -like you imagined - the atmosphere at the location doesn't stick to seasons. I look forward to welcome you again.
“A holiday to rememeber”
If you want to relax, have me time and quality time this is the place for you. The cottage we stayed in is the smaller 1 but sleeps 6 it was very French and fully equipped. we meet the owner and she was so helpful and lovely lady. The views are to dye for, as is the surrounding area.. The small lake which is only 20 mins walk from cottage which has a restaurant, is very friendly and very French, worth a visit. Airport is only 1 hour 15 mins drive away. Montignac is a wonderful place to go,well I could go on and on. I would say it was one of the very best holidays we have had and we are already thinking about going back. This is the 1st time I have done review it was that good.
I am very happy you enjoyed your stay. I agree, the peaceful and quiet place is a balm for body and soul. It will be my pleasure as well to welcome again. You know you can rent one of the other two cottages as well when you might think of bringing the rest of your family next time?
