Situated in the quiet rural peninsula of Waternish in the North-West of Skye, Lusta Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the region, or just relaxing. Enjoy just sitting and watching the weather change from the conservatory with its spectacular sea views. Take time to explore our wonderful croft - 17 acres of grassland including ruins of the old croft cottage and outbuildings, the steepsided gorge with the burn running down it, leading to numerous waterfalls. Walk through the gate at the bottom of the croft, and a short walk along the beach will bring you to the historic village of Stein, boasting the 18th century Stein Inn and the renowned Loch Bay Seafood restaurant.

Electricity - Please turn off radiators/towel rails when not required – electricity on Skye is very expensive but we would like to maintain our policy of not charging separately for heating to keep the letting process as free from admin as possible for you. Pets - Well-behaved dogs (maximum of two) are welcome by prior arrangement at a charge of £25 per week per dog. No other pets allowed without prior permission.Please do not let your dog on any furniture/chairs/beds and provide your own dog bedding. A dog stainless steel water bowl is stored under the sink in the kitchen.Dogs must not be left in the property unsupervised as this can result in considerable damage to the property and distress to the pet.The inner garden (approx. 0.25 acre) is sheep fenced and with all three gates shut is safe for most dogs. However, the actual croft land (approx. 17 acres) outside the garden fence ususally supports a herd of rare Hebridean sheep. You are welcome to walk your dogs here but please keep them on leads well away from the sheep. Please ensure you pick up any dog mess from the inner garden and dispose of it in plastic bags in the dustbin. Smoking - Please do not smoke in any part of the house or conservatory. (Obviously if you do smoke outside please dispose of any butts safely in the dustbin.)

Lusta cottage is comfortably furnished and has been specially designed to give all rooms a view over Lochbay and/or the Burn. It is designed to sleep 1-6 people easily. There is also a 3 seater double futon sofa bed in the lounge which can be converted into a double bed suitable for an additional 2 people.3 Bedrooms 3 Bath/Shower rooms. There is one double room with its own ensuite shower/toilet, one twin bedroom with family bathroom and a separate, externally accessed twin room with private shower/toilet, tea making facilities and satellite TV. The beds will be freshly made up for your arrival. Towels are not provided so please bring your own. Lounge & Conservatory. The lounge and attached conservatory offer a comfortable seating area including a Layzee Boy recliner, an old fashioned wooden rocking chair and a three seat futon sofa. Kitchen -There is a well-equipped kitchen including an electric cooker with extractor fan, microwave, fridge freezer and dishwasher. Most crockery, cutlery, wine glasses, mugs and kitchen utensils that you would expect to need are available. Fairy liquid, dishwasher tablets and kitchen cleaner are all supplied and will be found either by the sink or in the cupboard under the sink. The washing machine and tumble drier are housed in a small utility area by the back bedroom. Heating -The cottage is kept warm by electric storage heating and has radiators in each room that can be individually switched on or off. Each of the three bathrooms has fan heaters and extractor fans. The two larger bathrooms have heated towel rails operated by pulling the ceiling cord nearest the towel rail.The lounge also has an integrated electric fire and a fan heater is kept in the conservatory for occasional use. An immersion heater located in the main bathroom provides hot water and a 2-hour booster switch is found in the kitchen on the right hand side of the fridge. Phone - A coin payphone is provided for your use and is found in the lounge of the cottage. Alternatively a public phone box can be found approximately 100 metres from cottage. Most mobile signals are either very weak or non existent inside the cottage but stronger signals can be found at various points around the croft and curiously enough a particularly strong signal is usually found just outside the Stein Pub! BT WiFi/Internet is available. TV/DVD A small flat screen TV with an integrated/DVD player is provided in the lounge. The Sky satellite freeview box provides excellent reception for all of the usual channels, as well as access to more rubbish than you would ever wish to see! However please note that whilst there is a Sky Satellite dish to provide a booster signal, only freeview TV channels are provided (not Sky Pay TV) There is also a small flat screen TV in the back twin bedroom with a satellite Sky freeview box.There is a small collection of DVDs for your entertainment.

There is a bookshelf full of books for your perusal including a guidebook of walks around Skye. If you find yourself half way through a novel at the end of your stay please feel free to take it with you. On the same note we also welcome any additions to our mini library! Music A Bluetooth CD/Radio player is provided in the lounge together with a collection of CDs. Games -There is a small selection of children and adult board games stored in the hollow cube shaped table in the lounge. Power failure - In case of power failure a supply of tea lights is kept in the kitchen drawers for emergency use.

Ample parking is available with a garage that can provide shelter for motorcycles or pedal cycles if requested in advance.There is an inner gated garden of approximately quarter of an acre to enjoy. The 17 acres of privately owned croft land is also there to be enjoyed and can be accessed from gates on either side of the garden. Each access provides a unique way to enter and explore the croft. Either go through the righthand side gate looking out over Stein and down along the slope next to the neighbouring highland cattle, or through the lefthand gate, carefully accross the top of burn, past the ruins and down the farside, crossing the burn once again in the middle - over the top of the waterfall - or down the croft by the meandering burn ...your choice! Whichever you choose, whatever the weather, you will have an amazing experience which will vary every time you do it! If you are feeling bold you could even try clambering down under the waterfall and paddle in the pool! But please be careful - and supervise children near the steep sides of the gorge/waterfall.You can enter Lusta seashore from the gate at the far bottom right and side of the croft. The shore is rocky so take care.

Getting around

It is advisable to either bring your own car or rent a car to get around the Isle of Skye.. There is no bus or train service to Waternish. Buses do run from Portree to Dunvegan, and passengers will need to get off the bus at Fairy Bridge, at the entrance of the road to Waternish, but it is then a 3 mile walk to Lusta cottage. There is a taxi rank in Portree, but taxis are not a common form of transport on the island - they will be expensive and waiting times may be lengthy.

Interaction with guest

The cottage will be prepared and made ready for you from 5pm on the day of your arrival, by our housekeeper who lives locally. If the housekeeper is not at the house when you arrive, the front door will be unlocked - please make yourselves at home and enjoy your stay. Sadly we are not able to meet you in person, but you are welcome to call us on the contact number listed on the notice board in the kitchen if you have any questions or need us to resolve any problems. In the event of an emergency, our good friends over the road at Lorgill B&B will be happy to help.

“What a view!”

My husband and I brought my Mum back to visit Stein after Mum and I’s initial visit 29 years ago. The fact that we stayed at Lusta cottage provided us with the most spectacular views over Stein, the bay and out to the Herbridees brought tears to here eyes! It is the perfect location for a holiday home and the view from the sun room makes it hard to tear oneself away from the property in order to explore the island. The house is very well equipped, comfy and cosy with everything you need.lots of helpful info is provided. The only reason I didn’t 5 star the rating was because the ensuite is rather cramped and railings on the outdoor steps would be helpful for those less steady on their feet like my mum. But apart from these two minor issues it was PERFECT! Thank you so much.

We absolutely agree your comments about the ensuite was designed by the previous owners when it was run as a B&B is handy to have an ensuite, but we agree size wise it is small! “Lovely cottage in a great remote location with wonderful views”

Lusta Cottage is a great size for a family, or small group of friends to base their stay in Skye from. It also has the addition of a conservatory which provides great views over the bay. If you want a remote setting, then this is it, set in its own crofting land which runs down to the sea, yet it is within walking distance of the Stein Inn which is an amazing pub with good food and real ale. Although it provides that homely feeling when there's a storm raging outside, some aspects could do with a wee bit of repair/upgrading, but nothing that would affect your stay in any notable way.

We have decorators booked to address the areas that need some attention following the harsh winter. However this can only be done when the weather allows (!) which we hope will be in early June. We trust this will enhance our guests' enjoyment of the property.

Not the biggest of cottages I have stayed in on Skye but by far the best views. Which were magnificent. I even managed a photo of a sunset. Well equipped kitchen and good parking. Nice easy walk to Stein which has good food and Loch Bay restaurant for lunch was superb. Lots of walking and things to do in this area without visiting the very crowded tourist spots in other parts of the island. A relaxing week, wish Skye wasn't so far away

This is a great base for extended family holidays given the number of bathrooms and the self contained annexe at the rear of the property (great for grandparents needing a bit of peace and quiet). The views from the conservatory are stunning and ever changing - even in bad weather (yes, it does rain in Skye sometimes). The associated croft land (accessed by gates from the cottage) is a jewel; complete with it's own stream, ravine and waterfalls it leads down to a rocky beach with awesome views and widlife. Waternish is a hidden gem in Skye with lots of interesting local places to explore if one doesn't want to wander too far. However, it's also a great base fo exploration further afield in Skye. We'll be back!

“Best views ever”

This is the 3rd (or even 4th?) time we've been here and we absolutely love this place. It is well equipped, cosy and homely, and has the very best views across to the outer Hebrides from the conservatory. Ideal for families (and extended family members wanting a bit of privacy in the small annexe), walkers, and those that simply love a slower place of life, we couldn't recommend Lusta Cottage more. When you open the windows in the main bedroom, you hear the stream running and the sheep baa-ing (is that even a word?!) It's absolutely the best place to chill out and recharge your batteries. 100% recommend.

We all had a relaxing holiday at Lusta cottage. Only two full days of sunshine and one gorgeous sunset was enjoyed during the week but we were very thankful! Conservatory allows amazing views to be captured in good weather. Enclosed garden was absolutely brilliant for dogs and children to run free. Lusta is a good base to explore the northern part of Syke.

“The spot I looked for all my life”

'The spot I looked for all my life', said my dad for whom we organized this trip. And indeed, it is a magnificent place to stay. The horizon is different every night and can be observed not only from the garden bench, but also from the veranda to escape evening midgets. Waternish has all peace and quite you need, but nevertheless there is plenty of authentic activity to be enjoyed. Lusta cottage is cosy, but perfect for 3 couples, with 3 rooms and 3 bathrooms.

if you want a holiday with exceptional surroundings and wildlife on your doorstep this is for you. Thankyou Lusta cottage for being there !!! A lovely homely feel just what you want for relaxation and warm comfortable place to rest your head after hours of walking.I would say though dont bother with the Stein pub,they are very rude and unfriendly people !! sorry,buts thats how we found the place.Lusta croft was very beautiful and had sunsets to die for,we loved every minute of it and would love to return,we highly recommend this place,thankyou Craig and Sue.x

Five of us hired Lusta for one week in May. Only one of our party had visited the Isle of Skye previously. My brother and his wife had stayed in the village of Stein (just down the hill from Lusta) each year for the last 3 years and had fallen in love with the island. Lusta was cosy and warm from arrival until leaving a week later. The views from the conservatory over the loch are stunning, particularly in the evenings, regardless of weather. We purchased our food in the co-op in Portree as we passed through on our way to the cottage as we catered for ourselves throughout the week except on the 3 occasions we visited the Stein Inn (recommended) during the evenings for dinner. An evening walk up the hill directly across the road behind the cottage and through the gate (Scottish Water) was spectacular as it was a clear blue sky and the views from the top, breathtaking. We took the boat (Misty Isle) from Elgol to Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Cullins which was also spectacular and highly recommended, The hot choc and cups of tea taken on board boat before the return trip to Elgol was a lovely touch. The Ramblers Assoc'n book of walks which is in the cottage is very useful containing a wide variety of walks. On the last day we walked the inland cliffs of Scorr Horan and saw both Golden and White Tailed Eagles. A perfect end to a perfect week. Thank you Lusta!
