Location description from owner

The Costa del Sol region

Torremolinos is located 7km west of Málaga airport and was the first Costa del Sol resort to be developed back in the early sixties when it was little more than a sleepy village, still today the town reflects its heritage with several of the original fresh fish bars located right in the shopping centre, incongruously flanked by exclusive boutiques and gift shops. In general, however, the wave of tourists who descended on the town in the fifties and sixties changed the face of Torremolinos for ever.

Torremolinos has thankfully long outgrown its Monty Python spam and chips image and, over recent years, has evolved as an attractive and appealing resort noted for its clean sandy beaches, wide choice of hotels and restaurants and unparalleled variety of entertainment, activities and nightlife available.

Over the years, Torremolinos has evolved as an attractive and appealing resort, noted for its clean sandy beaches, wide choice of hotels and restaurants and unparalleled variety of entertainment, activities and nightlife available. At the height of summer, the resort has a great appeal for the younger set, with a reputation for its hectic nightlife. Out of season, however, it takes on a different character. Now practically a suburb of Málaga, the atmosphere is much more Spanish, especially at weekends, with an air of friendliness and welcome.

Torremolinos

Castillo de Santa Clara has an interesting history. The development stands on the rocky promontory known locally as la roca or the rock, which dominates the Torremolinos coastline separating La Carihuela from El Bajondillo. This is the site of one of the first hotels in the whole of the Costa del Sol.

At the turn of the 20th century a wealthy Englishman George Langworthy Southan and his wife Annie Margaret bought the old Torremolinos carabineers barracks called Castillo Santa Clara (Santa Clara Castle), originally built in 1763, as well as the surrounding lands. The Langworthys developed the estate into a luxurious summer property with plush gardens and viewing points on the edge of the rock, overlooking the sea.

Unfortunately Margaret died in 1913 at the age of only 40. Langworthy was overcome by grief and turned his attentions and considerable fortune to help the local people of Torremolinos during a time of extreme economic hardship. He became known as El Ingles de la Peseta, or the Englishman of the peseta, from his custom of paying local people a silver peseta for reading out a passage from the Bible or some other religious text. Locals would queue to read the passage – known locally as receiving their 'treatment' – in exchange for their silver peseta which at the time could feed a family for a day.

By 1930 Santa Clara had opened as a hotel, initially attracting many of Langworthy's acquaintances from his time in the military. One of the first notable guests that would stay at the hotel Santa Clara was Spain's Surrealist eccentric genius Salvador Dali and his then lover and eternal Muse, Gala, who stayed in Santa Clara for several weeks in May 1930. Gala would raise the eyebrows of the extremely conservative local women soaking up the Torremolinos sun top-less as Dali finished his painting El Hombre Invisible (The Invisible Man).

El Ingles de la Peseta would spend his remaining years in retirement living in a small house on the grounds of Santa Clara, overlooking La Carihuela until his death in April 1945, aged 79. According to local accounts, the whole of Torremolinos attended his funeral as a symbol of gratitude and love from a community which Langworthy had helped in more ways than one. He was buried in the English cemetery in Malaga next to his beloved Margaret.

The modern Castillo de Santa Clara opened as a hotel in 1975.

“Seconds away from the beach with excellent view”

Reviewed 3 Apr 2015

The studio is perfectly located on the "Punto" headland which means that both Torremolinos town and the Carihuela areas for shopping and restaurants are within easy reach and there's a handy private elevator up to street level. The studio itself is unfussy and comfortable with everything you need. We only used the kitchen for making coffee in the morning and a fruit salad breakfast - blissfull to enjoy them on the balcony before hitting the beach. The balcony itself was very sunny and had a lovely view, which is one of the reasons why we chose to stay here. The decor could do with being updated but the studio has everything you'd need. We didn't use the pool as we prefer to go to the beach, but it looked lovely and the gardens had lovely views of the sea and even the Sierra Nevada mountains. A handy tip would be to recommend the El Gato Lounge restaurant/bar which is almost directly downstairs on the beach. Great service, very good food and drinks selection.
