Description

Venitcinque is a traditionally restored village house with a stunning view looking east and on the other side of the valley can be seen the village of Montefegatesi.

On the top floor, the main bedroom has a double bed and the second bedroom has two single beds. The house is entered from the middle floor and there is a hall lounge and the toilet and shower rooms. In the former cantina (cellar) we have the dining room and fully equipped kitchen complete with dishwasher and marble worktop.

Outside there is a small terrace where you can enjoy the Tuscan sunshine until the mid afternoon, when the shade allows you to cool off a little towards the evening. There are chairs and a table for al fresco dining. Being situated at a height of over 500 metres above sea level, the village does cool off nicely in the summer evenings.

There is a new gas central heating system allowing the house to be used all year round and it would make an excellent base for those wishing

Parking is available in the village car park (no charge), this being about 3 minutes' walk from the house. It is, however, possible to get a small car almost up to the front door, but there are some very tight corners to negotiate.

Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

The Northwest corner of Tuscany contains not only its most perfect walled town (Lucca) and its second most popular tourist attraction (Pisa's leaning tower), but also some of its most spectacular mountain scenery (the Apuan Alps) and busiest beaches (the Versilian Riviera). It's also extremely accessible being an hour from Pisa Airport.

Lucca is one of the most graceful and best-preserved medieval cities in all of Italy, enclosed within 4km of imposing walls. Inside is a treasure trove of churches, palazzi, statues, towers and piazzas, from Romanesque to Renaissance. With its winding, almost traffic-free lanes, it retains a delightfully medieval atmosphere, and even the summer crowds are easily swallowed up.

Don't miss the graceful 13th century Cathedral of St Martin, with its 11th century campanile and Renaissance paintings inside. Stop for an ice cream at the Piazza Anfiteatro - not an amphitheatre at all, but an open, oval square on the site of the Roman amphitheatre, now lined by picture perfect medieval houses.

Pisa - whose leaning tower, incidentally, is just one of the medieval gems (including the Cathedral) making up the city's 'Field of Miracles'. Follow the crowds to the tower - whose tilt Galileo famously exploited to prove his theory of gravity by dropping balls of different mass from the top and showing that they all landed at the same time.

Tereglio

Situated on a ridge between two valleys, Tereglio is an historic village which was at one time a fortification and is on a formerly important border between two regions. It is reached from the Serchio valley which runs from Lucca northwards and then and one has to negotiate one of two rather narrow, winding routes up in to the hills. There are many beautiful places to visit both locally and further afield.

The great walled city of Lucca is a must - one of its plus points is the lack of traffic within the centre. Opera lovers will be able to visit various places where the composer Puccini lived and worked - there is a Puccini Festival near Viareggio each summer. The Orrido di Botri is a nature reserve almost on the doorstep of Tereglio and is one of many outdoor attractions of this area.

There is a village shop within paces of the house where you can stock up on essentials and there are two restaurants La Crepa and Da Michele both serving local cuisine at local, not tourist prices. There is also a general store a little further away.

For those who need to visit a hypermarket, there is a Leclerc at Gallicano where you can buy almost anything and it has the cheapest petrol and diesel in the area.

Swimming and spa facilities are available at Bagni di Lucca - see valdilima.com for more details.

“Breathtaking”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2012

Tereglio is such a gem, that I almost feel reluctant to tell other people about it. The accommodation was probably the best we have experienced both abroad and in the UK. The view was amazing even when there was a thunderstorm to see all the clouds gradually clearing up the valley.

“stunning scenery in quiet location”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2012

This is a delightful little house with stunning views across the valley and up to the mountains. The nearby villages are within easy safe road or wooded pathway walking and longer walks can be taken from the village itself or from close-by locations (the Orrido National Park) easily and quickly reached by car. Further afield but still no great distance are the larger communities of historical Barga, Castelnuovo and Castiglione and the Orrichiella National Park - we hope to get there on our next visit. But no car is needed to appreciate the views from the terrace and balcony, truly memorable aspects of our stay, plus the cats and their kittens round every street corner, the geckos on warm walls and the night time flights of the bats and fireflies. We also loved the (very large and modern) shower!

“Breathtaking views”

Could have stared at the view from the patio down the valley all day. Beautiful house, picture perfect village with shop and taverna, and acres of enchanting wooded mountains all to ourselves. Going in April we had the pleasure of sun on the terrace in the day and a cosy log fire at night. Everything we needed was there including a cookery book.
