The Scotland region

Portnahaven is situated on the southern tip of the Rhinns Peninsula on the Island of Islay. Islay is known as 'The Queen of the Hebrides' because of it's mild climate and fertile land. It usually has more hours of sunshine than the West Coast of Scotland, and the weather can change from sun to rain and back again very quickly. The island has many stunning beaches, particularly on the Atlantic Coast. Historically, it was the seat of the Lord of the Isles, and you can visit the remains of their stronghold on the Finlaggan Island. There is a small museum in Port Charlotte.Islay is popular for family holidays and also swimming, surfing, sea fishing, river fishing, diving, pony trecking, bird watching and cycling. It is world famous for its eight whisky distilleries - Bowmore, Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Kilchoman. and it also has a micro brewery. There is an annual whisky festival, jazz festival and beach rugby tournament.
