The Canary Islands region

Beach Guide to Playa Blanca

If you are staying in one of our Lanzarote holiday villas then you will probably want to explore the local beaches in the resort – and maybe even venture furher afield too. Lanzarote is home to nearly 100 great beaches – and most of them are made of golden sand rather than the black grains common on other Canary Islands.

Playa Blanca – White Beach

The small beach which the entire resort is named after is located right in the heart of the Resort, close to Calle Limones and remains a firm favourite with both locals and tourists alike. Whilst not as large as Playa Flamingo or Playa Dorada it´s still a great space to soak up the sun or enjoy safe bathing in the sea. And there are loads of restaurants to select from here as well as plenty of shops when you need a bite to eat or a cool drink.

Playa Flamingo

Located to the east of the harbour area Playa Flamingo has only recently been restored to its former glory after suffering at the hands of Tropical Storm Delta back in 2005. This is the best beach for families with young children as massive stone breakwaters protect the bay here from waves and the beach shelves gently into the ocean. There are also plenty of facilities on hand such as sun loungers and shades and the beach is fringed by some delightful tropical palms and plants.

Playa Dorada

The biggest and most popular beach in the resort, Playa Dorada is located just in front of the Princessa Yaiza hotel. There´s plenty of space here to find your own place in the sun and much like Playa Flamingo plenty of facilities on hand too such as sun loungers and shades. There are also a number of bars located right on the beach that are just ideal for a lunchtime snack along with plenty of restaurants on the main promenade.

Playas de Papagayo

Viewed as one of the most beautiful beaches on Lanzarote, if not the Canaries, the Playas de Papagayo are a real must for beach lovers. As there are in fact no less than six individual sandy coves and bays to explore here. All boasting breathtaking views back to the resort some fifteen minutes walk away as well as across to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. There are a couple of rather over priced bars and restaurants here so it can pay to take your own food and drink. Shade is also thin on the ground. But if you´re looking for totally unspoiled and all natural experience Papgayo is hard to beat.

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca (meaning "White Beach") is the most southerly resort on the island of Lanzarote, which is itself situated just 80 miles off the coast of Africa. Surrounded by numerous golden beaches and azure seas, and enjoying almost year round sunshine with temperatures averaging 21°C (72°F), this really is the place to enjoy a family holiday or a sunshine getaway for couples.

Marina Rubicon

Being a relatively new tourist destination, the resort has been able to develop based upon the best ideas of others. For example, whilst there are places to eat, drink and dance until the early hours, there are no mega-nightclubs with hundreds of people pouring on to the streets at closing time; there are plenty of these 25 miles away in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Developers have also chosen to build the luxurious Marina Rubicon here, surrounded by its designer boutiques and eateries overlooking the yachts, it definitely brings an upmarket feel to the resort.

Playa Blanca town

The main shopping area is in the centre of town and is one third pedestrianised. Here you will find shopping outlets for a wide range of clothes, electrical goods, alcohol and cigarettes. On a practical note, you will also find many cashpoints, supermarkets, a chemist and a lots of places to eat. Not forgetting that our office is also situated here!

Playa Blanca promenade

Running parallel to the high street, just one block away is the sea-front boardwalk. The boardwalk in Playa Blanca runs the full length of the resort (5 miles) and passes numerous beaches, Marina Rubicon, the harbour and too many restaurants to mention. This is an ideal place for walking/jogging, is wheelchair friendly, and for the most part is populated by restaurants and cafes, plus a few shops. The sea views here are beautiful during the day, but an evening meal is a must to fully appreciate the views of the orange sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.

Papagayo beaches

For those of you who are quite happy to remain in the resort, you'll be glad to know that car hire is no longer a necessity in any of our villas. There is now a bus service that runs back and forth across the resort and a our villa is a short walk away from any of the bus stops. The service only costs 1.37€ per trip and runs every half-hour from 6:30am to 10pm (7 days a week).

Whilst there is lots to do in Playa Blanca, sightseers and shoppers should get out of the resort to discover what delights Lanzarote has to offer. There is a regular bus service that travels between Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen (the Biosfera shopping centre) and Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote; plus a large shopping centre enroute called Deiland. This really will give you every opportunity to shop 'til you drop for everything and anything, at prices more often cheaper than the UK. Please note that most of the shops in Arrecife close between the hours of 2pm and 4.30pm every day. If you have a hire car then allow 25 mins to Puerto del Carmen and a further 10 minutes to get to Arrecife.

If you want to travel around the Island you can arrange excursions, car hire or a private driver . There really are the most amazing places to see here, from the green lagoons of El Golfo to the martian landscapes of the Timanfaya National Park. The countryside still bears the scars of the volcanic eruptions that started in 1730 and lasted for more than 2000 days!

Travelling up the eastern coast are the fishing villages of Punta Mujeres, Arrieta and Orzola plus the attractions of Jameos del Agua and La Cueva de Los Verdes. These are amazing structures formed from the cooling lava flows to create caves and tunnels. Heading north over the mountains there is the Mirador del Rio, the highest point on Lanzarote with a viewing platform from which to enjoy stunning views to the neighbouring island of La Graciosa. A short drive from here down through Haria, known as the Valley of a Thousand Palms, on to the village San Bartolome. It is here that you will find the Cesar Manrique Foundation, a tribute to the late local artist who influenced much of the architecture and strict building controls on the Island.

“Wonderful holiday in a beautiful villa”

Reviewed 5 Jan 2016

it is a really beautifully decorated house and it is in a excellent location. It would be nicer and more helpful if there are some hooks or somewhere for placing the towels in the downstairs bathroom.

thank you. I am glad that you enjoyed the holiday in our villa. We have installed towels hangers in each bathroom. Thank you for your suggestion. Have a wonderful 2016.
