Villa Kalithea is one of a group of three detached villas, each set in its own garden and boasting its own private pool, and affording a good degree of privacy from each other. The villa stand on the edge of the traditional village of Pendamodi, just 15 km from Crete's island capital Heraklion and the nearest beach resorts, yet far removed in atmosphere from the busy holiday hot-spots.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms (one double and one with twin beds), a bathroom and a shaded corner balcony.
Both the bedrooms and the lounge are airconditioned, and the lounge is equipped with satellite TV (limited English-language channels), DVD and CD players. A washing machine is also provided.

The Heraklion Prefecture region
By far the largest of the Greek islands, Crete is almost a country in its own right, and as such offers more scope for exploring than could be exhausted in any single holiday. Villa Kalithea's location close to the island's geographical centre means that, in spite of its wonderfully tranquil setting, it is extremely well placed for seeing as much of the island as you fancy.
The most important attractions - the world-famous Minoan Palace of Knossos and Heraklion's Archaeological Museum - are just the shortest of drives away. Heading further east, you can explore the stunning Lassithi plateau with its distinctive windmills, the tiny isle of Spinalonga in the scenic Gulf of Mirabello, and numerous other Minoan sites including Gournia and Kato Zakros. To the west lie the majestic White Mountains and the atmospheric Venetian harbour towns of Rethymnon and Chania, whilst on the south coast you can visit the beachside caves of Matala and the splendid monastery at Preveli. And dotted all over the island you may stumble upon charming hill villages and picturesque fishing harbours.
The 18-hole championship course of the Crete Golf Club is just over half-an-hour's drive away near Hersonissos, whilst the water park Water City is closer still and provides a fun day out for all the family.
Those who prefer swimming in the sea can easily reach a variety of beaches by car; the nearest, at Amoudara, is just 15km away. The beaches along the north coast offer a full range of resort facilities including a selection of water sports and family entertainment. On the other side of the mountains, the south coast boasts many lesser-known and undeveloped beaches, as well as low-key resorts such as Matala with its distinctive beachside caves.
Pendamodi is a traditional rural village set in bucolic surroundings with spectacular mountain views. Nestling in the foothills of Crete's central mountain range, the village lies only 15km south of Heraklion, but its sleepy atmosphere could not be further from the hustle and bustle of the busy island capital.
The surrounding landscape is reminiscent of Tuscany, with ancient olive groves and extensive vineyards covering gently rolling hills as far as the eye can see. Life in the local villages retains a slow, dignified pace and tourism is by no means the main focus - although those visitors who do venture here are warmly welcomed.
Pendamodi's main focal point is the traditional village kafenion, just a short stroll from the villas. Offering a selection of simple dishes for those occasions when you neither feel like cooking, nor driving, it also provides an opportunity to socialise with the locals. The village also boasts two mini-markets for basic provisions, and the nearest taverna is approximately 10 minutes' walk away. A wider selection of shops and eating places can be found a short drive away in the neighbouring villages.

"A wonderful week away."
I stayed at the villa with my two young sons and found it to be clean and well equipped for a week of mainly self-catering. Jocelyne was a highlight of our holiday, unobtrusive, but helpful to the point of accompanying us to the emergency room in Heraklion. Pentamodi is a good base for seeing the sights of Heraklion without having to stay in the city itself, with beaches on the north and south coast an easy day trip.
